16  Theology / General Theology / Re: TODAY IN THE WORD on: February 01, 2008, 04:27:10 PM
Read: Exodus 1:1-22
My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long. - Psalm 71:15
TODAY IN THE WORD
The book Evidence Not Seen tells the story of Darlene Deibler Rose, an American missionary during World War II. She and her husband, along with their colleagues, were captured by the Japanese army, and some of the captives died in the prison camps during the years they were detained. Despite horrific suffering and great tragedy, Darlene remained strong in her trust in God. Her story illustrates extraordinary faith and God's miraculous faithfulness in trials.

As we consider our own legacy, we're inspired by stories like this. This month we'll study another story of faith and courageous leadership—the story of Moses.

We wouldn't be fair to the truth of the biblical text to claim that it is a story of one man. The story of Moses features divine providence at center stage, not human heroism. Moses plays an important role in God's story, but as we shall see this month, Moses' actions apart from the work of God could not produce the miraculous results for his people.

Our text today illustrates how God's presence permeates the story. His blessing was clearly seen in the population explosion of the Israelites following the death of Joseph. The language of verse seven echoes God's blessing pronounced in the Garden of Eden (cf. Gen. 1:28), to Noah (cf. Gen. 9:1), and once again to Abraham (cf. Gen. 17:2). The promises He had made to these men—promises to multiply their offspring—were being fulfilled. God had neither forgotten nor neglected His people.

That is important reassurance as we read about the tragic turn of events in verse eight. God's people were suffering unjustly as they were forced into slave labor and threatened by a murderous royal edict. Despite the cruel plots of Pharaoh, God protected His people. In fact, it seems that no human action could thwart God's work of rescue in this opening chapter. Though the Egyptians attempted to wipe out the Hebrews, God's people not only survived—they thrived (v. 12).
TODAY ALONG THE WAY
As readers of this chapter, we see God's intervention in the Hebrews' suffering. But the Hebrew slaves didn't have this vantage point, and no doubt many of them wondered, “Where is God?” We are often unaware of much of the “behind-the-scenes” action. What would it be like to know of the moments in our lives when God has protected us? When God has provided? Ask God for eyes of faith to see His invisible work in your own life and to trust Him when you don't understand the events in your life.

17  Theology / General Theology / Re: Why did Christ have to die ? on: February 01, 2008, 04:20:58 PM
Here's a few more from God's word to show you that God's plan has not changed but rather that it has only been man's understanding that has changed.

Gal 2:16  Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Gal 3:10  For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Gal 3:11  But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Gal 3:21  Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Gal 3:22  But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Rom 4:13  For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Heb 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Heb 11:2  For by it the elders obtained a good report.
Heb 11:3  Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Heb 11:4  By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Heb 11:5  By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
Heb 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Heb 11:7  By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Heb 11:8  By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
Heb 11:9  By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
Heb 11:10  For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Heb 11:11  Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
Heb 11:12  Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
Heb 11:13  These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Heb 11:14  For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
Heb 11:15  And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
Heb 11:16  But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Heb 11:17  By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
Heb 11:18  Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
Heb 11:19  Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
Heb 11:20  By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
Heb 11:21  By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
Heb 11:22  By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
Heb 11:23  By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
Heb 11:24  By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
Heb 11:25  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
Heb 11:26  Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Heb 11:27  By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
Heb 11:28  Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
Heb 11:29  By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.
Heb 11:30  By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
Heb 11:31  By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
Heb 11:32  And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
Heb 11:33  Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
Heb 11:34  Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Heb 11:35  Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
Heb 11:36  And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
Heb 11:37  They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
Heb 11:38  (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
Heb 11:39  And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
Heb 11:40  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Eph 2:8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

It is faith that saved those of old as it does now, for no man has been justified by the works of the law.

Brothers and Sisters,

I won't say that I'm shocked because I'm NOT. There are examples almost daily now that filth and garbage is welcome almost everywhere, but GOD isn't. The sewers are open and it's hard to get away from the stench. It's ironic that nearly all of the premier colleges in this country started out as Christian Colleges, but GOD is no longer welcome on the campus. Our societies are collapsing under the weight of filth, decadence, and depravity.  It's a course of self-destruction, and the devil loves it.

