Pastor Roger, it just happens that I am currently in a state of caeer crisis and health problems. I graduated in 2004 with a degree and have been searching for a stable job for the past almost 3 years but sometimes due to my own mistakes and other times due to other circumstances such as my medical conditions  (I suffer from epilepsy and sleeping problems) my employers have all asked my to leave. I confess that I have really strived hard to improve myself and yet I have made no progress unlike my friends who are now advancing in the fields of their career. I can't help but envy those around me whose lives are progressing on so smoothly be it my friend or my family members. Thus this envy turns to hatred and I vented my anger out on my dad and sister on thursday night. It was only through cooling down this morning and having a talk with my mum and dad that I realised how much my actions had aggravated the strained relationship between my parents as it happned that my mum was working when the matter occured that night. Now my mum is considering resigning from her job partially due to my wilfulness. She says that this way at least she will be able to fulfuil the responsibilities  of a mother when crises arise. However I do not want her to make such a huge sacrifice for me. Afterall, it won't do matters any good.

I will gladly add you to my prayer list in these things as well as your family. It is hard sometimes to handle such things, especially when physical health complicates matters. We must remember to trust in the Lord, to give these problems over to Him.

Hello xiangothers,

WELCOME!

I sincerely hope that you enjoy Christians Unite, and you will be in my prayers.

Sooner or later, we all have trials to go through and health problems to deal with. As Christians, things are different for us because with have GOD with us and in us. It's many times up to us about how much GOD helps us in our daily lives. By that, I mean how often do we pray, how often do we study GOD'S WORD, and how often to we yield to GOD'S Perfect Will in our lives.

As a Christian, the most important thing for us to do is to be seen in and through JESUS CHRIST. GOD doesn't hate certain people, but HE does hate sin. If you belong to JESUS CHRIST, your sins have already been paid for and it's a daily matter of trying to live for HIM. That should involve prayer and asking GOD to help you deal with the people who love you the most - GOD and your family. You have a relationship with GOD, and that's the most important relationship in this short life. A good relationship with GOD can have a positive impact on your entire life and everyone around you. You've already said that you feel guilty about several things. From the description that you've given about your family, it sounds like they will forgive you. Pray about these things and ask GOD to help you.

If you are a Christian, put the thought that GOD hates you out of your mind and forget the story of Esau. It does hurt GOD when you sin, but it doesn't make GOD hate you. Pray about everything that bothers you or makes you feel guilty. We already know that GOD will forgive us, and I think that your family will also. GOD LOVES YOU!

Love In Christ,
Tom

Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable GIFT, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour Forever!

"High Cost"

Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows. . . Isaiah 53:4a (NIV)

Some time ago, I had a very good friend enter the hospital to undergo some major surgery.

I'm pleased to say that he's doing pretty well.

Physically, he's fine, but mentally, he's still in shock from getting the bill for a two-week hospital stay. Don’t get me wrong; he is thankful for the miracles of modern medicine; he is grateful for the skilled hands of the surgeons, and he is appreciative of the care given him by the great nurses.

Even so, the sticker price on health care can be quite a shock.

Having said that, I'd like you to think of two things today.

First, if the Lord has blessed you with health, have you spent any time giving thanks to Him for your well-being? My friend is a good example of how quickly a person can lose the gift of a good constitution.

My second thought is just as basic. Have you ever thought how much it cost our Lord to make your soul healthy and well? The bill from a two-week hospital stay is pretty cheap when it's compared to the life of God's Son. Jesus’ life, suffering, and death were the price that was paid on your bill, so your soul could be free from the corrupting cancer of sin.

Jesus lived, died, and rose so your soul might be healthy for eternity. He paid a great price for you, so He might give a great gift to you.

Having shared those thoughts, I'd like to say, by God’s grace be healthy–in body and soul.

"Finding Grace"

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

My father was a blacksmith. Maybe that’s why, when I hear the name “Erie, Pennsylvania” my mind conjures up images of strong men with blackened faces straining away in the steel mills, pouring fiery streams of molten iron out of red-hot cauldrons.

Unfortunately, Erie’s steel mills have mostly shut down, as have many factories, which once produced plastics, paper, and furniture. That’s why Erie has fallen on hard times and has a poverty rate twice the national average.

There are wonderful people in Erie, Pennsylvania, but you can forgive them if they sometimes wondered what it would take to get HOPE to turn off the Interstate Highway 90 and spend a little time in their town.

According to an Associated Press article that ran last week, the folks of Erie don’t have to wonder any longer. HOPE has not only gotten off the highway, it has decided to take up residency in that community of 102,000. This seems to be the common consensus after Mike Batchelor, president of the Erie Community Foundation, announced that an anonymous donor had given $100 million dollars to 46 charities in that town.

