Ok, so I got this "new" old Gateway computer, with a Windows 2000 operating system, 200 mHz processor, and 32 meg RAM. It's original hard drive was only about 1.2 gigs, so I decided to take a 20 gig drive out of our broken computer and install it on this new one. We wired it up and turned on the computer, but it didn't read the new drive for some reason. Then we decided to just unplug the 20 gig drive altogether, and now when we turn on the computer, it doesn't read ANY drive.

Any ideas?

Ugggh!  That ain't much fun.  Not sure I can really help, but I'll give it a whirl.  What's your BIOS saying?  And what kind of BIOS do you have?

Older BIOSes will have difficulty with larger drives.  My P-II/350 had to have an install disk for the hard drive because the BIOS didn't recognize it.  Check the mfr's website for possible download or other info.  Hope that'll help some.

      Was the (new) harddrive Gateway if not that may be the problem, after buying my gatway I taked to a tec he said that gateway sys were propryitory(sp?) you have to use Gateway parts.

That's one reason I use custom shops instead of brand name systems.  I also use free software as opposed to proprietary software.  In my experience, anything proprietary locks you in.  hardware and software based on open standards, and that enable us to help others are the only way to go for our church!  ;)

Yeah...I'm finding that out. My own desktop is a custom, but we purchased an IBM Thinkpad factory loaded. It's got a dual head video card (ATI) but it won't let us load an updated ATI driver, hence I am unable to make our song software work on it.

Our church has a dell laptop, but custom loaded and the software works fine on it.

I think a wire must have been loose or something, because I took the drive out of the computer and plugged it back in, and Windows 2000 started up normally, Then, just for kicks, I plugged in the 20 gig hard drive and restarted the computer, and that was on there, too. So no more problems. Thanks for your help anyway, guys.

YIKES I am sorry  Sapphire That your computer didn't work for your new hard-drive.  :'(

I use a Dell Pentium IIII I installed a second hard-drive very easy.  My second hard-drive is the Slave to my main hard-drive.  I used to have only 40GB of hard drive space, I added a Western Digitial 160GB hard-drive as the Slave to my main on. Thus I now have 200GB of hard-drive space.

I have two CD/RWs and someday I'll buy a DVD/RW and install it. I have Bose Speakers and Altec-Lansing, Five speakers all together.  I run Windows XP Home Edition.

I wish I could help you  Sapphire, but, I don't understand Gateway's sorry!
