I'm reading: Tested by Fire: The Fruit of Suffering in the Lives of John Bunyan, William Cowper and David Brainerd by John Piper at the moment.

I've never read the Pilgrim's Progress  Embarrassed I have a copy though, but I took against Bunyan years ago. I've read Lewis' Pilgrim's Regress though.

May I suggest that you read Bunyan, Broken.  After all he has a rather long established record.  Maybe you will then be "mended."   It is rather like saying you read "Herald Tribune" when one is asked to read " New York Times"  Cool

A Translation of

  MODERN ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Now let me praise the keeper of Heaven's kingdom,
The might of the Creator, and his thought,
The work of the Father of glory, how each of wonders
The Eternal Lord established in the beginning.
He first created for the sons of men
Heaven as a roof, the holy Creator,
Then Middle-earth the keeper of mankind,
The Eternal Lord, afterwards made,
The earth for men, the Almighty Lord.

I'll probably get around to reading Bunyan someday Wink I just always thought....what a dreary guy. & I can't say I'm over-fond of his way of expressing himself. As its a classic, I will probably read it soon - once I've got through the book I'm reading at the moment and then I've got some weird book I picked up somewhere about the dance of God or something like that.

Well, well, Lance, someone recognised my signature. Smiley Though you've quoted two versions in the OE you know. I'm proud of the fact that Caedmon came from my region Grin

Further North, though in the same region. Bede was from just down the road, Cuthbert to the left. I'm from Northumberland (as it was before Margaret Thatcher decided to change the county boundaries)

Goodness Broken,
Northumberland is miles north of Whitby or as the Yanks say, "An hour's drive."  LOL

Whitby is part of the old kingdom of Northumbria Smiley

Thats why Caedmon wrote his hymn in Northumbrian OE.

Oh !  I stand corrected.  And that is after getting my [old] map out too.  LOL

Those who have no idea where Whitby is should click here for a charming [Yorkshire] fishing port

Between Lance and Broken I am certainly becoming acquainted with the history of English Literature (as not taught in the States).
Alas - I fear that even if I went out and found the forementioned works I wouldn't understand a word.  Has it been translated to basic Texan?  Grin

Pilgrims Progress, an excellent book. I wish more people would read it. It realy makes you think, if you allow it. Enjoy

If true Tibby, you should read it a few more times.

When I was a kid Paul Bunyan was a storybook from the library, not a cartoon (maybe it became one, and that's too bad because they are never like the original books). The story of a giant lumberjack with a blue ox named babe.
