Title: Is anyone else offended by...
Post by: Saved_4ever on May 21, 2003, 02:41:31 AM
This new movie "Bruce Almighty"?  I don't know if you've heard of it yet or seen it but I think it's completely wrong.

It's about God(Morgan Freeman) wanting to take a day off so he lends his powers to Bob(Jim Carey) who of course does nothing but stupid things with his newfound powers.

I don't judge movie until after I see them. But it doesn't seem to be that offensive. No more offensive then say... disrupting the peace of the board by calling someone a pagan.

That satement is quite humerous at best.  If the truth causes disruption so be it.

Jim Carey, is a stupid actor in a stupid movie. I would rather watch Benny Hinn, and you know how much I like him.  ;D

God doesn't take this stuff lightly. God is very great and powerful, and we need to tread cautiously. We don't seem to realize this because of all the goodness He's given us! I'm worried about Mr. Carey, because I know God isn't pleased by the demeaning of His greatness. I don't think one could say this movie magnifies the name of the Lord. Everybody look at Carey in this movie and try to say with a straight face, "Now here is a man who is putting on the mind of Christ!" Okay, now everybody freeze your facial muscles and check: are you doing one of either laughing, smiling, or really frowning? If so, you likely agree that it is completely absurd or completely offensive to even consider that Carey is putting on the mind of Christ! I did see a television interview with Mr. Carey about the movie...

Ambassador, Benny Hinn! Hahahahaha! I know just what you mean!!!  :)

I'm typically suspicious of any of Hollywood's renderings of Jesus, God or His message to us.

Still, however, sometimes HIs wonderful truth somehow gets through.  I don't know about this movie.

But everywhere I look, in the liberal media, or whereever, I see God's truth getting through--in all of its variety--judgement, fruits, good works, persecution.

A recent editorial in The New Yorker was quoting scripture throughout.  Another article, just last week, laudatory of the King James version of the Bible.  These are from very liberal sources who at the same time would defend homosexuality, etc.

Seems God's majesty is being expressed forth in one final countdown--probably up to the very last minute when, all of a sudden, I imagine, it will be too late.

It's awful to comprehend.  So I don't know how this movie would stack up against that kind of reality.

The plot isn’t just that some loser is going to get God powers for the heck of it. From what I can gather, he is cynical guy who curses God for being such a bad God, and God gives him his powers for a week, to teach him a lesson. And of course, it works. It will not doubt be a Mask/groundhogs day style movie, were he is given a great power, screws around with it, then at the end learn a lesson.

This give an objective look at new movies and videos. It even gives list of the good lessons in it, and a list of the curse words used. It is a GREAT site. They don’t really rate the movie, mostly they just give the fact, how much drugs and violence is in it, how much sexuality is in it, where the Jump scenes are, etc. and it puts it in as easy to understand format, you can click on what yo want to know about the movie, takes you right to the part of the page talking about it. It even talked about the part of the movie where disrespect is displayed! It is great, I suggest you all give it a try, specially if you have kids and you want to see a movie with them! I haven't check Bruce Almightly yet, but go for it, see what they have to say about.

I think that even without seeing the movie, from the previews we as Christians should be able to tell that it is blasphemous. It is making fun of God's powers by have Jim Carry use them for things that are selfish and morally wrong.

If God were to watch it, what would he think?

I think that to an extent we can and need to judge movies before we watch them. If we watch them first, we already have the junk in our heads. The previews, reviews, plot of the movie, and sometimes even actors can say a lot.

God Bless!

Well, let me just say, I saw was dagged to it Friday, and this is a case where you are wrong, you are judging the movie incorrectly. Any movie where Jim Carey's Charactor asks forgivgeness and becomes saved at the end isn't at all a bad movie. It was quite good. As Jim Carey movies go, the cursing and crude humor took a back seat to getting the point across. Among the point are:

1. God sometimes DOESN'T answer pryers, hism not ours will be done
2. Respect for God
3. Power of Prayer
4. God can do anything, and fix any problem ,no matter who bad it is

These are all non-Cognitive points that are basically quoted in the movie, I did not even mention the many lesson to be learns when you think about it. Bruce Almighty was a VERY god movie, and a much better poster child for Christian movies then these end-times B-movies that keep coming out! It is worth a veiwing, guys, trust me.

yes, but the things that he uses the power of God for are just wrong! They aren't what God would do either. And, worst of all, he's doing selfish things. THAT'S the problem. It's good that he gets saved at the end. But the end does not justify the whole movie

The things he does that you've SEEN are wrong.

Okay,
You give me some things that he does good and honorable and not selfish with the power, and I'll check into it. 8)

Oh, it is good that he gets saved, but the moments that us acts human that cause deep introspection that could lead somebody to the lord isn’t a good part? He see what happens to him, and we see him get saves, we are glad for him, but by seeing the events that lead up to his salvation, we gain understanding as to WHY he made this choice. This may be the “WHY” that someone who is straddling the fence is looking for. They see what happens to him, they relate to him. We can’t go out, into the streets, and just tell people to get saved, we must explain WHY they need to get saved. People will understand his choice only if the see his life before salvation.

He does his power for his own good at first, and ignores the rest of his domain, but he soon finds that there is more to being God then pleasure, but begins to behave more upright. He finds that you don’t need gods powers to do good, he choose to “be his own miracle” as Morgan Freedom’s character, God, puts it. Miracle’s aren’t just waking on water, he says, every time a child chooses an education over drugs, THAT is a miracle. He fixes he damage without using the Powers of God gave him. After using his powers to cause his recently promoted Rival to loose his job, Bruce turns down the offer to take his place, and see that his rival is placed in the proper place. Earlier in the film, Bruce same something heartwarming and touching, when his rival was promoted, he quoted this, not saying Bruce was the author, and took all the credit for it, he mocked Bruce a every turn, and Bruce still did the right thing, and let him have his job back. So, I've told you one thing, you go and check into it!  ;D

On another note, why is it so ludicrous from someone to have these powers in the first place? Didn’t Jesus say that we will do great things they he has done? Do we not have dominion over the earth? Can we do ALL things thru Christ? No, we can’t answer prayers like Bruce, but when you look at it as biblical principle, is it not somewhat sound?

Maybe I sound oldfashioned, but, I believe any film in which a man portrays the Father of Creation, who also happens to be the God of The Universe, is in poor taste.
We must remember, God IS God.  I recall seeing a film where George Burns portrayed Father too.
Today, some films being put out are not in the interests of Christians.  We cannot take our Father in Heaven lightly.  And these films tend to do that.

Love..Tamara.

I don't offend easy, but I also don't like Jim Carrey. Despite this, I thought it was funny, that's about it. To me, there was no moral to the story or one that would make any impact on me or my life. The moral of the movie was pretty lame.
