Spiritual Diligence

This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Phil. 3:13, 14

A scrip on my back, and a staff in my hand,

Entire Consecration

Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Rom. 6:13

Renounce all strength, but strength divine,

Should I to gain the world's applause,
Or to escape its harmless frown,
Refuse to countenance thy cause,
And make thy people's lot my own,
What shame would fill me in that day,
When thou thy glory shalt display!

Evil Appearances to Be Avoided

Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1 Thess. 5:22

Our Saviour by a heavenly birth
Calls us to holiness on earth,
Bids us our former follies hate,
And from the wicked separate.

We must have holy hearts and hands,
And feet that go where he commands;
A holy will to keep his ways,
And holy lips to speak his praise.

Diligence in Keeping the Heart

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Prov. 4:23

Thy business be to keep thy heart,
Each passion to control;
Nobly ambitious well to rule
The empire of thy soul.

Search the Scriptures

Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39

Lord, thy teaching grace impart,
That we may not read in vain;
Write thy precepts on our heart,

Secret Prayer

Thanksgiving

Meditation

In Prosperity to Be Humble

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think. Rom. 12:3

Lord, if thou thy grace impart,
Poor in spirit, meek in heart,
I shall, as my Saviour, be
Rooted in humility:
Pleas'd with all the Lord provides,
Wean'd from all the world besides.

In Adversity to Trust God

Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. Isa. 1:10

If Providence our comforts shroud,
And dark distresses lower,
Hope paints its rainbow on the cloud,
And grace shines through the shower.

Self-Government

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Prov. 16:32

Happy the man, whose cautious steps
Still keep the golden mean;
Whose life, by Scriputre rules well form'd,
Declares a conscience clean.

Self-Denial

Lord, ever let me freely yield
What most I prize to thee,
Who never hast a good withheld,
Or wilt withhold from me.

Thou art engaged to grant;

Contentment

Be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Heb. 13:5

Since he has said "I'll ne'er depart,"
I'll bind his promise to my heart,
Rejoicing in his care:
This shall support while here I live,
And, when in glory I arrive,
Will praise him for it there.