And what was the reaction to this great gift? There were glad tears, big smiles, and a person who said, “What a godsend. . . .”

As I read that story, I thought, that’s the kind of reaction the Lord would appreciate from each of us. Our heavenly Father, looking upon our hopeless condition decided to give us an unexpected, unearned Gift. No, not $100 million dollars –but the life of His Son.

So we might be rescued from damning sin and spiritual poverty, Jesus was born into this world. His life, His suffering, death, and resurrection are God’s gift to us. Through Jesus, items like forgiveness of sins and eternal life are no longer beyond our grasp. They have been placed into our hands. In Jesus, we are given hope of heaven and present security, which lasts past this world and into the next.

Grace: That’s a concept the people of Erie, Pennsylvania, understand better today than they did a month ago. Grace: God’s undeserved, unearned gift of salvation is a concept we should appreciate as well. In Jesus we ought to respond with glad tears, big smiles, and hearts, which most sincerely say, “What a godsend!”

"Eternal Seeds"

Love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God. 1 Peter 1:22-23

When archaeologists were excavating King Herod’s Dead Sea fortress of Masada, they found some 2,000-year-old seeds –seeds that had been taken from a date palm. With some work and tender loving care, those millennia-old seeds sprouted and grew into what has appropriately been named, “the Methuselah palm”.

Now, according to an article published by the BBC, the Global Crop Diversity Trust is going to try to make the preservation of all seeds a priority. According to the news release, a seed vault has been constructed inside a mountain on remote, and very cold Spitsbergen, Norway.
The idea is to take seeds and keep them safe for centuries to come.

And if you were to ask the Global Crop Diversity Trust, “Why do you want to keep seeds safe for a very long time?” They would quickly respond, “We want to be ready in case some global disaster befalls the world’s food crops. We want to be prepared to rebuild the food supply if something like nuclear war, asteroids, or global warming wipes things out.”

It’s probably a good idea. You just never know what’s going to happen.

Now, from here this devotion could go a number of different ways. We could talk about how God preserves us and keeps us safe from calamity or we could speak about the coming day when, no matter how remotely those seeds are being stored, they won’t be able to escape the coming judgment. Yes, this devotion could go any number of directions, but what I’d like to do is talk for a moment on how God’s Word grows.

In one of Jesus’ parables He spoke of how the seed of God’s Word develops differently on diverse soils. As far as I know, He never said anything about how long it takes before a sown seed will sprout. Long or short, it always seems like forever before any results can be seen.

Knowing that, we need to ask the Lord for patience. Many of you Daily Devotion listeners or readers are concerned about someone you love who doesn’t know Jesus as his or her Lord and Savior. You’re worried about their eternal destinies, and whether the seed will ever sprout within the soil of their hearts. For years, maybe decades, you have prayed and waited, waited and prayed. To all of you I would like to say: Be patient. The Lord, who has the ability to make the seed of a palm tree grow after 2,000 years, can bless the seed of His Word. As Peter said, ‘God’s Word is an imperishable seed. . . a seed which can bring new birth.’

"Still No Room"

November 28, 2007

She gave birth to her firstborn Son and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:7

The Gideons have always been welcome in my church.

The reason I always allowed the Gideons to make a presentation is because they do a job that needs to be done: They place Bibles in hotel rooms all around the world. I don’t know how many Scriptures they’ve distributed, but it’s a lot. Just as importantly, I’ve known men and women who, having come across God’s Word in the drawer of their hotel room’s night stand, have been touched by God’s salvation story.

This is why this devotion is just a little bit sad for me.

You see, it seems that some of the more modern and progressive hotel owners don’t want Bibles in their rooms. They offer a number of reasons for this decision. Some say they’ve had inquiries from guests who want other religious books distributed; some chains feel the Bible doesn’t meet the needs of the modern man. Others maintain that the Holy Scripture doesn’t fit the image they’re presenting to the public.

Maybe.

Of course, I wonder what would be the response of these hotel chains if a number of Christians complained about the dirty movies that are available for rent or lodged a protest about the violent games that can be played by children. Do you think they would be responsive to us and yank these money-making offerings? Yeah, I doubt it, too.

My friends, the bottom line is this: Today, just like it was 2,000 years ago, there is no room in the inn for the Savior. Humanity still doesn’t want the Christ and will try to keep their doors shut to His coming.

Now, you will note that I have not given you a list of those hotels. That was deliberately done. I’m also not going to call for any kind of boycott of those chains.

