16  Entertainment / Books / Re: What is everyone reading? on: December 28, 2007, 01:07:38 AM
I noticed that some of the preceding posts mentioned  Bill O'Reilly's latest,  Culture Warrior.  I just got it for Christmas, and though I enjoyed it a lot, one thing he said astonished me.  On page 177 of the paperback,  he refers to Saint Paul as  'a  Roman warrior and pagan activist before conversion'.   What?Huh?  Surely Paul was a Jewish tentmaker, and a Pharisee.
17  Entertainment / Animals and Pets / Re: Cat and Dog poll on: December 28, 2007, 12:49:32 AM
I like all animals--well, mammals, I suppose. But I really love dogs and I take in abused and abandoned ones.  I have 2 pit bulls and one lab/border collie, and until last spring also had an old collie cross who was a real treasure.  Where I live the by-laws limit the number of dogs you can have, but if I had a choice I would have a dozen!  Cats are fine,  but to me they just can't compete with dogs for companionship and affection.
18  Theology / Debate / Re: The Role of a Christian Woman on: December 28, 2007, 12:09:17 AM
Thank you, Pastor---you certainly know how to unpack a Bible verse. I like that quote from the rabbi because I think it describes very well what many people experience during marriage: usually a bond of help and support,  but, on occasion, utter frustration with the spouse!  Well,  maybe it's just me.

There was a news item yesterday on TV about a couple celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. They said that the length and happiness of their marriage was due to  'a forgiving spirit'.  How wise, and of course exactly what the Lord has prescribed for all of us, all the time.
19  Theology / Debate / Re: The Role of a Christian Woman on: December 27, 2007, 09:00:13 PM
May I add an interesting quote from an orthodox rabbi?  It's in a study of Genesis.

"No sooner has the first man discovered the first woman than a problem arises, in essence THE problem of all human association.  The Bible puts this neatly and bluntly.  Woman is 'ezer ke-negdo',  standardly translated as 'a suitable helper'.  The translation misses the point.  'Ezer' means she is a help.  'Ke-negdo' means she is 'over-and-against' him.  She is not only a help but also a potential adversary.  She is a separate self, a person, an equal, not subordinate to the male.
..........Once Adam has recognized Eve as an equal-but-opposite, without whom he cannot beget life,  God Himself blesses their union."

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
20  Theology / Prophecy - Current Events / Re: Bhutto assassinated in suicide attack on: December 27, 2007, 08:11:32 PM
One very sad thing about this sad situation is that the suicide bomber would have been convinced that his act would take him directly to Heaven.  I also read today (on Steynonline) that the police think that one of the bombers who tried to kill Benazir Bhutto in October, used his one-year-old child as 'cover'--of course, the baby must have died with its father. Presumably the father was told that both he and the child would go straight to Heaven as a reward for their  'glorious act of martyrdom'.
The Muslim 'religious' leaders who brainwash others and fill them with hatred and lies are so despicable,  I can't think of words to describe them.
21  Theology / Bible Study / Re: FAITH LESSONS IN BIBLE STUDIES on: December 27, 2007, 07:39:36 PM
Hi Islandboy!  I have been reading and learning from this study,  I haven't posted here yet because I need more time to re-read and absorb the information.

It is an interesting study for me because just before Christmas I was teaching 10-and 11-year olds about the main characters in Genesis.  Jacob is a difficult one to explain due to his duplicity, but while the children had no problem with the story of his dream and the setting up of the stone, I found it difficult to explain to them the meaning of his struggle with the angel.  They couldn't understand why Jacob 'won' and was able to demand a blessing. Do you have any ideas on how I can explain this to them?
22  Fellowship / You name it!! / Re: Coffee Time! on: December 23, 2007, 06:09:12 PM
I was surprised to read the criticisms of Pres. Bush in some preceding posts.  I think that Pres. Bush is a fine man and that he cares deeply for his country.
But of course just because I disagree with some opinions, still we are all brothers and sisters! Gal. 3:28.

