Love of the Truth

We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. 1 John 4:6

Perseverance in the Truth

Love to the Scriptures

Here mines of knowledge, love, and joy,
Are open'd to our sight,
The purest gold without alloy,
And gems divinely bright.

Love to Enemies

Love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Luke 6:3

Lord, shall thy bright example shine

To love my enemies.

Love to the Brethren

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 1 John 4:7

Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.

The Witness of Conscience

Hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 1 John 3:19, 21

How happy are the new-born race,
Partakers of adopting grace!

Hid from the world and all its eyes,
Within their hearts the blessing lies,
And conscience feels it there.

God the Believer's Sun and Shield

The Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Ps. 84:11

If thou art my shield and my sun,
The night is no darkness to me;

They bring me but nearer to thee.

God the Portion of the Believer

God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. Ps. 73:26

His boundless grace shall all my need supply,
When streams of creature-comfort cease to flow:
And should he some inferior good deny,
'Tis but a greater blessing to bestow.

God the Refuge of the Believer

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. Psa. 46:1,2

God is our refuge in distress,
A present help when dangers press;
In him undaunted I'll confide,
Though earth were from her centre toss'd,
And mountains in the ocean lost,
Torn piece-meal by the roaring tide.

God the Guide of the Believer

This God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death. Ps. 48:14

Haste thee on from grace to glory,
Arm'd by faith, and wing'd by prayer;
Heaven's eternal day's before thee,
God's own hand shall guide thee there.

Pardon Through Christ

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sin. Col. 1:14

O Lamb of God, thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,
Till all the ransom'd church of God
Is saved, to sin no more.

Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.

Justification Through Christ

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Rom. 3:24

No righteousness but his we own,
No ransom but his blood alone:
While on the Father's name we call,
Our faith pleads Christ as all in all.
