Aye, to true.
32  Theology / Bible Study / Re: Bible Triva on: August 07, 2008, 05:42:49 PM
I have researched this further, and have found that there is folklore about dugongs being mermaids.  I would think that someone would have to be sick or drunk to believe that the ugly beast in the watter was a beautiful mermaid.  Yet mermaid stories have been around for some time.

A Dictionary of the Bible By James Hastings, John Alexander Selbie has an interesting paragraph or two about the Badger.  It sounds like this is a mystery, one we have just stumbled onto, but has been debated for some time.

There are probably better things to deliberate on anyhow.

Sincerely,
The MangoMan

First off, don't take this as argumentative.  I dig intelligent conversation.

I will point out that was a quote from NetBible, not MangoMan about Tuchash.  I highlighted it and gave them the credit.  If you disagree with them go for it.  I figure they have researched it thoroughly, but then to, we are human and subject to failure.

I am curious why a mysterious beast would appear out of no where, be instrumental in the creation of the tabernacle, but not be clearly identified in the Bible, and then suddenly go extinct.  I would think something of that magnitude would have deserved a mention in the Bible... the mighty leviathan did.

I tend to lean more towards the sea cow or dugongs as the indigenous people have called them.  The NetBible source believes it was a translation error that resulted in the use of badger instead of sea cow.  If I were to go with your references to a mysterious desert beast with a precious skin of many colors and figured in the Tabernacle, why would have it been used in the making of sandals?  Ezek. 16:10  Wouldn't that have been degrading?

I guess I also am curious why naturalists would have given it a name of Halicore tabernaculi.  Noting history, which is subject to human error, people remember or pass down important pieces of information.  Yes, stories change with time, some become legends, others just nuggets of truth.

I am also aware of the Jewish tradition to embelish a story.  Far be it for a rabbi to not partake of embelishing a story as it is passed down.

Again, thoughtful deliberation.
Sincerely,
The MangoMan

Honestly, one man can't by himself change the face of government.  Obama or McCain can influence it.  I guess what makes this race so pivotal is that the body or bueacracy (sp?) of government is corrupt and if Obama were to win, yeah, you'll see change like you won't believe.  Obama would be the head, but the head can't move if the body is not behind it.

I heard a quote once, don't know who originated it...

The punishment of a wise man not involved in government is being ruled by not so wise people.  Sub in Christians for the wise man, and non Christians for the not so wise people.  Chilling.

Ok, I won't pull up my LazyBoy recliner and grab some popcorn and a pop.  Yeah, Pop, the stuff you drink.  Down with you soda drinkers!  How can anyone like a water and baking soda combination.  That's just... yukky as my niece would say, maybe even ewwwwwwwwww!

Ok, I'll head back to the land of seriousness.  It maybe ragingly insane, but it's not funny.  The life of this country is at stake, possibly even the world.  Look to Britain, once a vibrant Christian nation reaching around the empire, it's anything but that.  I still remember a friend of mine after returning from a business trip remarking about the churches with boarded up windows.  Europe is in the same bucket of slop.  I don't mince my words either.  Before the rise of Charlamagne, the Moors (Islamic in nature) were trying to sweep into Europe but were not successful.  Alas, the "Moors" have returned to a sick populace.  I've heard tale of the horror stories of the skin trade in Belgium, isn't that the home of Corrie Ten Boom?  With the rise of the arabic populace it won't surprise me to see them cracking down on the corruption and instituting Sharia (sp?) law there.  The local government is afraid of the arab residents.  Don't think America is too far behind.  Our government is scared stiff.

When the hearts and minds of the people become depraved, their destruction looms.  Not my words, I'm sure they've been echoed through time, but history shows it's truth, and history repeats itself.

Yes, it appears my attempts were snarled up in reading the KJV.  There's a website I like that has nine English versions that I can thumb between and have done so.  To my chagrin, the NIV does make more sense.  That said, I am amazed at what other Christian ministries have out there for reference.  I even found the Greek Bible online with study help.  I have had a semester or two of Greek a little ways back in high school, but alas I don't remember much for the website looks like Greek to me... duh!

I enjoy your Bible Trivia Ms. Grammyluv... and the occasional references to baseball, much to the amusement of the Charlie Brown fan.

Sincerely,
The MangoMan

Ok... I know it was covered... Exodus 40:3 and Numbers 4:5... sometimes the vail of the covering... sometimes the covering vail

I know that the Ark of the Covenant has also been referenced as the Ark of the Testimony.

I believe it was a symbolic physical resting place of the Spirit of God.  I'm stretching again.  God doesn't need a resting place.  The people of Israel needed something to for lack of better words, carry God in.  Today, that place is in our "hearts" or as some would say "minds".  Biblically I've been told the heart and mind are one.  Not the beating heart of course, although some could be accused of thinking with that.

Ok, this is like trying to hit one of Charlie Hough's dancing knuckleballs...

I've seen reference to badger skins... but I believe that is a secondary covering... to me there is a difference between a skin and a vail... difference in texture and weight...  Numbers 4:5-6 seems to support that the primary covering vail was overlaid with the secondary covering of badger skins which were blue in nature.

Here's what I've learned about the badger skins though... or should I say porpoise skins...

