Yup.... that's what I was going to guess, too...
2  Theology / Debate / Re:Public Education on: May 21, 2004, 06:22:59 PM
Do you know what's staggering to me, Symphany? I read a statistic that stated 80% of Federal employees children attended:

homeschool or private school
academically. What does it say when the government wants private or homeschool/tutors? Sure, there's security reasons, I'm sure... but it IS a thought, is it not?

Anyway... I teach Junior church, I'm the church pianist, the church clerk, and the janitor (for the time being!) LOL  Cheesy But that's alright! I ENJOY the "time" I give to the Lord!

4  Prayer / Prayer Requests / Please pray for me. on: May 21, 2004, 03:05:55 PM
I'm 37 years old and found out that I'm Insulin Resistant. I have one little girl who is 10.. but we would like to have more children... please pray that God would bring about His blessing and allow us more children. We've checked on adoption, but it is WAY out of our range... But God is a God of the Impossible... so pray that He can work a miracle.

Thank you ahead of time for praying!

5  Theology / Debate / Re:Seventh Day Adventists on: May 21, 2004, 03:03:43 PM
Huh As a Baptist we "worship God" on the "First" day of the week (as did the early churches after Christ's resurrection)... they met on the first day of the week.

Um... isn't the "Sabbath" old testament? I mean, in Hebrews it says that now we are under "Grace" not "The Law." If we have to live by the "old Testament" law then all our children that were unruly would be stoned! ROFL ROFL   Lips Sealed YIKES! There would be alot more "respectful" children if we all lived TOTALLY by the Old Testament Law... heck, for that matter everyone one of us would have broken the 10 Commandments by now... where would that leave us?

Anyway.. I'm not condemning the SDA's... not at all.. I'm sure they love the Lord.  I was just speaking my "thoughts" that's all!  Wink

ROFL!  Cheesy You're right, SincereHeart... I tell you what is VERY encouraging... there are other mothers in the neighborhood that see how advanced Sarah is in her school work (compared to the Public Education) that some are considering homeschooling this fall! One will be that I know of, for sure, so I'm thinking about heading up a " Homeschool support group" right here in our neighborhood. I'm excited about that!

Sarah (10 years old) is not what you would call a 'gifted' child... she hated to read until the end of her second grade year... by the time she was in third grade she was reading the "CS Lewis" books... she had problems with some words but she came to us when she need help.

Her Grandmother bought her a "Game Boy Advance" for the end of the school year. Thankfully, she's one to be more "outdoors" then on the game boy... but I didn't know if there are some "learning" games out there for the game boy.

We also bought a Spanish program last year (Sarah wants to learn spanish so she can talk to the Hispanic children that live about 18 miles away and tell them about Jesus)... so we are going to get started in that... we bought her some "jump start" programs for the computer which she has done so well on. I'm also looking at a program for Homeschoolers that will test their abilities and teach them through games. We limit her on the "computer" usage... but she enjoys the games... but now that school is officially "out" for her, she's more apt to be outdoors in the field or in the pool... ROFL

Thanks for the support!

Thanks for the "welcome" everyone! Nice to meet you all! I'm from Missouri... and yes, I homeschool and I LOVE it!

ROFL at Freetime!! ROFL!! OH... Free time!! That thing you have when you don't have to be a Pastor's wife and help counsel your people... run errands for the "preacher"... clean the church... homeschool your daughter... run a website and have visitation at your church every week!! OH YEAH.. that!!!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy  Well, Yes, I do get some free time... so I've decided to stop by here!!!

8  Theology / Debate / Re:Public Education on: May 21, 2004, 12:49:42 PM
Public, private, or home-schooled?

And out of curiosity, of all the kids that are home-schooled... how many, do you think, have parents that are even remotely qualified to teach high school-level courses? (Calculus, chemistry, physics, biology, English, foreign language, etc.)

