"Do It Yourself"
July 16, 2007
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! Psalm 71:2
No question about it, people are creative. Creative people have brought us microwave ovens, the quarter-pounder-with-cheese, and the disposable razor blade. As of last week, there is a new product that comes to us from the mind of Anita Rachel Thomas, a most creative lady. The product is a Do-It-Yourself-Break-Out-Of-Jail kit. The kit consists of baby powder, cocoa butter, and lots of socks.
According to a report by CNN, Anita received mixed reviews to the field test of her product in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Wishing to escape from a local jail, Anita put on six pairs of socks, which enabled her to wiggle out of her leg irons. Then, she used the cocoa butter to grease up her arms and slide off her handcuffs. The final part of Rachels product was the baby powder that she threw into the face of the guard who was transporting her to court. Freed from cuffs, shackles, and the police, Anita made a mad dash for freedom.
Apparently, Anitas creative mind wasnt creative enough. She only went about two feet before the guard recaptured her.
There is no telling when Anitas do-it-yourself-jail-break kit is going to be offered to the general public. In the foreseeable future, Anitas creative mind will be dedicated to dealing with the new charges which have been filed against her: battery against a police officer and attempting to escape.
While it is true that some creative folks do manage to escape punishment, it is equally true that no one can escape punishment for their sins. The Psalmist was right when he said to God, In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline Your ear to me and save me. He knew that only God can free us from the shackles of sin and the horrors of hell.
The Heavenly Father sent His Son into this world so that we might be free from our punishment. Jesus offered Himself as our substitute, so that we might be released from condemnation. As Isaiah wrote, He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed. (53:5)
From the Lords creative mind and His gracious heart, we are forgiven and free.

If you are talking about the quote area it is because it only places what is in the text area into the quote. If I were to place a picture in the text area then it would also be placed in the quote.

"Needing the Doctor"
Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Matthew 9:12-13
It was around 1985 when a friend of mine was backpacking through Jordan. It was late afternoon or early evening when he stopped and watched three shepherds watering their flocks at a common well. As the flocks had mixed together, my friend wondered how the shepherds would separate them. Eventually, one stood up and called out, “Menah,” Arabic for “follow me.” Unbelievably, 30 sheep immediately walked out of the super-flock and began to follow their shepherd up the hill. The second shepherd shouted, “Menah,” and his flock followed after him. As for the other sheep, they acted as if nothing had happened.
When the third shepherd stood, my friend asked, “Would your sheep follow me if I called them?” The man shook his head. Having received permission to try, he called out, “Menah, Menah!” The sheep looked at him as if he had lost his mind. “Will they always follow you?” my friend asked. The shepherd said, “Always, except when a sheep is sick; then the creature follows anyone.”
Over the centuries, the Lord, using the power that comes from the means of grace, that is Word and Sacrament, has called a great many people to Him. Many of them, indeed all of them, in some way were sick. Some had a sickness of the body; all of us have a sickness of the soul. When by the power of the Law we recognize that sickness, Jesus steps in to help us with the Gospel’s healing power. The Great Physician makes us well.
What is your illness? Do you, like the ex-tax collector Matthew, feel alone and avoided? Have you been disappointed in love or hurt by uncaring hands? Are you frightened by the world’s hatred and prejudice? Jesus sends His Holy Spirit to call you to peace. Quite possibly you have been let down by those you counted on or betrayed by those who are closest to you. If so, be confident; Jesus will never desert you, He will never let you down.
This healing transformation can be yours. Today Jesus speaks to each of us saying, “Come, leave behind your life of sin and separation. Come, believe on Me and I will give you a new life worth living. Sick and sinful souls, come as you are; believe and be saved through your Physician’s healing hand.”

"Clarity"
For the word of God is living and active. . . Hebrews 4:12a
With prescription in hand, I left the doctor’s office. He had told me, “Be sure and take one of the pills I’m prescribing before every meal.” As I walked to the pharmacist, I looked at the remedy that had been written on very official looking paper. It said, “opiuirewqnjiopgfadfdaiop.”
Although I’m not an uneducated man, I couldn’t read what the physician had written. “No matter,” I thought to myself, “it’s probably just some kind of medical shorthand.” That’s what I believed until I overheard a whispered phone-call the pharmacist made to my doctor’s office. He said, “I don’t know what medicine I’m supposed to give Pastor Klaus. I don’t know if he has hoof-and-mouth or black plague. I’ve told you before, the doctor needs to write so I can read it.”
Apparently, my doctor is not unique. That’s why Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles is offering handwriting classes to their doctors. Nurses and administrators have been asked to “turn in” those physicians who might benefit the most from the three-hour class.
As I read that article carried by “Science Daily,” I had to admit that doctors are not alone in having their writings misunderstood. As any of the people who have worked with me over the years can attest, “There’s a reason I do my writing with a computer or typewriter rather than with a pen or pencil.”
Thankfully, God is one Person whose writings cannot be misunderstood. Nobody can look at the words of Scripture and say they are difficult to interpret. In Ephesians 2:8-9, the Lord says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
God’s words are clear, not cloudy. They are understandable, not incomprehensible. Look anywhere in the Bible, and you will find the facts of God’s great grace plainly stated. The Scriptures teach that each of us, left to our own devices, is condemned to an eternity in hell. Because God wished to save us from that punishment, He sent His Son to live, suffer, die, and rise. Now, by Spirit-given faith, all who believe on Jesus as their saving substitute have forgiveness and eternity in heaven.

"Differences"
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1
Everybody knows there are differences between deodorants, toothpaste, and dishwashing liquid. What has always amazed me is that many of those same people believe all religions and all denominations are the same.
Apparently, the Vatican does not agree. Last week, the “Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith” came out with a 16-page document that said Orthodox churches suffer from a “wound” since they don’t recognize the primacy of the Pope. The paper also said the “wound is still more profound” in Protestant denominations.
The story, filed by Reuters and carried on CNN, made a lot of people very angry. For the life of me, I don’t see why. Think about it. If the Pope of the Catholic Church doesn’t believe the doctrines of his church are right, then why should he, or anyone else, be Catholic. The same could be said about Lutherans, Baptists, Hindus, or Mormons.
There is simply no point in having a church if you don’t believe that church is teaching the truth.
This, of course, leads to the question, “Is truth just a matter of opinion?” Some people want to know, “How can I know which denomination and which faith system has the truth?” Other people, like Pontius Pilate, maintain, “There is simply no way of ever knowing, of ever being sure that what you believe is right.”
If you, or someone you know, holds either of those opinions, there is something this devotion wants you to consider. Of all the world’s “holy books,” the Bible is unique. It is unique because it is founded in history, not in imagination. It is unique because it makes prophecies (impossible prophecies), and then shows how God has fulfilled them. It is unique because it tells of how God’s Son became one of us to do what we could not do for ourselves. It is unique because it says salvation is not earned but given.
Because the Bible is unique and true, then those who hold to Scripture can be sure they have been given God’s own truth. Their trust can be given, or withheld, from a religion, a denomination, or a congregation in direction proportion to its faithfulness to the truth of God’s Word.
