Students Barred from Fulfilling Service Requirement with Religious Activity

by Jim Brown
November 30, 2004

(AgapePress) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has adopted a policy that prohibits students from performing their required community service in a religious context. Students must complete 30 hours of volunteer work to graduate, but the new policy prevents them from using any religious activity to fulfill the requirement.

A university committee and the faculty senate at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire have approved the policy. Under its guidelines, UW students will no longer be allowed to teach in vacation Bible schools or churches, or in any way to conduct, recruit for, or preach religion in order to meet the terms of the 30-hour requirement.

Volunteer projects requiring religious membership would also be disqualified. The school's administrators claim they have adopted the new policy in the interest of maintaining the so-called "separation of church and state" mandated in the Establishment Clause of the Constitution of the United States.

However, Jay Anderson of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship says it is not unconstitutional for the school to recognize religious community service. "Students would be participating willingly of their own accord," he says. "No one's forcing them to choose a religious option for their service learning credit. And no one is forcing the participants in the vacation Bible school or the Sunday school class to participate."

According to Anderson, recognizing student volunteer service done in a religious context does not by any means violate the Establishment Clause. Since students are not forced to perform religious-based community service, he says the university would not be endorsing a specific religion by allowing such recognition.

What the UW-Eau Claire policy does do, the campus InterVarsity representative contends, is undermine the students' right to religious freedom by refusing to recognize their volunteer service in religious milieu. He feels the university officials are acting under a faulty interpretation of the U.S. Constitution and may be violating the First Amendment by implementing the restrictive policy.

"From my perspective it is an abridgement of our rights to freely express our religion," Anderson says. "I don't think that there's any sort of conspiracy or grand underground plan to keep InterVarsity and other group off campus, but I do think the people involved have a bias against religion and perhaps Christianity in particular."

According to Janesville's GazetteXtra.com, UW-Eau Claire senior Jesse Navara volunteered for Awana Clubs International, a Christian organization that conducts youth groups, and was given only partial credit toward his service-learning requirement because his activities included Bible lessons. Navara told the Gazette he was "disappointed" and feels the university's policy is a form of religious discrimination.

School District's Sex Ed Curriculum Ignore Parents' Values

by Jim Brown
November 30, 2004

(AgapePress) - A leading researcher of sexual orientation change says a Maryland school board should have learned some lessons from the 2004 presidential election.

The Montgomery County School Board in Maryland recently adopted new health education standards and a new curriculum that includes in-depth discussion of sexuality and gender identity, refers to same-sex parents as "kinds of families," and teaches that sexual orientation is not a choice. The sex ed program also promotes the idea of "safe sex" through resources such as a video that shows a teenage girl applying a condom to a cucumber.

Dr. Warren Throckmorton is a conservative columnist and also serves as director of college counseling at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. He says the Montgomery School Board's actions have led to moral outrage among parents, with many of the district's mothers and fathers objecting not only to the content of the school health program adopted by the board, but also to its advisory committee's rejection of a curriculum stressing abstinence.

Throckmorton says the parents are "feeling as though their schools are not a help to them in instilling the family values that they want to instill." Moreover, he points out, "they feel that they've been stonewalled in many cases as they've tried to bring these views to the school board."

Also, the researcher notes that this morally conservative reaction has been widespread, even in the mostly Democratic county of Montgomery, which voted 66 to 33 percent in favor of John Kerry in the recent national election. Some parents, upset over the board's disregard for their pro-family values, have even started a website titled, "RecallMontgomerySchoolBoard.com" to express their outrage and demand changes.

Clearly, Throckmorton says, issues of morality and sexuality cut across party lines. "Many parents who are upset about this are not necessarily Bush voters," he asserts. "They're upset about the school taking a very left, very liberal orientation to presenting sexual information to their kids."

The counselor and columnist believes the majority of the parents, regardless of their politics, tend to have conservative values when it comes to child-rearing and family issues. And, he adds, "Most parents don't want the schools telling their kids how to use a condom."

What the school board members failed to realize, Throckmorton says, is that even parents in an overwhelmingly Democratic area still want schools to teach the moral values they teach at home. He thinks the Maryland school board members will likely come to regret their decision to ignore the "values voters" in their midst who strongly oppose the district's new health education standards.

It is not a matter of refusing to question but rather not having the need to question for that question has already been answered when you have Jesus.

AMEN BROTHER!!

I've had Jesus in my heart for over 50 years, and that is my biggest joy and peace.

My only questions involve me, not JESUS. As unworthy as I am,:

why did Jesus love me enough to die for me?

why did Jesus offer Himself to me as Lord and Saviour?

why did Jesus rescue me from the curse of sin and death?

why does Jesus live in me and allow me to live in Him?