I've got a bachelors in Secondary Education... and my husband has his Masters. We've homeschooled our 10 year old daughter, Sarah since Pre-K! She's two years ahead of the public school.
If you're wanting to get "Biblical" about this then just READ the Bible! It says "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." Do you ACTUALLY think a child will get the proper training in a Public Environment that will allow him to "not depart from it?" He'll get training alright... sure, the chemistry, biology, Calculus even physics... (worldly wisdom) but will it "train" him to live a godly, moral life?  Huh  I'm not all that great at Math myself... but when it comes time for Trig we'll get a tutor!

To me, people who spew out "No Social Interaction" "Not suitable teaching material" Blah blah blah... to me that is a cop out! It is our RIGHT as parents to "train our children".

I went to public school when I was younger... (quite a while ago) and even THEN there was garbage that I wish I'd never seen... my father is a Baptist Minister and he started a Christian School through our church and I LOVED IT! I excelled in my studies and far surpassed the Public School System requirements for graduation.

I've also had others say "You're sheltering your daughter... do you think she'll not SEE *bad* things later on in her life?"  Oh yeah... let's ALL live by THIS principle! DUH! We are "equipping" our daughter to FACE these obstacles later on... she is not strong enough to ward off the "firy darts of the devil" by herself right now... and we, as godly, Christian parents, should not EXPECT that! If you think I'm talking about the Cirriculum then you're SORELY mistaken... there are some GREAT teachers in Public School with great teaching abilities... it's the peer pressure and the worldliness she'd have to face. YES, she has to face that even in our neighborhood... but we can help "control" that.

If you think we are 'controlling' then so be it. But I've SEEN what the public school system has done to many young "Christian" children and we REFUSE to allow that to happen to Sarah.

For what it's worth... *Public Schools* were a "tradition of man" that started in Ancient Greece for "boys!"
Quote
ATHENS: In ancient Athens, the purpose of education was to produce citizens trained in the arts, to prepare citizens for both peace and war. Girls were not educated at school, but many learned to read and write at home, in the comfort of their courtyard. Until age 6 or 7, boys were taught at home by their mother or by a male slave. From age 6 to 14, they went to a neighborhood primary school or to a private school. Books were very expensive and rare, so subjects were read out-loud, and the boys had to memorize everything. To help them learn, they used writing tablets and rulers.

So, what is my "stand" about Public Education? Hmmmm... let's see...   Cheesy
Christian Education as in Christian Schools? I don't mind them... although I've seen SOME Christian Schools become glorified Public Schools.

For my husband and I, homeschooling is the BEST and most appropriate way to train our daughter... not just for the academics but for the Biblical training of raising "Godly seed" for His Glory.

I'm sure there ARE those who are not "appropriately trained" to teach their children at home... but I applaud and commend them for trying! We use School of Tomorrow Cirriculum and will start Saxon Math for Sarah's 5th grade year... and I'm QUITE pleased with the outcome!

I know enough to know that I've been a mom for 18 years and I'm no where near an expert. Different children learn at different rates. I know my children better than any teacher who has to deal with 20-30 of them at a time.

P.S. As a side note: I think it was the year before last that at the National Spelling Bee HOMESCHOOLERS won first and second place...  Wink Hmmmm.... interesting!
9  Theology / Debate / Re:Abortion Photos - effective or not? on: May 19, 2004, 12:54:07 AM
Very good response, His_Child.

We had a lady in the church (when I was a teenager... a long long time ago  Wink ) that had an abortion. At the time she wasn't a Christian... but she saw the pictures and things AFTER the deed was done.... she said she could hear babies crying at night. It scared her so bad. She came to church not long after ward and gave her life to Jesus... she's AVID against abortion now... and knows she'll see her little one in Heaven someday!

I second the motion about the "women groups" becoming so hostile about men.. however, a recent gallup poll stated that more women were seeing their rolls in the home MORE important than their careers. I thought this was a GOOD sign... especially in 80's when the womens movement seem impowered.

