Post by: WalterRomans10:13 on May 17, 2005, 09:33:17 PM
Does anyone know of free Bibe study software.  I tried e-sword, but it never loads properly, and i tried bible database, but I don't like it as a studty tool.  So if anyone knows something out there let me know, or if anyone knows how to fix my problem with e-sword let me know?

I think you will be hard pressed to even buy a better Bible software than e-sword.   Have you installed the updates after installing the main program?

Grace and Peace!

Brother Walter,

I am a long-term user of e-Sword, and I love it. I've not ever had any kind of problems at all with it. If you don't mind, I'll wait a couple of days and move this thread to the computers and software area of the board. We do have several other discussions there about e-Sword.

Please tell us if you see any error messages or anything else you might see when you try to load e-Sword. It would also be helpful if you would mention your operating system, virus program, firewall, etc. Security features on some systems prevent software installations of some type. If I remember correctly, e-Sword uses Visual Basic, and it depends on scripts for proper installation. Firewall and virus program settings might prevent scripts from running. I might also mention that Microsoft XP, especially Service Pack 2 is famous for causing problems while installing software. For that reason, I have the Microsoft Firewall turned completely off. When I install software, I must turn off some of my security features in Norton, etc. Script-blocking must be disabled.

Please try turning off everything running, including security, and try a clean install of e-Sword. Reboot before trying to run e-Sword for the first time and be prepared to make notes of any error messages. Get back with us and tell us what happened. Maybe we can help you figure this out.

Love in Christ,
Tom

As of now, It says error loading kjv \_bible, and then a error box for each of the addons I installed, just saying coldn't load.  After all that the main progrm loads and thats it nothing in it.  I have xp, sp2 installed, and norton anti virus software.  I installed main program but never installed the udate....Figured I didn't need it.  I will try shutting down all my security features and do the install like you said...I will let you know tomarrow what happened...Where is this thread going to be?

Walter

Brother Walter,

I'll move the thread under "Entertainment - Computer Hardware and Software".

It sure does sound like your security is stopping the installation of the program. Please make sure that you disable script-blocking in Norton. Norton is excellent in protecting you from many things, but it does many times stop you from installing programs that use install scripts.

You are most welcome to link to my site, and I will link to your site the first chance I get. Please feel more than welcome to use any or all of my Bible graphics. If you need something special, let me know and I'll be happy to help. This is something small that I love doing for the Lord. I do many kinds of buttons and banners for Christian Web Masters. I'm a little bit slow, but I only have 1 person left on my list to make graphics for right now. Just send me a private mail and give me an idea about what you need.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Brother Walter,

Please try this:

Go to the control panel to Microsoft Firewall and make sure it is turned OFF.

Go into the configuration options for Norton, and do the following:

Turn off auto-protect at Windows start
Turn off script blocking

Reboot the computer, and you should see (x's) over Norton Security in the bottom try - indicating they are off. Leave them off.

Now, turn off all other programs that are running - everything.

Now, do the install for e-Sword - just the install, and don't turn e-Sword on yet.

Reboot the computer.

Now, turn on e-Sword.

I'm almost sure it will load and finish. e-Sword might work a few seconds finishing the registry entries and loading Bibles and other components. Just let it work several minutes before you try anything else.

Once everything is working, you can enable your security again and reboot one more time. I recommend that you leave Microsoft Firewall turned off. You might even have a conflict between the Microsoft Firewall and the Norton Firewall.

Try this and let me know.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Brother Tom,

I tried exactly what you said to do, but it still does not work.  i don't understand, I never have a probem like this.  It says it can't load kjv+.bb, and it can't load strongs numbers.  I don't get it.

Brother Walter,

I really don't know what else to suggest at this point. Maybe someone else has some ideas. I would be curious to know if you've had problems installing any other software.

I had those suggestions because of the trouble I had installing Service Pace 2 for XP Pro. That's the list of things I did that finally allowed me to install it. I also use Norton with script-blocking.

There isn't any ads or connection to ads in e-Sword, so I can't imagine anything like Ad-Aware for Spybot stopping the installation. BUT, I guess that anything is possible.

HELP! - anyone else have any ideas?

Love In Christ,
Tom

Going by what you say is happening..."e-sword will load, but none of the add-ons show up"....raises a few questions.

When you installed e-sword, did you change the install directory to one of your choosing, rather than the default install location e-sword wanted?    Look and see if e-sword is installed in

C:\Program Files\e-Sword

Look in the e-sword folder and see if you see the files e-Sword.exe AND kjv+.bbl in there.   If either of these files are missing, this would explain much.   I believe all the addon files have to be in the same directory as the program file to work right.   If either is missing, I'm guessing this is either because you chose a different location to install e-sword, or the addon installers are installing the bibles to the wrong folder expecting to find e-sword elsewhere.  Check and see first, as it might be something entirely different, but it could well be the files are not residing in the same folder causing this problem.

If all else fails, I would contact supportATe-sword.net (replace AT with @) and explain the trouble you are having.   I'm sure the author of the program is well aware of these sort of issues and might know right off the bat whats wrong.

Keep us informed of what you find out.

Grace and Peace!

I didn't change the directory, and I never downloaded any add ons yet.  It won't load KJV+.bbl, and the strongs numbers.  I don't know what else to do?
