1  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Re:Routers on: December 18, 2005, 09:06:28 PM
Those routers are more for professional use. Home use routers can be obtained for less than $100.00. I got mine for $25.00.

The number of ports depend on how many computers you intend to hook up through it. If you only have one computer then save some money and get one with the fewest output ports. I went shopping at stores like Best Buy and Staples to find mine and did a comparison with what they had available.

Mine is a Motorola WR850G wireless.

The main purpose for a router is to set up networking. This means to have one primary computer with the others running off of it. The primary can control all the others. This is great if you have kids with computers of their own.

PR.............did go and check on the different routers (not the high end ones, though, 'cause I don't have that kind of money).  I liked the feedback on the Motorola, so that's what I bought.  Mine is the WR850GP. Don't know how you got yours for $25, 'cause I paid more than double that for mine. Could not find one that ended in just the "G".  It will be a couple of weeks before the broadband gets hooked up.  Meanwhile, as I checked on these routers, I also checked out some computers.  I'm not getting a new one any time soon, but checked nevertheless.  Gateway has one out that's a pentium D, dual core, 250GB, 1GB DDR with a 19" LCD monitor, cheap printer, BTX extra quiet tower and a bunch of software for $1249.00.  I was amazed at the speed for the price.  That isn't their top of the line, either.  They have an even faster one (380GB, I think) with double the 512 RAM.  I don't need any of that right now as I don't even know how to run the one I have. hehe  It's really interesting what's available and what one can do with a computer though..............blows my mind.  Right now, I just want one that won't give me any more trouble, like having to wait 5 minutes for Bronzesnake's Christmas card to download.  What a waste of time.  I know it isn't my computer that causes that, but rather this agonizing dial-up.

Keeping all of your family in my prayers.  The contractions must not have started back up or you would have updated.  That's good.  Your daughter-in-law and grandbabies are in God's care....................He's takin' good care of them.  Everything will work out well.  It's just getting over the unexpected that causes the stress.  You take care of yourself, too.  That's an order. Wink

Both of those are very beautiful. Thank you brother and hope you and your family will hace a very merry Christmas.

Thank you my brother, and a very merry Christmas to you and your family also!

I'm thinking I might be up to revamping the web site - is that ok with you my friend?

Cris...

Thank you also my sister. There are only two pictures on the first link. I posted a second link for those of us who live in warmer climates, and there's only one picture there.

Merry Christmas to you and your family my sister!

Here's that link..

Sister?  Sister?   You call me sister!   Are you sure Bronze?  Are you really sure Bronze? hehe   Bet you've been talkin' to PR.

Anywho, when I downloaded, there were 3 blocks, small one on top, huge one in the middle, and a small one on the bottom.  Two of them finally downloaded but the third remained blank.  That's why I thought there were three.  I did look at the other one also.................3 baby swans and the Mama swan.  That was lovely, too.  Serene, ah, so serene!

Your posts sound so good.  You sound like you're full of energy and just rarin' ta go. That's absolutely wonderful, Bronze.

My best wishes for a VERY Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Hey Bronze,

It's really good to hear from you and to hear that you're feeling a bit better.

Went to your Christmas card site.  My computer would only download 2 of your pictures.  Small one up top and the big one in the middle.  They're beautiful...............oh, so peaceful with the rippling water and then the falling snow.  I went right in mentally.  Loved it.  Thank you!

Those people waiting on the porch are us here at CU.  All of us, just waiting to welcome you back home. Wink

4  Prayer / Prayer Requests / Re:Twins on: December 17, 2005, 03:23:57 PM
Thank you all for your prayers. The contractions have stopped so far. They are going to keep her in the hospital until at least Tuesday, in bed and off her feet. It may be longer depending on how she is doing. If she does get to go home it will be bed rest, no stair climbing, etc.

PR,

You're welcome.  I will continue praying for all of you.  Thanks for the update.  Thought about you first thing this morning.  You're probably pretty tired, too.............take care of yourself.

