Right, so this is where I scream in horror... ^_^
One of my friend's swears by Dell however... Just recently he won yet another desktop Dell computer from a programming competition, also 2 other people in his group won some as well. We had a LAN party recently and one of the people wanted to make his computer actually play games... which because it was a Dell means that it had very dodgy hardware.. no AGP on the motherboard and EVERYTHING was onboard *shudder*.

After buying a new motherboard and graphics card we thought we were set. however we needed to grind several screws and do a heap of other stuff to actually change the motherboard and put the GPU in. very annoying and after a couple hours we FINALLY got it working again -_-

Anyways.. the point of me letting you know this is that if you get a Dell... don't expect to be able to upgrade it very well... Be prepared to have to buy a full computer next time you want something better.

I'd prefer a custom-built job over any pre-built system though... Pre-built systems just never have a decent balance of what you need.

I was just joking around Ralf.  I understand where you are coming from though.  Alot of people prefer to build their PC's, but for the average pc'er I think the new dells will do the basic stuff most folks want.   I'm still running an old amd-k6 3D 500 mhz processor and its fine for what I use it for.

As far as out of the box systems, I think the new dells are probably the bang for your buck for the typical PC needs.  But I agree with you...if your looking for a gaming system, you might be better off building from the ground up.

The new ones are I guess... They have an approximate 3Ghz processor, 256MB Ram (usually ddr 336), 60GB HDD *shudder*, onboard graphics *shudder even more*, onboard audio, DVD + CDR burner combo drive. Which is all your basic user needs for word processing etc... however you wanna do any more than that and you are gonna need an upgrade to RAM and graphics card especially. My mate has both his pre-built dell systems as servers because without upgrading (which he can probably afford anyway >.<) they aren't useful for anything else.

You are running an old amd-k6 500Mhz CPU? You want a bit of lag don't ya ;). I don't like it when my computer takes longer than 5 seconds to go through POST and 10 seconds to load up windows.

Want 'sgot nothing to do with it!  LOL   I started pc'ing back in the days of the 8088 processors.  Al Gore had not even invented the internet yet  ::grin::    I remember getting my first 4 color video card!   :D  I was hi tech baby!   LOL

Seriously though, I would love to keep up with the Joe's on the hi speed pc block, but it just isn't necessary for me.  Probably the most taxing thing on my desktop PC is e-sword, or maybe bootup....lol  

I do have an inspiron 5150 laptop from dell that I use for GPS, wireless connectivity, and weather data aquisition.  I'm an avid storm chasser, but again that dell does exactly what I ask of it with room to spare.  Any gamming I do is on a PS2 which My son owns... ;D

ya well.. you pretty much have to spend maybe 3000AUD and you have a near top of the line computer that will last you and be decent for a while (being a few years :P) so it's all good... Still too tired to make a decent post but yeah.

I do know him... I grew up in a strongly christian upbringing.. church every sunday etc. also my dad went into the lutheran seminary just over 10 years ago to study for 5 years and he became a pastor.. right now though.. I'm kinda taking a bit of a break.. I just moved out of home and all those years of having it piled onto me every sunday just got too much and I'm relaxing in the idea that I believe him and thats enough.. I'm not very evangelistic. I respect other's beliefs and I do defend christianity as I don't see anything really wrong with it.. however I do disagree with a few things. But this isn't really the place to discuss this and I don't wish to start a flame war. the main reason I joined this forum is to help out on this board, giving advice for computers if people needed it.

I see.  Being a Christian board, I can think of no better place  to discuss God and the Bible however.   I have no interest in taking part of any flame wars either.   I don't think many here do.

If you want to discuss it I would be happy to go over some of your questions with you.   I promise I wont beat you over the head with the bible or anything  ;D   We can even do it via private messages if you like to avoid distractions.   :)

Edit: I've just checked my profile and configured it properly I think. One thing I forgot to mention about IMing me. Just in the last few days I got a new game called Warhammer 40,000 : Dawn of War. Very nice real time strategy game. But there's a competition for it coming up at the end of the month and my time spent online is rather sporadic as I'm popping in and out so I can practice.

Being as how I don't have all the latest greatest IMing technology, just fire me off an PM here at CU.  We can do it that way, and we can talk at your leasure.

monitor envy huh? Unless you got a 19" tft monitor with a response time of under 12ms with no blurring, no problems with different angles and it has to have a natural resolution of 1600x1200@75hz then I'll be jealous :P
As it is I have a 17" Flatscreen CRT made by LG.. quite a nice one. I would have preferred to get the model up but oh well.
