Are our instant/private messages automatically deleted on this site?

I have sent several and received several and now my INbox is empty as is my OUTbox.

Just wondering...

I use the same software as CU on my Christian Photographers site--but an upgrade of this and I've never lost Private Messages on my site.

My both boxes on here are empty and I really wanted to keep a couple of special ones I received from a few folks on here the last couple of evenings.

Now, they are gone...

Brothers and Sisters,

ADMIN will have to answer this one. I didn't know about the out-box when I first started here. When I did find out about it, it was too large to open. I asked ADMIN to empty my out-box so I could use it. There were over a thousand there in my account. I really don't know if ADMIN did anything except on my account. If there are some like me who didn't know about the out-box, their out-box would also be too big to open. I really don't know how many messages the out-box will handle before it bogs the system down and won't open. The same is probably true of the in-box. Too many there would eventually bog the system down or not open.

I only asked for action on my account, but I did suggest that there might be others just like me, massive out-boxes that couldn't be opened. I also suggested very many accounts like mine might slow down the server.  Of course, mine was ridiculous and over 1,000 messages. I'm guessing that something reasonable would be below 25.

A report has been sent to ADMIN, so I'll try to get back with you. If my suggestion caused anyone inconvenience, I apologize and will report to the town square for a flogging.   Cheesy   Seriously, I do apologize if my suggestion caused anyone problems.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Strange, Tom...  I only had 9 in my outbox and 13 in my inbox.  I've only been on the site for a week so didn't have time to get them higher in numbers.  And was this just last night that you asked them to empty yours?  Mine were there last night as I was going to print them out as several were just so lovely that I had received.

By the way, that's one thing I've noticed with the upgraded software.  There's no bogging down of the PMs in the service.  I do know that when I ran this version on Christian Photographers, the same thing happened to me several times as I had so many being the Admin of the site but it doesn't happen with the upgraded version at all.

Shylynne,

Yes, you can tar and feather me, but only if you use really pretty peacock feathers.   Grin

Patzt,

Yes, it was last night that I asked ADMIN to delete my out-box so I could use it again. I've read a lot about the update for YABB SE, called Simple Machines Forum. I would first want to tell everyone that I know almost nothing about forum software. I did run a BBS for many years, but a forum is much more complicated, especially if the database runs more than just a forum. There are rave reviews from everyone who is using Simple Machines Forum, even from the first beta releases. I understand that it is close to a final release and most of he bugs worked out. It is supposed to be as fast as greased lightning.   Grin  I do know a little bit about database functions, and I think that the database portion is responsible for the much greater speed.

I also understand that Simple Machines Forum offers a lot of new features and excellent stability. If I understand things correctly, the final release should be ready to go any day now. When the final release does come out, we'll need to send ADMIN home-made cookies, lots of coffee, and a sympathy card for all the work involved.

Actually, upgrading is relatively easy. The hardest part is uploading all the new SMF files. SMF has a lot more files than YaBB SE does, but it works great and has many great features that I'm sure everyone here will love... I'm new here  (Pat invited me), but as a support person for SMF, I know a lot about the system and have converted many forums (including Pat's). I will look into this PMs thing. I just sent myself a PM and it arrived just fine, so I don't know what the deal is. Smiley

Hello Oldiesmann,

WELCOME!!!!

I've read about the new Simple Machines software, and it sounds great. Do you know when it might come out of beta and into a full release? I think they've had various beta releases for over 7 months now. I know that beta does not necessarily indicate stability problems, but it does cause concern.

No I don't unfortunately. The current version is actually quite stable. In fact, the software has been quite stable for a long time now. I've been a support person for 6 months now and there really haven't been any major stability issues, mainly bug fixes and new features. RC2 is perfectly stable. In fact, there are many huge forums running SMF at the moment, and none of them have reported any stability problems at all:

dubcc.com/forum - 6483 members
redandwhitekop.com/forum - 5855 members
army.ca/forums - 4617 members

The largest SMF board that I know of right now is the support forum for the PHP/MySQL photo gallery software Coppermine. They're running the previous RC version (RC1) but they've got 10026 members and have been running SMF for some time now.