Grace and peace,
cris
5  Prayer / Prayer Requests / Re:Twins on: December 16, 2005, 04:47:32 PM
I have been at the hospital all day today.

My daughter-in-law (youngest son) is in the hospital starting into labor already. She is only 28 weeks and the babies are only 2 lbs 3 ozs right now. They stopped the labor before it went to far and are planning to keep her in the hospital for at least the next week. She was a whole whopping 95 lbs when she got pregnant and doesn't weigh much more now (maybe 125??). Her size, first pregnancy and plus there being twins has her in high risk so it is hard to tell what will happen.

Please pray for the well-being of the mother and twins.

PR,

You and your daughter-in-law and family are in my prayers, also.  I prayed immediately after reading your post.

Father, in the name of Your son Jesus Christ, send Your Holy Spirit to comfort all of them.  Send Your angels to them, Father, to protect and guide them.  Give Your wisdom to this woman's doctors, Father God.  Touch her and her babies right now Lord God, all in the name of Your son Jesus Christ. Amen.

Grace and peace,
cris

PS...............95 to 125 lbs. is fairly normal.  That's a weight gain of 30 lbs. total.  She should be ok on this front.  Even years ago, Docs never wanted a woman to gain more than that.

6  Prayer / General Discussion / Re:Honest Questions! on: December 16, 2005, 01:47:53 PM
I would also like to point out that not only does Bible not tell us to celebrate Christmas, but it also does not tell us the day Jesus was born, and it does not tell us that there were 3 wise men from the east, people just assume that there were because of the gold, frankinsence, and myrrh. It does mention however that they were astrologers! And they never did get to see Jesus in a manger, Jesus was already weaned, and living in a house.
WISE MEN

wiz'-men: In addition to the uses of "wise" specified in the article WISDOM, the adjective is employed occasionally as the technical description of men who are adepts in magic, divination, etc. (e.g. in Ge 41:8; Ex 7:11; Es 1:13; Da 2:27; 5:15). Naturally, however, in the ancient world the boundary between genuine knowledge and astrology, etc., was exceedingly vague, and it was never denied that real knowledge could be gained along lines that we know to be futile. So the initiation of Moses into all the wisdom of the Egyptians (Ac 7:22) or of Daniel into all the learning of the Chaldeans (Da 1:4) met with no disapproval. These great men could be trusted to avoid the moral and religious pitfalls of such pursuits. For the ordinary Israelites, however the uncompromising prohibition of idolatry closed the door definitely to all studies of this kind. See ASTROLOGY; DIVINATION, etc. And for the Wise-men of Mt 2:1-23 see MAGI, STAR OF.

Burton Scott Eastonving in a house.

Mt 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. {presented: or, offered}
Ps 72:10; Isa 60:6
not a babe wrapped in a manger, but a young child in a house with Mary his mother, it doesn't even say Joseph was present. I don't mean to sound like a grinch, I just read the Bible and study it. I do give my children gifts, but then again I do this at any time of the year, not just on Christmas day. I I give God the glory.

I had always known the wise men to be astronomers not astrologers.  There's a difference.

All the rest you posted I'm well aware of.

7  Prayer / General Discussion / Re:Honest Questions! on: December 16, 2005, 01:37:05 PM
cris,
I have done a lot of research on this subject, this is why I don't do the santa claus thing. Why would I want to honor someone on the day that Christians have set aside to honor God for His gift to us. I am also aware that birthdays are not mentioned with good consequences in the Bible (each time a birthday is mentioned in the Bible it is related to something evil, ie. Herod's) in fact Jesus never told us to celebrate any days except to keep in rememberance His death and resurrection. It also does not tell us to celebrate anniversaries, etc. but keep in mind that we are not to put anything above GOD, therefore children are thought to fear, honor, love, and put faith in a human creature just like the rest of us. A lie is a lie regardless of how big or small, it is still a lie. And the Bible says that the the devil is the father of all lies. Just because a person did some good in the past does not mean he should be honored year after year for eternity. There are many, many more people in the past and present who have done as much or more yet they are still not to be honored. As I said I don't feel comfortable lying and saying to my children that there is a Santa Claus, I much rather tell them GOD has provided me with the finances to buy you these gifts because I love you, and I want to give you these gifts. Just as God gave His Son for us. In my Church a Faith Christian Church we do not promote Santa Claus. And we in no way compare to Jehovah's Witnesses, we believe in God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost, which make up the Holy Trinity. We believe that Jesus is God that He came to save us from our sins, and that there is a heaven and a hell, we believe in the rapture (unlike Jehovah's Witnesses). You probably base your faith the same way. We just don't promote Santa Claus, just as much as we son't promote holloween, or the easter bunny.