AND - I know the answer to the last questions:

What did I do to deserve being adopted as a child of God and given an inheritance with the saints in Glory?

What did I do to deserve spending eternity with Jesus?

Answer: NOTHING! - JESUS PAID IT ALL!!

Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable GIFT, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour Forever!

Love In Christ,
Tom

Brothers and Sisters,

This thread does not involve Salvation issues, and there is no hint of anything here but a Bible Study. As a result, I really don't care about agreement or disagreement. Most, if not all, of the folks involved in this thread do their own independent Bible Studies, even when the material comes from their own pastor.

I would simply like to thank everyone for some fascinating additions to my own personal Bible Study. Just about everyone who studies Bible Prophecy has varying opinions, primarily because it is difficult material to study, even for mature Christians. This is one reason why many Christians don't study Bible Prophecy. It involves a lot of work on your own, prayer, and the knowledge that PROBABLY no two Christians agree completely, including Bible scholars. I'm not a Bible scholar, but I do enjoy the study of Bible Prophecy. It's in the Bible for a purpose, and that purpose causes the exploration of just about the entire Bible if one really wants to study.

2nd Timothy and Dreamweaver, I really do want to study and I appreciate all the work you have done in this thread and others on the topic of Bible prophecy. I'm really enjoying the study of several books of the Holy Bible and hope to contribute something to these threads soon. In the meantime, please accept my sincere thanks for all of the work you are doing.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Thanks Brother! I'm going to guess that I don't have the settings right for windows media player. I do have the latest version, but it only opens automatically on midi.

By the way, I love to hear and see "Resting in the Lord's Arms." That's REAL joy, peace, and safety - something this world can't offer.

Wow Ive been away for a while and this site has really grown in numbers ! Good ones and bad ones!  Remember when the net was cast into the sea , and the angels sort out the good from the bad? I guess its just the way it is ,often in this life a mixed bag!

WELCOME BACK!!

We have an ever growing number of sweet Christians here, and I give thanks for their posts that honor God. I'm positive that is the reason why the devil attacks us so often. Maybe we should just consider it a matter of joy when the devil attacks and know that God is pleased with so many sweet Christians who stand and keep standing for our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

If the devil doesn't attack us, we should all be worried and wonder if we are yielding to God's Will.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Your friend raises a good point with the example of Hindus - it's all relative. Remember, the romans, as they were throwing Christians to the lions, were yelling "Death to the atheists!"

The question you should be asking yourself really is more along the lines of: why is/are my god(s) true and all the other gods false?

Cosmo,

Those are questions for the lost, and we were all lost at one point in our lives. When your heart is filled with JESUS, there is no question any longer.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Psalms 100:1-5  Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Howdy Silver Surfer, I do not keep the Sabbath as it was kept under the Law of Moses,
Ah, but the 7th day Sabbath commandment is not in the Law of Moses.

It is the 4th commandment, that God himself wrote out, with his very own finger, (Exodus 20:8-11......31:18).

The sabbaths that were in the Law of Moses, were the ceremonial sabbaths, such as the Passover....the Feasts of Trumpets...the Feasts of Unleaven Bread, etc...etc., which were abolished, at the cross of Jesus.

Silver Surfer,

You now have over 100 posts, and you have used nearly all of those posts to say the same thing over and over again. Your one and only note that you play is off-key and is no more true at post 100 than it was in post 1. I think that you play this one note because you are brain-washed with Ellen G. White doctrine, but nobody else is even listening to your one note. Your one sour note that you play is being heard only by you.

You have been given sound doctrine, but you ignored it. You need to learn about Jesus, what HE did, why HE did it, and what changed because of HIS perfect sacrifice on the Cross for us.

Born Again believers with Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour rest in HIM 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Jesus Christ is our Sabbath, we live in HIM, and HE lives in us. We don't need an appointment to worship HIM or pray. Our fellowship with JESUS is NOT 1 hour or 1 day each week. Jesus Christ is LORD over all days and all hours. HE is LORD over HIS children every second of every day.

Learn about JESUS. Only JESUS can set you free from the curse of sin and death. You will remain in misery until you allow JESUS to set you free.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Pat,

Sister, again I offer my thanks for some beautiful music. The piano arrangement for Battle Hymn of the Republic was beautiful.

I still haven't figured out how to listen to ".mp3" and ".mpga" automatically, but I can download them and play them later. Maybe I still don't have something set right in the Firefox plug-ins. Regardless, I download them to my music directory and can still listen to them.

Maybe a Firefox guru can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Brother Bob, have you figured this out yet?

Love In Christ,
Tom
