91  Theology / General Theology / Re:Is smoking cigarettes a sin? on: July 07, 2004, 03:24:35 PM
I have a co-worker who really gets on my nerves. She gets on most everyone's nerves. Next time she opens her mouth I think I should smack her.

I don't think it's a sin and most of my co-workers wouldn't either. Therefore, it can't be a sin.

I've decided that housework is a sin, therefore I will not do it anymore.

Sorry Micheal- your analogy doesn't work very well.

If you REALLY feel that smacking someone is not a sin then it is not.  There is justified violence in the world - though I don't suspect your example qualifies because I think you are being sarcastic when you say that you think it would not be a sin to smack someone who gets on your nerves.  But say that person was someone you caught moleting a child then smacking them would be entirely justified and it would not be a sin because you might not feel it was not an offense to God (some still would not strike even in this situation but that is up to the person).  Your co-workers are not involved in this decision - it is how you see the act yourself not how others see it.  That is the whoel point to fulfilling the spirit of the law through love.  If you believe you are acting out of love for God and man then your act cannot be wrong even though it appears to violate the letter of the law, like when Jesus healed on the Sabbath.

I don't know if housework is a sin or not for you - I have never seen how badly you keep house ( ;Dducking and running for cover Grin)

Believe me, you don't wanna see my house.  Smiley

My co-workers would have a party if someone would put this annoying co-worker in her place.

As far as the child molester- it's different when defending or protecting someone.

Are these folks for real?

I should ask for a million bucks because if I ask I'll receive?
If I'm not a millionaire soon then it's because I don't have enough faith?

My health will be instantly healed if I just have enough faith.

If I have enough faith, at the age of 39 I can look like I'm 25 again---- or at least I can afford to buy enough make-up and big hair so that no one has a clue as to what I really look like.

Of course I'll get my money/health/desires of my heart quicker if I send of x amount of dollars to this ministry or to buy that book or series of tapes, etc.

Most of the people to teach these things come right off of the Total Bimbos and Nutcases station.

Does anyone really believe in these teachings?
Are they right about anything or have they convulted the whole Truth to fit their teachings?

94  Theology / General Theology / Re:To Be Baptised - True Meaning. on: July 07, 2004, 02:59:31 PM
I want to clarify something here.  I do believe we are suppose to baptize with water by the way.  My comments about John 3:5 are in no way trying to prove that baptism shouldn't be done in water.  To be honest I go back and forth with friends of mine for the Church of Christ and they look at John 3:5 and believe that the scripture is stating that unless you are baptized you will not enter the Kingdom of God.  Anyway, just wanted to clarify.   Grin

That is baptismal regeneration.
While I believe that baptism is important and should be done, it is not essential to Salvation.

I can understand how you would not necessarily believe that it is the cause of salvation, but it sure seems to be essential unless oyu can come up with another meaning for the word "except" in John 3:5.

If someone excepts Christ as their Lord and Saviour and suddenly dies before being able to be baptized will they go to Heaven?

HisChild, do you know what the "fruits of the SPIRIT" means? The fruits of the SPIRIT means that faith, love, forgiveness, patience, etc. come from the SPIRIT, not our glorious selves. Once the Holy Spirit enters us, NO ONE can snatch us out of HIS HAND because the Holy Spirit is stronger than the devil. Many don't believe that the Holy spirit is stronger than their own free will. They give credit for their salvation to their ABILITY to CHOOSE to believe. They haven't a clue that if God hardens our hearts, then WILD HORSES CANNOT make us believe, and if the Holy Spirit is in us, then NO ONE CAN SNATCH US OUT OF HIS HAND. That's whay Jesus said that we have to be born again of water and the spirit to enter the kingdom of heaven, because belief without the SPIRIT has not root. An excellent example is; how can you both know someone exists and NOT know it at the same time? Belief that comes from the SPIRIT is a knowledge that surpasses all human understanding because we have met Christ in the flesh through the Holy Spirit. That's why Jesus said; "Now this is eternal life; that you know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent." It is also why He said that those who call him "Lord" and do wonderful works, like prophesy, cast out demons in his name, and perform many miracles will NOT enter the kingdom of heaven because he never KNEW them. We must KNOW christ personally through the Holy Spirit for our belief to be real. And because the Holy Spirit in us NEVER goes away, NO ONE can snatch us out of His hand.

Yes I know what the fruits of the Spirit means.

I never realized that we could judge the hearts of man.

If your view is correct, then Christians do not sin. They can't because God wouldn't allow them to. After all, He takes away their free will.

