When is legalism not of grace and grace not of legalism in the following quote posted by "brotherlove" at the thread Kudzu Christians - GRACE WALK - Weekly Devotional
« Reply #16 on: Today at 03:20:52pm » .

"That's why we are convinced that renewing our minds constantly on the truth of the gospel of the grace of God (Acts 20:24) is crucial to experiencing victory over the ongoing bombardment of legalism"

Does that statement contain legalism in that it states a thing that must be adhered to or done in order to experience victory over legalism.

Is this not using legalism to combat legalism?

Hi Ollie:
It really sounds more like he is making a personal statement of conviction ***that's why we are convinced...***.

If he were to move it into the realm of imposing that conviction upon you, or anyone else, it would then become legalism.

Essentially, legalism is imposing upon someone else one's own personally held belief or conviction concerning any matter.

Brothers and Sisters,

All of the answers are in JESUS!

(Galatians 3:9)  So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

(Galatians 3:10)  For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

(Galatians 3:11)  But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

(Galatians 3:12)  And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

(Galatians 3:13)  Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

(Galatians 3:14)  That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Ollie, Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Galatians 2:16

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Romans 11:6

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Romans 4:5

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Romans 3:24

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Titus 3:5

What exactly is legalism?

We define legalism as a system of living in which a person tries to make spiritual progress or gain God’s acceptance based on what they do. Legalism is focused on behavior and is therefore an achieving system. Legalism is the opposite of grace. Grace is a system of living in which God blesses us because we are in Jesus Christ and for no other reason at all. Grace is focused on our spiritual birth and is therefore a receiving system. Consider a couple of Scriptures: "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us" (Galatians 3:13). "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age" (Titus 2:11-12). For further reading refer to Grace Walk pages 79-86.