All the area schools were closed down and local businesses either closed or worked with skeleton crews. Yep, global warming sure made a mess of things here.   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

24  Theology / Prophecy - Current Events / Re: United Nations on: January 30, 2008, 02:28:42 PM
Ezekiel 38:14-23 NASB
"Therefore prophesy, son of man, and say to Gog, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "On that day when My people Israel are living securely, will you not know it? "You will come from your place out of the remote parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great assembly and a mighty army; and you will come up against My people Israel like a cloud to cover the land. It shall come about in the last days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me when I am sanctified through you before their eyes, O Gog." 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Are you the one of whom I spoke in former days through My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for many years that I would bring you against them? "It will come about on that day, when Gog comes against the land of Israel," declares the Lord GOD, "that My fury will mount up in My anger. "In My zeal and in My blazing wrath I declare that on that day there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. "The fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at My presence; the mountains also will be thrown down, the steep pathways will collapse and every wall will fall to the ground. "I will call for a sword against him on all My mountains," declares the Lord GOD. "Every man's sword will be against his brother. "With pestilence and with blood I will enter into judgment with him; and I will rain on him and on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, a torrential rain, with hailstones, fire and brimstone. "I will magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the sight of many nations; and they will know that I am the LORD."'

Ezekiel 39:1-7 NASB
"And you, son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal; and I will turn you around, drive you on, take you up from the remotest parts of the north and bring you against the mountains of Israel. "I will strike your bow from your left hand and dash down your arrows from your right hand. "You will fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; I will give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and beast of the field. "You will fall on the open field; for it is I who have spoken," declares the Lord GOD. "And I will send fire upon Magog and those who inhabit the coastlands in safety; and they will know that I am the LORD. "My holy name I will make known in the midst of My people Israel; and I will not let My holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

Ezekiel 39:17-22 NASB
"As for you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD, 'Speak to every kind of bird and to every beast of the field, "Assemble and come, gather from every side to My sacrifice which I am going to sacrifice for you, as a great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel, that you may eat flesh and drink blood. "You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, as though they were rams, lambs, goats and bulls, all of them fatlings of Bashan. "So you will eat fat until you are glutted, and drink blood until you are drunk, from My sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. "You will be glutted at My table with horses and charioteers, with mighty men and all the men of war," declares the Lord GOD. "And I will set My glory among the nations; and all the nations will see My judgment which I have executed and My hand which I have laid on them. "And the house of Israel will know that I am the LORD their God from that day onward.

Ezekiel 39:25-29 NASB
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name. "They will forget their disgrace and all their treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid. "When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. "Then they will know that I am the LORD their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. "I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel," declares the Lord GOD.

Isaiah 2:1-5 NASB
The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us concerning His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For the law will go forth from Zion And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And He will judge between the nations, And will render decisions for many peoples; And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war. Come, house of Jacob, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Isaiah 9:2-7 NASB
The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire. For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

Isaiah 65:17-25 NASB
"For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind. "But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; For behold, I create Jerusalem for rejoicing And her people for gladness. "I will also rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in My people; And there will no longer be heard in her The voice of weeping and the sound of crying. "No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, Or an old man who does not live out his days; For the youth will die at the age of one hundred And the one who does not reach the age of one hundred Will be thought accursed. "They will build houses and inhabit them; They will also plant vineyards and eat their fruit. "They will not build and another inhabit, They will not plant and another eat; For as the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, And My chosen ones will wear out the work of their hands. "They will not labor in vain, Or bear children for calamity; For they are the offspring of those blessed by the LORD, And their descendants with them. "It will also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear. "The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent's food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain," says the LORD.

Bravo brother Tom
Come Lord Jesus come "convert those Jews so we can all be lifted up and see the new Jerusalem.
25  Theology / Debate / Re: Why Churches are Declining in America on: January 30, 2008, 02:18:27 PM
As a new poster to this forum, I have not yet got a feel for everything here but like what I have seen so far.  I am currently attending a church with approximately 250 in regular attendance.  The church has recently gone through a rift and lost members and was in turmoil for a while.  In contrast, I came from a church that was down to about 90 members on a good Sunday.  The problem was both churches have let those with the money and the large tithe check determine the direction of the church rather than allowing God to guide them.  The church I am at now hired a senior minister that has put a stop to politics and is fighting the clicks that inevitably form within a church membership.  It has been very refreshing to see a church that is not dependant on the financial aspects of everything and instead trusts that God will provide.