I understood your stance from your first post, air.  We all come to different convictions and have to remain true to those.  I can't tell you that you're correct or incorrect.........no one can do that.

Grace and peace,
cris

8  Prayer / General Discussion / Re:Honest Questions! on: December 16, 2005, 12:57:27 PM
Air,

The celebration of Christmas is not in the bible.  The celebration of birthdays is not in the bible, either.  This is one of the reasons the Jehovah Witnesses do not celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Sinter Klaus came about because of St. Nicholas.  Go back a little further in your research.  You'll find it.

Yes, Santa Claus could take away from the meaning of our celebration of the birth of Christ if we aren't careful.  As Christians, we're aware of this, and teach our children otherwise, even if they believe in Santa. Wink

cris

9  Prayer / General Discussion / Re:Honest Questions! on: December 15, 2005, 08:49:37 PM
Before you read my questions please realize that it is honest, and therefore reply with honesty. thats all i ask...and before you go nuts delting this thread, or "editing" it, step back and think if you felt offended because i really did offend you or simply because you felt convicted.

QUESTION:

If Jesus is the reason for the season Why do Christians lie to their children about santa claus, on the exact same day they are suppose to be celebrating the birth of their savior? did Jesus die so christians can make up lies about Santa claus ?

Isnt it sinning against God and all what He represents, to lie to children ...that are pure and innocent? and by lying to children about Santa claus are christina parenst the ones that first teach their children how to lie ?

Thank you

Then I would think we should not read nursery rhymes to our children nor allow them to read fiction, as both of these cause a child to form images in their head of things that aren't real.

Personally, I'd like to know just how many people who were brought up to believe in Santa Claus are damaged.

Maybe one person believes it's a lie to tell their children there's a Santa, but another believes they're creating a harmless fantasy based on something that did happen long ago. His name was St. Nicholas and he delivered gifts to children on Christmas Eve.  Yes, he's long since departed this earth, but the legend lives on still.  We call him Santa Claus.

10  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Re:Routers on: December 15, 2005, 08:18:52 PM

The REALLY high priced routers, $3000.00 range and up take care of everything, trojans, worms, etc. and even heal them before they can get to ones computer.

One can set up VPN (virtual private network) tunnels which allow outside computers to access ones system over the internet.  Example, I work for a company and have an office in a certain state, and need to access the server in another state.

These routers are usually installed in very large companies to offer the best of the best.  The set up takes a certified Cisco tech to configure them at $100.00 + an hour.

Now that you guys answered all my questions about routers, I'm well informed.  Thanks! Grin

Just thought I'd post this info in case anyone else never thought to ask the question that they didn't know they needed an answer to. Wink Tongue Grin Grin Grin

Yep, I know!  My question was, "what is the difference between a $50.00 router and a $400.00 router."  I already know there's a port difference, plus business vs home use, but there's very definitely a $300.00 price difference, too, which usually means a difference in quality, etc. I'd like to know what that difference is, but haven't been able to find the answer on the internet.  Thought maybe someone here might be into hardware and would know.  Cisco charges for that information via telephone.  That will be my last resort.