How very Calvinistic of you.  Wink
97  Theology / General Theology / Re:Is smoking cigarettes a sin? on: July 07, 2004, 02:06:07 PM
Sin requires more than the act it requires intent to do something you know to be wrong.  If you did not think smoking was bad for you and you did not think it was against the instructions of our Lord Jesus Christ then it would not be sinful.  But it sounds as if you know both of these things so I would think it is a sin for you.

So something is only a sin if one thinks it's a sin?  Huh
Thats an interesting theology.

Hi Amanda-
I would encourage you to look at other churches and to read God's Word daily.
You are right on the baptismal issue. I'm sure there are threads addressing this issue.
I will pray for you.
You can reach me on aim as Hischild1994.

I'm still waiting for your answers to my questions. This doesn't only go for Heidi, but for the others that believe once-saved-always-saved as well. Obviously none of you think that those verses are wrong, so you must therefore have another explaination. I want to hear it and understand what you think.

"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect"

-waiting, Matt

Waitin' with ya!

I was an ex-smoker.  Cry
Now I'm a soon to be ex-smoker.  Wink
Maybe we could be stop smoking buddies?  Smiley
Smoking is a sin and I like Heidi's comparision to gluttony.

I wonder what kind of friends you are hanging out with who would make you think that you are going to hell for smoking?
It sounds a lot to me like the WOF or name it and claim it crowd.

We don't get saved and suddenly have our sins disappear. If we did I would have been sin free for over a decade now.

I like the saying I once heard a preacher say on the topic of smoking:
Smoking won't send you to hell, it'll just make you smell like you've been there.  Wink
101  Theology / General Theology / Re:Losing salvation? on: July 07, 2004, 01:31:17 PM
What is done is that Jesus Christ made the supreme sacrifice for our sins by His death. He paid the price in FULL, once and for all.  It's over. Once we believe this, we are saved. Belief comes from the Holy Spirit, not from hoping and praying he did it, but from KNOWING it.

So what happens if you decide you no longer believe it or you no longer want the gift of Salvation?

She worked, too..... Wink

16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.

My husband started a new job about 2 weeks ago. The difference in him is night and day.

That's wonderful!  Cheesy

Yes, she did work.
However I took a job outside the home against my husband's wishes.
If it were up to him, we'd be collecting welfare.
He saw nothing against two able bodied adults collecting welfare.
I wanted to teach our children a better work ethic than that.
My husband hates the idea of me working outside the home, but he now sees how it was necessary and is still necessary for me to hold down a job.
See, I was married once before and my ex-husband has custody of 2 of our 3 children. I have to pay child support to him.
My husband consistantly told me that he thought the children should be living with me and how he felt I got treated unfairly so he felt that I shouldn't have to pay the child support.
Now, I not only have to pay current child support, I have to pay back child support as well.
I got away from the victim mentality and found that I don't mind paying child support. They are my children and I love them dearly. I will give them every thing they need and some of the things they want.
I searched the Scriptures and did a lot of praying.
I kept coming back to the words of Jesus when He says to render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's.
My husband still doesn't agree with my decision to work, but he understands a little better why I am going to continue working until that debt is paid off.
It also really bothered me that my husband wasn't too concerned about the fact that not paying child support is a felony.
My husband would say that if it came down that I might go to jail, we'd find the best lawyers to get me out and the judge would see that I was being unfairly treated.
I totally support child support laws and I was being quite the hypocrit by thinking that they applied to everyone but me.
It will probably be necessary for me to hold down a job until I reach the age of retirement.
Like I said earlier, my husband still wants me to be the obedient wife and quit my job. However, he knows that will not happen anytime soon.
I have to be obedient to my husband. However, I have to be obedient to my Lord over my husband. If what my husband instructs is in conflict with what my Lord instructs, then I have to disobey my husband.
105  Theology / Debate / Re:Women in leadership roles.... on: July 06, 2004, 01:15:50 AM
Interesting that you should mention Proverbs 31.
When my husband was laid off from his job he suffered much depression.
He was the only one who couldn't see that he was sick.
He had no interest in finding another job.
He turned down jobs all the while telling me that the Lord would provide.
Against my husband's wishes, I went to work.
I prayed about it and felt it was the right thing to do. The Proverbs 31 woman kept coming to my mind. She sees what needs to be done and she does it.
During the time my husband was laid off he was not showing any interest in leading our family. I had to do that and I honestly feel the woman in Proverbs 31 would have done the same.

My husband started a new job about 2 weeks ago. The difference in him is night and day.
He is not at all fond of his new job, but he feels much better about himself and he is able to lead our family better.

When he was suffering, he couldn't do it so I had to.