That being said, I think that when a church is so driven by money and they start allowing those with the biggest wallet to start dictating how that money should be sent, then you are just asking to alienate members and make those that are not as well off to feel less important in the church.  This is a dangerous attitude for a church to have.  As for the megachurches, most merely preach a health, wealth and prosperity message and make people feel good about themselves.  I don't see how that can be a healthy message if you think that just because you are a Christian that your life will be a bed of roses and all things will be easy as long as you attend a certain church or adhere to the teachings of a man which I think is what a lot of megachurch members do. (Of course most of my experience with the megachurches is what I see on TV and read about).  Hopefully this made sense, it's kind of tough to write while at work and getting interruptions.

26  Theology / Debate / Re: what denomination are you? on: January 30, 2008, 01:44:08 PM
Actually I grew up Southern Baptist and my leanings still are towards those doctrines and teachings.  As I have gotten older and started questioning things like why I believe the way I believe or what I truly think a particular verse or passage means, I have joined a church that is non-denominational.  I still find myself cringing when I see people raising their hands in praise or when the arrangement for old hymns are changed to a more contemporary style but I am working on that.  I have never believed that my beliefs on doctrine were necessarily the only way to worship, it was just the way I chose to worship.  I guess you could say that I am still pretty conservative in the way I choose to worship, but I would never tell anyone that they are wrong in the way worship unless of course it is obviously not Biblical.  I figure it is not my place to judge one way or the other.

Read: Philippians 4:10-19
I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. - Philippians 4:11
TODAY IN THE WORD
Do you have any missionary newsletters lying on your desk or sitting in your e-mail inbox? How about missionary prayer photos on your refrigerator? Are you faithful in reading these letters, praying for the ministries, families, and spiritual lives of the missionaries, and keeping in touch with those whom you also count as personal friends? We encourage you to support God's work in these ways.

Did you know Paul's epistle to the Philippians is a missionary newsletter? In today's reading, he wrote to them specifically about their missionary support. Overall, he rejoiced that they had started giving again after a period of time in which they hadn't done so (v. 10). He was even more grateful that this had come not through a check (or the ancient equivalent of one) but through a personal emissary, Epaphroditus. The Philippian church had sent one of their own members to bring their gift and support Paul personally (see 2:25-30).

As important as gratitude is, however, the Apostle focused more on explaining the meaning of their gift and exhorting them to simplicity and humility. The significance of their gift did not lie in how it had helped him (though it had done so), but rather in being an act of worship. It was a “fragrant offering” to the Lord first, before any sense in which it was for him (vv. 17-18).

Paul also encouraged the Philippians to find contentment in simple trust, lest they be tempted to take pride in their giving. Contentment is not about circumstances, for Paul had known the highs and lows of those (vv. 11-12). Instead, contentment is found in faith (v. 13). With God, all things are possible and all needs are met (v. 19). That's why, ultimately, Paul put his faith in God and not in his supporters. This seems a strange thing to write to a church that had just sent him money, but at all times in all ways Paul was zealous for the glory of God alone.
TODAY ALONG THE WAY
Memorizing Scripture is a wonderful spiritual habit and discipline. But it is also a challenge for many people—some who believe in its value and try their best just can't seem to get the words to stay in their heads! Even if this is the case for you, we encourage you to try to memorize the first four verses of today's Bible passage (vv. 10-13). Ask the Lord to assist you as you work on it. He's the Author—He'll be glad to help! Even if you find committing it to memory a challenge, the process of review will be a blessing.
YEAP!! as much as possible..GLORY!

That I May Know Him

"That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death" (Philippians 3:10).

Paul deeply desired to know Christ in an intimate fashion--to experience an even deeper relationship. In our text, he lists three things which will also be known if we know Christ:

The power of His resurrection: The victory of Christ over sin and death exhibited His great power. Paul not only longed for an ultimate resurrected body, "If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead" (v.11), but he longed for the power over sin as well "to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:11).

The fellowship of His sufferings: Paul's desire to know Christ was so great he was willing, if need be, to suffer as He suffered. And, indeed, Paul did suffer in many ways (as seen in II Corinthians 11:23-27 and elsewhere). "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps" (I Peter 2:21). "If so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together" (Romans 8:17).

Being made conformable to His death: Paul was willing to die as Christ died and soon did die a martyr's death, beheaded in a Roman prison. But that is not in view here. Rather, he wanted to be like Christ in His death, gaining complete victory over all sin. "For he that is dead is freed from sin" (Romans 6:7).

To know Christ in this way, to be conformed to Him as Paul desired, primarily demands developing the servant's heart and selfless humility that took Christ to the cross (Philippians 2:58) to make it possible for us to know Him.