12  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Routers on: December 15, 2005, 02:21:05 PM

What's the difference in routers, besides the number of ports?
They're priced anywhere from $50.00 on up into the thousands of dollars.  Obviously, the higher priced ones are for big businesses, but they even have very high priced ones for VERY small businesses, too, with maybe only 3 computers to hook up.  I want one that will give me the max security with the min. of trouble in ALL areas. Grin

I did some research on these and it left me totally confused.  One brand might have 10 models, etc.  Some people like linksys and others dislike it.  Not many people are buying the higher priced ones, ie. Cisco.  Cisco's are mainly for businesses but what's in them (besides ports) that make them so much better?  The least expensive Cisco router I found was about $365.00.............OUCH!  Then there's something called "firmware" that goes along with the routers............WOW, it's really complicated for me.  Firmware must be updated on a regular basis, too.

13  Entertainment / Computer Hardware and Software / Re:Sygate......Symantec on: December 15, 2005, 02:07:57 PM
Aww that's bad news that Symantec has bought out Sygate. I like my sygate rather than Norton. I don't even use Symantec any longer cause personally, I think their firewall isn't the top of the line. They try to incorporate too many things into one and we all know that when you try to do that the caliber of a product goes way down. Both of you are running a better computer than I have...lol. I have a 1.6 ghz processor, 512 shared DIMM RAM and a 40 GB hard drive. So i'm running a little slow. There are however some memory tweaks that you can do if you have 512 or better that will take out that blue taskbar and clear type and all that good jive. Nortel routers are pretty good, and of course Cisco routers are pretty good, but they cost a pretty penny. These little linksys routers are so hackable...and yes, I said hack. LOL. You pretty much have to hack them in order to customize them and safeguard them to a bit of an extent. ZoneAlarm does decent as far as firewalls are concerned. I still stick with my combination of Sygate and PeerGuardian. Since i'm on dial up I don't have much going right now causei'm at home. I'll put it this way, when it concerns a.v. software and firewalls...levels of protection is something that is essential. Now if you're running a Mac, you don't need as many levels of protection. So needless to say, layers of protection is a must for windows users. Just a few thoughts.

Joshua

Jemidon,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad new for ya.  Well, at least you know ahead of time what's going on and can plan for another firewall in the interim................that's GOOD news. Wink

Now, are you saying the router keeps other people in the same household from accessing the computer I use, or are you talking about others outside the household?

The router prevents both, other computers in the household as well as those without from accessing your computer. Yes, you should have a software firewall in addition to the router for better protection. I just use the standard windows firewall.

Oh, your "new" computer is a little bit more powerful than mine.  I have the 80GB hard drive but not your ATA/100 and I have 2.0 GHz compared to your 2.40 GHz. I have 512 RAM memory to your 256 RAM.  Actually, I don't have the slightest idea of what this all means, with the exception that your computer is a little faster.  How much difference this is going to make with broadband, I don't know.

The difference probably would not be noticeable unless you are doing a whole lot on your computer in addition to the internet all at the same time.

I use a lot of graphic intensive programs that take up a lot of memory at the same time I'm on the net so I noticed the difference when I upgraded.

Thank you, PR! Smiley

The only way to know if you have a good server or not is through experience with them. How reliable they are? Are there a lot of down times, etc? I use one through the local TV cable company and have had very good service with them.

I have a router made by Motorola. A router is actually a device that allows more than one computer to be hooked up to one broadband connection at the same time. I nice side benefit to some of them is the ability to prevent others from accessing your computer  ......  a hardware block of sorts.

I would have the firewall set up and ready to go when the broadband is hooked up. The changes made on your computer will not cause you to loose anything in your computer such as favorites or other internet settings except the dialup settings.

OK...............we have two local cable TV companies in our area, too.  I chose one over the other because they're probably fairly equal.............I really don't know.  I'll find out though, won't I?  It's going to be several weeks before this gets connected.

The router...............they're supposed to have a firewall built into them.................did you know this?  It doesn't mean it's enough from what I've heard, though.  One still should have something like Z.A., too.

Now, are you saying the router keeps other people in the same household from accessing the computer I use, or are you talking about others outside the household?
