Compassion for the Poor

As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Gal. 6:10

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a foult, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Gal. 6:1

Freedom from Slander

Esteem for the Ministry

We beseech you to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. 1 Thess. 5:12, 13

Prayer for the Ministry

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit; -- and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel. Eph. 6:18, 19

With heavenly power, O Lord, defend

Thy faithful messengers secure,
And make them to the end endure.

Unbelief Should Be Guarded Against

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. Heb. 3:12

Caution Against Apostasy

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled. Heb. 12:15

What bright exchange, what treasure shall be given,
For the lost birthright of a hope in heaven?
If lost the gem which empires could not buy,
What yet remains? -- a dark eternity.

Believers Are the Salt of the Earth

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Matt. 5:13

Strive thou with studious care to find
Some good thy hands may do;
Some way to serve and bless mankind,
Console the heart, relieve the mind,
And open comforts new.

The Universal Rule of Equity

All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Matt. 7:12

Blessed Redeemer, how divine,
How righteous is this rule of thine,
To do to all men just the same
As we expect or wish from them.

How bless'd would every nation prove
Thus ruled by equity and love!
All would be friends without a foe,
And form a paradise below.

To Glorify God by Holy Conduct

I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles. 1 Pet. 2:11

A profession free from stain;

Following Christ, and fearing thee.

Abounding in the Work of the Lord

My beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Cor. 15:58

Sow in the morn thy seed,

To doubt and fear give thou no heed,
Broad-cast it round thy land.

Decision of Character

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matt. 6:24

Not a broken, brief obedience
Does the Lord of heaven demand;
He requires our whole allegiance,
Words and deeds, and heart and hand:
God will hold divided sway
With no diety of clay.

Holy Example

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matt. 5:16

The holy gospel we profess;
So let our works and virtues shine
To prove the doctrine all divine.

Love to Our Neighbor

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well. James 2:8

Love lays its own advantage by
To seek its neighbour's good;
So God's own Son came down to die,
And bought our lives with blood.

Love is the grace that keeps its power
In all the realms above;
There faith and hope are known no more
But saints for ever love.