Our translators seem to have been misled by the similarity in sound of the Hebrew tachash_ and the Latin _taxus, "a badger." The revisers have correctly substituted "seal skins." The Arabs of the Sinaitic peninsula apply the name tucash to the seals and dugongs which are common in the Red Sea, and the skins of which are largely used as leather and for sandals. Though the badger is common in Palestine, and might occur in the wilderness, its small hide would have been useless as a tent covering. The dugong, (pictured above), very plentiful in the shallow waters on the shores of the Red Sea, is a marine animal from 12 to 30 feet long, something between a whale and a seal, never leaving the water, but very easily caught. It grazes on seaweed, and is known by naturalists as Halicore tabernaculi.

To be honest the secondary covering makes sense.  If it were a skin or hide of a badger or dolphin, it would overall protect the ark better than just a vail.  I believe the vail acted as a buffer between the skin and the ark though.

Ok, I had a college professor call me a masochist... in a good sense... I seemed to take the painful way in working out problems... I believe I done that here, because I have yet to put my mental fingers on what the coloring of the covering vail is.

I have struck out on this one.  You'll have to enlighten me.

Whew!

Now admittedly, I was stretching.  Now that I'm limber and ready to run, turn on over to Isaiah 22:18.

18 He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord's house.
(King James Version)

I know it's just a reference to a ball being tossed (a foul ball at that), but isn't that what baseball is, tossing a ball...

Just a little tongue in cheek banter.
Sincerely,
The MangoMan
39  Prayer / Prayer Requests / Urgent Prayer Request on: August 06, 2008, 06:25:07 PM
I'm in urgent need of a job.  I've been unemployed several months now.  I've been wondering if the Lord is trying to tell me something, I've been praying hard about this.  Been looking and applying for work across the gamut, but to no avail.  I don't know what to do, and unfortunately, I'm living with my parents again now which is not good.  My Dad has been hounding me argumentatively to get a job.  Short of pulling out a gun and demanding a job, I don't know what to do.  I wouldn't do that, but I can't make people hire me, only pray.  Dad doesn't see it that way and the pressure is mounting.  I haven't been depressed about it, just patiently finding positions and applying to them.  I've had some interviews, but no results.
Frazzled,

I agree with you 100%.

I want to throw out a red hot poker question.  I know it will rankle of few, and I'm not into pain.  Honestly, I'm just looking at this from a different angle.  If I'm out of line, correct me.

I believe that Obama will win in '08.  No doubt about it.  He's slicker than Slick Willie.  I believe the Republicans don't learn from their mistakes.  Bob Dole, nice guy, but was no contender to the charismatic, affable guy we know as President Bill Clinton.  McCain is a repeat of that election in my mind.  I have heard Obama lie, but for some reason he holds the hearts and minds of the American people in rapt.  They trust him.

Let me toss out my question.  Give me five minutes to run for cover and then fire away.  As I look out around the world, I see the scourge of Islam in Iran being used by God to foster the radically cool growth of the arabic church, and the heel of Communist Capitalism in China being used to do the same there.  Is it out of line to wonder if God might use Obama to re-awaken the American church whose majority has grown fat, lazy and sassy?  We love the pursuit of the temporal things this world has to offer, just like our unsaved brothers and sisters.  We live in this world, and I wonder how conformed to this world we have become.  [Yes, there are American Christians who are doing the Lord work.  I am grateful for that.]

I asked my sister that, and barely survived the ear chewing I got back in return.  I suppose asking a young mother that was a bad question.  But seriously, God does not appreciate the lukewarm Christian, such a Christian makes Him vomit.

Ok, remember, five minutes to let me run for cover.  I've got a nuke proof shelter somewhere in Montana.  Hopefully I can find it before the volleys of angry retorts start to home in on me.

Sincerely,
MangoMan
41  Theology / Bible Prescription Shop / So Ya Wanna Your Prayers To Be Heard, Eh? on: August 06, 2008, 12:51:53 PM
It amazes me that the divorce rate in the Baptist realm is over 50%.  Could it be neither the woman involved or the man really listen to each other, respect each other, care for each other physically, emotionally, or spiritually, love each other as Christ commanded us?

I am aware that the man bears the responsibility here, but it is a two way relationship.  I'm not going to get into the roles of the marriage couple here.  My point initially was about ya prayers being heard.  I think if men heeded the words of the Lord in 1 Peter 3:7, the divorce rate just might fall off significantly.  It at least goes to show that the Lord expects a lot out of the man, and lays a lot of responsibility on him.

Sincerely,
MangoMan

I have decided to run in '08 on the platform of "FREE Mangos for Everyone!".  I might be green on the outside, but I've a soft heart on the inside.

Okay, before anyone smacks me upside the olde head and says "You're out!".  I'm stretching a little, but in good-natured fun...

Where in the Bible does God show his prowess in Baseball and field a foul ball?
(Genesis, Ruth, Isaiah, Matthew, or Revelations)
43  Entertainment / Politics and Political Issues / Re: Obama on: August 06, 2008, 12:15:08 PM
"Where are the SANE and quite AVERAGE people who used to run this country? They don't even need to be Christians, just people with some common sense who care about the future of this country."

One, do you dare to spend the money it takes to run for a prominent office?

Two, do you dare to walk a slippery slop of mud slinging and trash talking?  Sure, you might not be the one slinging the mud and trash talking, but the public would see that as weakness.

Three, do you dare to let your dirty laundry be aired in public, for all to see?  No one's perfect, not even a Christian, but the political smear campaigns don't care.

My apologies for my pessimistic overtures.

Sincerely,
MangoMan