May everyone have a blessed Christmas!
23  Theology / Bible Prescription Shop / Re: Should I question the lack of mention of pro-life issues at a friend's church? on: December 23, 2007, 05:41:48 PM
Thank you!  It's good to know that I have brothers and sisters on this site to pray for me.
24  Theology / Bible Prescription Shop / Re: Should I question the lack of mention of pro-life issues at a friend's church? on: December 22, 2007, 01:17:02 PM
I have been attending this church with my friend  for a year and a half now, and I go every second week  (this was in order to encourage him to go, as his wife died  of cancer in the summer of 2006, and she asked me to make sure that he continued to go to church).  The teaching is definitely Bible-based, my problem is not with what I am hearing, only with what I am not hearing. I cannot understand the lack of mention of abortion, a terrible scourge here --the public schools are allowed to counsel girls over the age of 13 to have an abortion (and to arrange it for them) and if any school employee tells the girl's parents, they will be fired.  Also all abortions are free (paid by taxpayers' money, of course).
Perhaps I should bring some pro-life pamphlets and books and offer to donate them to the church?  If the church has a policy of not speaking out about abortion (maybe for fear of 'offending' women who have had an abortion--I often encounter that attitude), I would rather try to gently change that policy than to just leave. If they refuse to accept or display the pro-life material, then that would be a reason to leave, but of course would not help my friend at all.  You can see my dilemma!
25  Entertainment / Politics and Political Issues / Re: Mom threatened with jail for teaching kids at home on: December 22, 2007, 12:10:46 PM
Well, that's a terrifying story!  I don't know what the Utah public schools teach, but where I live they are required to teach about homosexuality in every grade and in every subject---this to satisfy a 'human rights' case brought against the government, which  gave in rather than spend millions of dollars on a case it knew it couldn't win. My children are grown now, but my daughter is getting married soon, and  if she is blessed with children, I hope we will not have to face the same obstacles to home schooling as the Utah lady.
A threat to take away someone's children is one of the strongest a government can use to control people.  And when I have read cases like this in the newspapers, it is always Christian families that are the targets.
26  Entertainment / Politics and Political Issues / Re: Huckabee in GOP top tier on: December 22, 2007, 11:55:55 AM
Thanks for explaining that. Did the in-fighting in the SBC result in an actual split into 2 official groups, or was it resolved by one group winning?  Sorry about my ignorance, I attend a small independent fellowship so I don't know much about the large denominations.

Also, I read recently that Jimmy Carter had left one group of Baptists for another group which permits the ordination of women. Is that correct?

27  Theology / Apologetics / Re: A question about salvation on: December 22, 2007, 11:46:18 AM
Thaks, Pastor , you have answered my question. I think I was confused more by the way the author expressed himself than by his point. It was just that it sounded as though he meant that the Muslim and the Shinto priest could continue in those faiths while at the same time calling on, and being saved by, Jesus. I wanted to clear up that point because I want to lend the book to non-Christian friends.
28  Theology / Apologetics / A question about salvation on: December 22, 2007, 12:27:26 AM
I have a book, written by a Baptist pastor,  which has helped me a great deal.  However, there is one part that puzzles me. The author says, " If a Muslim asks God to save him and he uses Jesus' name, God will save him.  If  a Shinto priest uses that name, God will save him."  Now, I realise that he is just making his point that salvation comes from Jesus, but it would also follow that  someone practising a different religion would immediately stop that practice, wouldn't it?
29  Entertainment / Politics and Political Issues / Re: Huckabee in GOP top tier on: December 22, 2007, 12:00:53 AM
I was going by the information in a Washington Post article by Robert Novak, which pointed out that a prominent Southern Baptist conservative from Texas,  Judge Paul Pressler, is backing Thompson. The article says that during 'the Baptist wars' in the 70s, Gov. Huckabee fought against the conservatives, including Judge Pressler.    This is all new to me, I am not from the South and was not a Christian in the 70s. I like Gov. Huckabee a lot, I hope he can gain the support of the GOP, but I rather think that Sen. McCain will be the candidate.
30  Entertainment / Movies / Re: Dutch Lawmaker Planning Film Criticizing the Koran on: December 21, 2007, 11:30:49 PM
Wow, I hope that Mr. Wilders and his family have an army of security around them.

I think we should all pray for Ayaan Hirsi Ali, now living in the U.S.  She rejected the Islam which caused her so much suffering, but unfortunately became an atheist, instead of looking for the true faith.