But I would like to suggest something to the readers of the Daily Devotion. Next time you stay in a hotel that has a Bible, when you check out, make sure you say a word, or write a note to the manager. Express your appreciation for the opportunity to read the Bible in your room. Let him know there was room for the Savior in the room you just rented.

Amen Pastor Roger!

Brother, I had to quote this entire post. I hope and pray that everyone reads it. WHY? The Holy Bible is the most powerful and important Book in the world for EVERY human being - lost or Saved.  WHY?:

1 - It is GOD'S WORD written to us, and GOD is our CREATOR! The Holy Bible is beyond amazing because it proves the existence of GOD, and it proves the absolute TRUTH of its contents from cover to cover. It stands alone as HARD EVIDENCE that the contents ARE GOD'S WORD!

2 - Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the WORD OF GOD. The Holy Bible tells us why we need to be Saved and how to become Saved. Again, it is GOD'S WORD, a message to us from our CREATOR. It contains the most important instructions human beings need, and the message is TIMELESS! In fact, GOD has Promised that HIS WORD will endure forever, and it most certainly will!

3 - GOD has Promised that HIS WORD will NEVER return void. In other words, GOD'S WORD will always achieve GOD'S Purpose. This beautiful TRUTH applies to all of mankind, most certainly including Christians. NOTHING from GOD'S WORD is ever wasted, so no other book can be compared to it.

4 - Finally, giving an offering to the Gideons for the purchase and distribution of Bibles is a gift of love for GOD and mankind. The Gideons pay their own expenses, and the offerings do buy Bibles. We already have the Promise of GOD that HE will use HIS WORD for HIS Purposes. A Promise from GOD is always kept perfectly, so this alone should be enough for us. We will never know how many people are helped in countless ways from a single Bible, but we should already know that single Bible will have a dramatic IMPACT! GOD'S WORD changes lives, and those impacted lives will effect the lives of those around them. So, withholding GOD'S WORD from any man or woman is a very cruel thing to do.

Love In Christ,
Tom

"Saving Us From Our Sins"

She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21

Michael Rodriguez wants to die.

Seven years ago, on December 13th, Michael along with six other inmates from a south Texas prison overpowered some workers, stole their clothes, grabbed some guns, and escaped in a stolen truck. A week-and-a-half later, on Christmas Eve, policeman Aubrey Hawkins caught them robbing a sporting goods store in Dallas. They shot him eleven times. Aubrey died immediately; his murderers were captured a month later.

Today, Michael Rodriguez, having declined to make any more appeals, wishes to die.

There is much in Michael’s story that is bothersome, worrisome, disturbing. What troubles me most is the reason why Michael wants to die. According to the Associated Press, at his competency hearing Michael told a psychologist he “had to accept his death sentence and submit to it as payment in order to be forgiven and obtain salvation.”

That’s tragic. How I pray that Michael may understand that while the state may decree he will die because of past crimes, he is not dying, he cannot die to earn forgiveness or salvation. Michael can’t pay that debt because the price has already been paid. That’s what the angel of the Lord told Joseph in a dream before the Savior was born: “you shall call His Name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”

So that Michael might be saved, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. So Michael might be forgiven, the Christ carried every transgression that Michael, you, I, and the rest of humanity have committed.

In truth, the day will come when Michael Rodriguez, like the rest of humanity, will breathe his last and leave this world. Michael may die by a lethal injection administered in sterile surroundings at the hands of a court-appointed executioner; he may die when a prisoner does him in while he is exercising in a prison courtyard, or death might come in a million other ways.

When death does arrive, I pray Michael may know God’s truth, which says, “By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:Cool. This devotion wants you to know that no matter what you have done wrong, Christ can forgive and make you right.

"Sincere Belief"

Everything is possible for him who believes. Mark 9:23b

People might believe in any number of things: superstitions, horoscopes, fables, and even different gods. But there is only one belief worth having. It is that faith that relies on Jesus Christ. This also includes submitting to God’s guidance and respecting His laws.

Many people think if they accept God’s existence, they are believers. They try to avoid God’s law or say it is not necessary to fully keep it. People create and keep their own laws. But the man whose belief is sincere has no doubts about any of God’s laws; he knows God created them for his benefit.

As human beings, we will never be perfect, but as we pray and learn God’s Word we can grow in that Word and mature in our faith. We will always make mistakes because we are sinful by nature, but we believe God will forgive our sins because of Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection.

Our Lord helps us with our problems as we carry our load. You might have heard the saying, “God helps those who help themselves.” But it might better be said that God helps those who realize they cannot do it by themselves.

