The topic of embryo research and stem cell research has came up in class before and of course we say what we think about it.  I am against it by the way.  It is just when we were giveing our thoughts in class a question poped up in my head.  When do our bodies get their souls?  Is it when the egg and sperm meet?  Because when Jesus says you are saved you are made whole, so would that be the same for our body and soul?  I know that you guys probly can't answer this but I just thought this very interesting.

Oklahoma Howdy to Kris777,

You asked a very interesting question. I'm just going to give you an opinion and see if any others have comments or opinions. Numerous portions of Scripture refer to God knowing a person in their mother's womb. Other portions of Scripture refer to God knowing the number of hairs on our heads before the foundation of the world. I'm positive that many answers rest only with Almighty God, the Creator. The difference between man and animal is that man has a soul, and I think that man has one from the very first spark of life in a mother's womb. This is only one reason why I am totally against abortion. I didn't give you a very Biblical answer, but I did give you an opinion from the heart.

In Christ,
Tom

This is an interesting question.  I agree with BEP thoughts.  From conception, (first spark of life as said) a living being has begun.

Jer 1:5  Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

That one is a mind blower!  Before we are even formed in the womb he knew us!  Trying to grasp that one is like trying to teach algebra to a fly...lol

We each have a Body, soul, and spirit.

1Th 5:23  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God told Adam, "for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. "   Of course Adam didn't die that day, his spirit did.  So when we are saved, our spirit is reborn.  Maybe this is what is meant by being made whole again?

Grace and Peace!

Another interesting question that I thought of is what about twins?  Or what about when sciencetists seperate stem cells, and put them in the mother's womb, I wonder if each one then gets a soul?  So then what if someone fertilizes an eggs outside of a womens body?  I know that these are questions that you guys probably can't answer but I was just always curious about this.  Thanks guys for your responses so far.

As much as science tinkers with life and cells they certainly cannot form man out of the dust of the earth.  Regardless of how cells may be manipulated, God is the one who forms the soul spirit and body, and his word says he knows that individual before they are formed.  It is facinating stuff. Although science may be making headway in understanding it....I'm afraid we are simply not equiped to graps Gods amazing wonders and how he forms life from nothing.  Life is truly a miracle.

Grace and Peace!

Amen, BEP.

And I believe this to be the same, whether the child is inside or outside a human womb. It is a living thing, a marvelous, intricate creation that cannot be duplicated by any other means than what God has approved.

Babies are such controversial subjects; impossible sums of money, time and effort are spent trying to save children born prematurely, while another mother throws her offspring away like a failed lab experiment. But they are still mothers, and they still suffer the loss of a child, even if they do not admit it. They are expected to recover instantly and go on with their life, but not everyone can do that.

The book "Tilly" by Frank Perretti is a very loving glimpse into the story of a woman recovering from an abortion, and makes an excellent read.

Oklahoma Howdy to All,

AMEN 2nd Timothy and Willowbirch!

Kris777, I am glad that you are seriously questioning some of the things done in the name of science. There is no question that all life was and is created by Almighty God. I would go further and say that all life belongs to God for HIS purpose.

I wouldn't pretend to understand the moral implications of many things being done in laboratories these days. One would first have to have a scientific understanding of what is actually being done, and I lack that understanding. As a simple person, I would probably not like or approve of many things being done.

On the question of abortion, I don't have any questions on that subject. I would simply call it murder, in the absence of some rare medical exception.

In Christ,
Tom

We know from James that the spirit leaves the physical body and returns to God at the moment of physical death. Thinking that soul and spirit are the same in this case, although in many instances they are refered as seperate entities, two thirds of the makeup of man, body, soul, spirit, may give a clue as to when the body receives the soul or spirit. If it departs at death, then it must come at conception or the start of life.

Just a thought on the question.

Life begins in the womb and to take a life is murder.

Another thing to discuss (does this deserve its own topic?):

In early 2003, Reader's Digest published an article on experimental "head-changes". Now, this can't be an incredibly new thing, since the Digest isn't exactly cutting-edge information.

At the time of the article, scientists had been able to switch heads between two different species of monkey. The end result lived a short time, minutes or hours, unable to do much more than growl. (I'd growl too.) Since this was featured in RD, I'm sure the experimentations had already progressed beyond this.

Scientists wish to bring this to the realm of humans, by offering a new cure-all, namely a "whole new body". If you hate your body, or you're very ill, someday you will be able to put your own head on a healthier frame.

(Inserts *Twilight Zone* music)

What could be the spiritual consequences of this? Perhaps the processes of thinking, memory, etc. are in the brain. My personal theory, not an informed one, is that the human soul resides in the vicinity of the heart (really! I just did some remodeling in my inner house!...) So if a person is dead and their "soul" goes to its predetermined destination...

If you put a head on another person's body, will that head (along with memories, etc) inherit someone else's soul? Or will the soul leave the body, and you end up with a living body without a human spirit?

Another one of my personal theories is that the human body, made in the likeness of God, demands a "spark" as long as it is alive. Will a soul-less, living corpse attract demonic possesion, even if it only lives for a while?

Which reminds me, C.S. Lewis wrote a futuristic trilogy, part of which included a terrorist's severed head being revived by science...it spoke, but it wasn't the terrorist anymore...hm!
