Democrats successful in squashing parental rights
A bill that would have required parental notification before a minor could seek an abortion died in the Senate this week when Majority Leader Bill Frist could not muster enough votes for cloture. Fifty-one Republicans and only six Democrats voted to bring the Child Custody Protection Act to the floor, with the vast majority of Democrats signaling that they have no interest in protecting parents’ rights to know that their teenage daughters are getting an abortion. The bill, which had passed the House, would also have made it a crime to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion in order to circumvent parental-notification laws in the minor’s home state.
