If Gore had been elected, would we all be wearing burkas now?

Oldtimer, Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Gar, if you don't understand the question, that's fine. It's a tongue-in-cheek expression of my lack of confidence in the former candidate and his ability to handle terrorism, and a not-so-embellished acknowledgement of terrorist envy and need to oppress those more powerful than themselves. But that really isn't nearly as lighthearted as, "Would burkas have been the new Gore-tex?" Now that the war's being wrapped up on one front, the question comes to mind: What do *you* suppose would have been Gore's response to the WTC attack?

So you think religion doesn't influence culture. Hm. My question would be, why are the veiled women all in these islamic nations? Many things influence culture, from ideology to landscape.

And the 5000 who died in the wtc were attacked by...? Not the Taliban. Well, in a sense this is true. Except providing cover for a.q. might implicate them in some way? Ok...

No problem. It takes more than that to offend me.  Smiley

Now come on. There's a difference between being veiled and wearing a burqa. Different tribes have different ways, different headwear, etc. These things predate Islam. Get real. These are tribal people.

I deleted the post you are responding to because I had the feeling you just wouldn't get it. No offense was intended.

But you said these things were cultural, not religious. I'm interested in your stance on the steep, cultural influences of religion. I'd need to see authoritative proof on the cultural mores, because I don't believe there is any difference between veils an Birkies other than the degree of oppression, both of which, by the way, still remain static to the *Islamic culture.* How would you explain this undeniable connection?

Is it that complicated?  If Gore were president, would we be wearing burkas now---um, well, would the LADIES, hehe, be wearing burkas?

Good point.  I wonder how things WOULD be going, were someone else president.  President Bush, and the armed forces, certainly have done a bangup job.
