IN BRIEF

Kamala Harris Exit Not Due to Race10

“The elephant in the room about my campaign,” Kamala Harris asserted back in October, is this question: “Is America ready for a woman and a woman of color to be president of the United States?” Well, it appears that even the party of the “woke” isn’t ready for a Harris presidency, as she announced on Tuesday that she is ending her presidential bid and returning full time to the Senate. While this news left many Democrats and Leftmedia pundits wringing their hands over the lack of “diversity” among the remaining leading Democrat presidential contenders, the truth is Harris’s failed campaign had nothing to do with her race. It had everything to do with Harris herself.

From the beginning of her run, Harris attempted to play up her minority “black” status by announcing her campaign on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with much fanfare. She brandished her “person of color” victimhood credentials when she attacked Joe Biden over his busing comments, but she was subsequently exposed by Tulsi Gabbard for her overzealous prosecutorial record as California’s attorney general. That didn’t play well with minorities.

While Harris’s talent as a prosecutor seemed to indicate she’d be a formidable candidate, it soon became apparent that she lacked the necessary managerial skills to run an effective campaign. As National Review noted, “Harris was also plagued with reports of campaign mismanagement that began to emerge after she announced dozens of layoffs in November. Many of the campaign staffers cited in the reports blamed campaign chair Maya Harris, the candidate’s sister, and campaign manager Juan Rodriguez, for a lack of clear direction.” Diversity of skin color does not equal competency. Merit remains the ultimate winnowing standard, and it’s color-blind. In fact, it was the foundation upon which MLK based his fight for equality.

The bottom line is that under the pressure of a presidential primary, Harris’s lack of leadership ability and consistent messaging were exposed. This is why her campaign ended. It had nothing to do with her being a person of color. Barack Obama’s election demonstrated this fact.

Exit question: Will Harris be considered as a possible running mate for the eventual Democrat candidate? It’s not beyond the realm of possibilities, especially given the threat of President Donald Trump’s growing popularity with black voters.

‘Schiff Show’ Roundup: Democrat Fiction11

House Intelligence Committee Democrats released their 300-page report12 on their impeachment inquisition so far. It’s riveting reading if you like works of fiction very loosely “based on a true story.” The far more accurate version is the Republican prebuttal13.

“President Trump’s scheme subverted U.S. foreign policy toward Ukraine and undermined our national security in favor of two politically motivated investigations that would help his presidential reelection campaign,” argue Adam Schiff and other House Democrats in their report. Moreover, they aim to bolster their case on “obstruction” by saying, “It would be hard to imagine a stronger or more complete case of obstruction than that demonstrated by the President since the inquiry began.”

Democrats proceed to base their gripes in their longstanding narrative that President Donald Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. They argue that his Ukraine endeavors were the same kind of corrupt conduct. “In making the decision to move forward, we were struck by the fact that the President’s misconduct was not an isolated occurrence, nor was it the product of a naïve president,” the preface to the report asserts. “Instead, the efforts to involve Ukraine in our 2020 presidential election were undertaken by a President who himself was elected in 2016 with the benefit of an unprecedented and sweeping campaign of election interference undertaken by Russia in his favor, and which the President welcomed and utilized.”

In conclusion, Democrats argue, “The president placed his own personal and political interests above the national interests of the United States, sought to undermine the integrity of the U.S. presidential election process, and endangered U.S. national security.”

Baloney. Trump’s only “real” sin is having defeated Hillary Clinton. The fact that he’d like to win again in 2020 is utterly unconscionable to Democrats.

As for “bribery”? George Washington University Law School professor Jonathan Turley is testifying14 today before the House Judiciary Committee, and he argues that the Democrats’ expansive definition of bribery is historically ignorant15 and mendacious.

In other news, Adam Schiff obtained Rudy Giuliani’s phone records, which include conversations with Devin Nunes, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, as well as journalist John Solomon and others. Clearly, Democrats hope to discredit Nunes with this revelation. Still, The Resurgent’s Erick Erickson puts it in perspective16: “I don’t find it outrageous at all that the Democrats got these records. It suggests a level of competence and thoroughness I did not think they possessed. [But] it is remarkable the Democrats have not been able to advance the ball and are flailing about given what all they had.”

Maybe Schiff’s phone records would reveal that it wasn’t just his staff colluding with the whistleblower17…

And finally, speaking of Nunes, he filed a $435 million defamation lawsuit against CNN Tuesday over its “demonstrably false hit piece” alleging that the congressman had traveled to Vienna in 2018, where he supposedly met former Ukrainian chief prosecutor Viktor Shokin in a bid to dig up dirt on Joe Biden. None of that is true. “CNN is the mother of fake news,” says the lawsuit. “It must be held accountable.”

OPINION IN BRIEF

Kay Coles James: “When tolerance for religious beliefs wanes, intolerance for other beliefs follows closely behind. Just as it has become acceptable to discriminate against people for their religious beliefs, we’ve seen how it has also become acceptable to discriminate against — and even attack — people based on their political beliefs, their beliefs on how they raise their children, or any other belief that doesn’t comport with the latest checkbox on the social justice warrior agenda. A pluralistic society like ours is defined by those with different beliefs and different cultures coexisting side-by-side while still sharing one unifying American identity. A society without that kind of tolerance becomes a society of us-versus-them that devolves into constant conflicts and chaos. Unfortunately, that seems to be the very path the far left wants to force us down.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “The state represents violence in a concentrated and organized form. The individual has a soul, but as the state is a soulless machine, it can never be weaned from violence to which it owes its very existence.” —Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948)

Friendly fire: “Today, I’m a little angry, I have to say, that we started with one of the most diverse fields in our history, giving people pride. And it’s a damn shame now that the only African-American woman in this race … is now no longer in it, and we’re spiraling towards a debate stage … that could have six people with no diversity whatsoever.” —Sen. Cory Booker

Bluster: “The evidence is overwhelming that [Trump] abused his office to leverage your taxpayer dollars to have a foreign government try to cheat an election.” —Rep. Eric Swalwell

Facts are stubborn things… “I think what we have produced in remarkable short order is so overwhelming that it ought to be presented to the Judiciary Committee now without any further delay. … There is, I think, grave risk to the country with waiting until we have every last fact when we already know enough about the president’s misconduct to make a responsible judgment.” —Rep. Adam Schiff

Race bait: “Anyone who supported this president is at best looking the other way on racism. At best.” —Pete Buttigieg

Tone deaf: “It’s f—ing upsetting that I can’t allow my son to listen to our President because our President is inappropriate, misogynistic and unpresidential. So unfair to parents.” —Alyssa Milano, who did not censor her own vulgar profanity

Hot air: “The fossil-fuel industry has damaged the whole globe, all of humanity, and nature.” —Jane Fonda

Alarmism: “Warmer temperatures wrought by climate change could put women at risk for giving birth early, according to new research.” —ABC News (So they’re trying to save babies now?)

And last… “Any black kid from the projects available to shout ‘how dare you’ about six times in front of the UN? Maybe then these virtue-signaling, good-for-nothing, leftist politicians and celebrities will jump to fix the neighborhoods that have been devastated by their policies.” —Candace Owens