"Christmas Rush"

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Romans 3:23-24

All of our United States and Canadian readers and listeners know that the festival of Thanksgiving is over, and the hectic days of Christmas shopping have begun. The TV commercials have stepped things up a notch, the magazines are filled with advertisements, and familiar stores have taken on the appearance of a winter wonderland as they put on display a host of Christmas' elves, decorations, Santas, music, and lights.

These changes have not escaped our children, most of whom are anxiously waiting in line to visit Santa. Recently, a store Santa told me about one young boy who came to him and demanded, "Santa Claus, I want one of everything you've got." That request was only topped by another youngster who said last year, "I want a rifle, a pistol, a machine gun, a hand grenade, dynamite, and tear gas. I’m planning a big surprise for my big brother."

I'm not sure what kind of Christmas that big brother had last year. I hope it wasn't as bad as it sounded.

I do know that Christmas can be an intimidating, exhausting “bad time” for a lot of people who feel it their sacred duty to attack the days after Thanksgiving as hard as they can. They end up getting so worn out trying to get the right thing for the right person that they never have time to think about God's great Gift of grace, Jesus. This is why this devotion has a not-so-hidden warning: Before things get absolutely crazy, let’s remind ourselves to keep things in perspective.

Let’s focus not so much on our gifts to each other as much as God’s wonderful Gift to us. The manger, the cross, the empty tomb, that’s where we can find God’s perfect gifts to His blood-bought people. That’s where this season will find its truest meaning.

"One of Us"

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

To his dying day, my father, who had served in World War II, could give his name, rank, and serial number.

Most of us, even those who aren’t Veterans, can do the same. We have a Social Security number, a credit card number, a telephone number, an address number, and a store account number. It goes on and on and on and on.

Depressing, isn’t it?

It’s depressing to call your bank, or a government office and find out your hopes, dreams, disappointments, and accomplishments have been reduced to a few numbers. It’s a rare person who doesn’t ask himself, “Does anyone care about me as an individual?”

There is an answer to that question. There are some people who really do care. Recently, I read a story about a 16th-century Belgian monarch who worried his friends at court by donning a disguise and disappearing for the purpose of walking among his people. His supporters asked him to avoid pulling that stunt again. “After all,” they said, “your life is at stake.”

The king's reply was memorable. He said, “I cannot rule my people unless I know how they live.”

I wish more people in power would go out and see how their people live. Think about it. If your boss knew what you go through, it might make for a better working relationship. If political leaders know the needs of their people, we might see less injustice.

Of course, that’s not likely to happen. Is it?

This is why the fact that God sent His Son to know our pains and problems, hurts and horrors is a most remarkable event in history. Not only did Jesus come to experience those things first hand, He came to give His life as an offering to make things right.

This is why as we approach Christmas, God’s people ought to be filled with thanksgiving for a Savior who said, “I cannot save my people unless I walk among them.”

"God said, ‘To All!’"

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:14 (KJV)

We are in Advent, that season of the church year when we take a special look at our lives, repenting of all we have done wrong, of all which brought Jesus into this world to live, suffer and die.

If memory serves correctly, it is also the time of year when churches and schools begin to get geared up for the children’s Christmas service. Although I can’t find it in Scripture, I believe there is a special spot in heaven reserved for teachers and volunteers who help other people’s children memorize the beautiful words and songs of the Nativity story. Even now I can recall the frustration of our teachers during practice and their beaming faces during the presentation.

Maybe you too can remember the beautiful and familiar words of the angels, which, way back when, we memorized from the King James Version of the Bible. Trying to sound like a heavenly host we shouted, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” The world likes that version –peace on earth, good will toward men. It’s so inclusive. It’s so hopeful.

And it’s so elusive.

That’s right: peace and good will are pretty elusive qualities. Last year, according to FBI statistics, hate crimes in the United States rose a total of 8%. They went up a lot more if you happened to be an individual who stood out from the common. Crimes against homosexuals rose 18%, attacks against Muslims increased 22%, and hostile acts against Catholics went up a full one-third. That’s not the worst of the statistics: Attacks against people with mental disabilities skyrocketed 94%.

Now, we’ve all been told that people are getting better, smarter, more understanding. We’re constantly being convinced that humanity is managing to pull itself up from the brutes we once were. Maybe, but the statistics don’t seem to bear that out.

Peace on earth, good will toward men sounds good on paper, but it’s pretty hard for humanity to come up with a design that really works successfully. Because we are failures at peace and good will, we need to hear the first part of what the angels said the night they appeared to some Bethlehem shepherds. You know the words: “Unto you is born a Savior, Christ the Lord.”

Only in the Savior can we be given God’s forgiveness of past transgressions; only in the Savior is there peace; only in Him do we receive God’s good will.