One point you brought up, though really made me think... for those men who want to just "sow their seed" everywhere... there's got to be a way to reach them. Women have abortions because they didn't want them... and apparently neither did the man. Sad  *shakes her head sadly* Doesn't make any sense to me... I WANTED alot of children and only had one... And there are those who are out there killing their babies when women like me would welcome one with open arms!

Good points, His_Child. Although, the graphic pictures sure do get me in the gut!

Wow!! Great ideas! Sarah loves "car games"... and she's definitely a "trivia" buff... we don't have any problems with her "Bible" time because she's around it constantly... but the trivia games in the car sounds like a great idea! We also finished the "Little House on the Prairie" series... and we live in Missouri so we could take her down to souther Missouri to Mansfield. (I think it's Mansfield!) LOL And she LOVES Branson with Silver Dollar City, so we may go there... lots of history there with the "Shepherd of the Hills" play and such. (Based on the book)

Thank you for those great ideas!

Thank you, His_Child.. I tend to be a bit "dramatic" sometimes... my 10 year old often keeps me that way! LOL

As I said, I must've missed the resurrection scene... however, I'm glad that this movie portrayed the "suffering" of Christ as it did... but even the movie doesn't do justice to what REALLY happened to our Lord. (And the movie was VERY graphic, I thought!)

As for hospitable? LOL... That's alright.. you've made up for it!  Wink

Now... *sighs* I'd like to see a movie of John the Baptist's life!  Grin With the "eating locust and wild honey"... now that would be interesting, don't you think?

My 10 year old daugher, Sarah, just finished school last week! YAY! We use the School of Tomorrow Cirriculum and LOVE it!

Anyway... does anyone have any suggestions for the summer months? I want her to have a break, of course, but I don't want her to forget... however, I don't want her to do her PACES over again because it would be so boring and, of course, that's what summer break is about.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to incorporate some of the concepts that she was taught without it seeming like a "drudgery?"

Thanks alot!

Did you not watch the end of the movie? Although it wasn't a very long scene, Christ was still risen. I think you need to watch it again.

I must not have caught it then, hard to do with a little one wanting to use the "restroom" every 15 minutes.

Christianity is a subset of Catholicism?

Let me rephrase this for you, m'kay?  Wink I was concerned that people were converted to "catholicism" rather than "to Christ" through movie... which, in turn, brought my statement about the only way to Heaven is through "Christ" NOT through a denomination.  Also, I didn't say I didn't like the movie, it was very touching and moving, but I must not have seen the ending that explained he had "risen."  Also, as far as I know, I thought Catholics believed that Christ was still on the cross... I mean, when you see Christ depicted it is always still on the cross or as a baby. (Crucifix, Mary and Jesus, etc) I was not coming on here to "bash" anyone, but apparently you were offended, ebia.

BTW.. thanks for the warm welcome.  Undecided

I have some comments to make about "The Passion of the Christ."

First, it was a very powerful drama and moving... and came the closest, that I've seen to date, of any movie reliving Christ's last hours on the earth... HOWEVER what was so alarming to me is that Christ wasn't "resurrected"... he was left "dead"... which is a Catholic viewpoint (with Mel being catholic himself)... Yes, I think the world should dwell on the fact of the pain and suffering that Jesus went through for us, but it doesn't end there.... if it did then we'd all be lost! He's alive, folks and He's coming again!  I'm not sure why Mel didn't add this tidbit of fact to the movie... I was told that Mel didn't want to "detract" from the seriousness of the movie by ending in a fairy tale way with "He lived happily ever after".... but let me just say... Because He lives.... I can live! So yes, there IS a "fairy tale" ending to this story. With all the conversions that were "made" during this film... how many were converted over to Christ or just to Catholicism in general.  Huh I hope that is not the case... it's not our "denomination" that gets us in to Heaven... it's our faith in God through Christ and asking Christ into our hearts that takes us to Heaven.
*breaths*  Whew... I just HAD to get that out!

With saying all that, I'm new here!  Wink
Hello everyone!
