THE FOUNDATION

“It behooves you, therefore, to think and act for yourself and your people. The great principles of right and wrong are legible to every reader; to pursue them requires not the aid of many counselors.” —Thomas Jefferson (1775)

IN BRIEF

Leftmedia Torches Trump’s Favorability10

How effective has the mainstream media’s negative coverage of President Donald Trump been? Well, if a recent Morning Consult survey of more than 5,000 registered voters is to be believed, then the answer is “very effective.” According to Morning Consult, which has been taking state-by-state monthly polls of Trump’s net approval rating since he took office in January 2017, the president has seen an overall decline in the number of states that rate him favorably.

In January 2017, Trump enjoyed a positive net favorability rating in all but six states. Fast forward to June 2019 and the number of states where Trump holds an overall positive rating has shrunk to 21. This seemingly represents a dramatic shift in the wrong direction for Trump’s 2020 reelection hopes. And honestly, it seems somewhat mind-boggling considering just how successful Trump has been in implementing the agenda he campaigned to achieve.

Taken from a purely outcome-based perspective, Trump’s time in office has been amazingly successful11 — even more so given all the political resistance he has faced. He has implemented a deregulation crusade and pushed through a Republican tax cut that helped jump-start a near-stalled economy, as record-low unemployment and growing wages attest to. On the judicial front, Trump kept his promise to nominate constitutionally committed justices to both the Supreme Court and appellate courts. On foreign affairs, Trump’s unconventionality has proven to be highly intuitive and effective. He has stood up for the American worker against China’s abusive trade practices, has worked to ease tensions with North Korea, and has confronted Iran by pulling the U.S. out of Barack Obama’s disastrous nuclear agreement.

By most measurements Trump is getting positive results for all Americans, so why the bad poll numbers? Two facts have played against Trump — one of his own making, while the other has been the sole mission of the Left. Trump’s mouth is as much an asset as it is a liability. He can effectively communicate directly with his base in a manner that cuts past all the mainstream media spin, but this also opens him up to great criticism over his tendency to punch down and pick ugly fights. While Trump often correctly sees the big-picture problems, he too often gets caught up in swapping spit with jackasses. The MSM has used this to its advantage to portray him as childish, reckless, and untrustworthy. At the same time, Democrats and their Leftmedia cohorts have preached a nonstop narrative of Trump being a racist, bigoted, illegitimate president who only won the election because of Russian interference.

What this recent survey may indicate is that, irrespective of Trump’s actual record, the Democrat/MSM nonstop disinformation campaign against him is bearing fruit.

Dems Define Platform: Open Borders, Free Stuff12

Have Democrats forgotten that they were elected to represent Americans? Senator and presidential candidate Cory Booker (D-NJ) made an obvious attempt to grab some media attention when he ventured into Mexico in order to escort five migrant women seeking asylum back across the American border. Booker’s stunt was a clear effort to one-up his fellow “Spanish speaker” and presidential contender Beto O'Rourke, who had recently gone into Mexico to meet with migrants on the asylum waiting list. At this rate, the next Demo debate could take place at the front of a migrant caravan.

Speaking of O'Rourke, his replacement in the district he represented from 2013 to 2019, Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), has had her staff working to “exploit a loophole” in the U.S. asylum process. According to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials, Escobar’s staff has visited upwards of 6,000 migrants who were returned to Mexico to await their asylum claims. CBP officials say that Escobar’s staff has even instructed migrants to insist that they don’t speak Spanish in order to avoid being returned to Mexico.

Not all border efforts are equal, however. The Washington Free Beacon reports, “All seven Democrats in the Senate running for president were absent Wednesday for a vote to send $4.6 billion in emergency humanitarian relief to the southern border to help thousands of migrant families and unaccompanied children.” Evidently, voting on a bipartisan bill aimed at alleviating the pain of the border crisis didn’t provide the self-promoting political theater these Dems are after.

Considering the Democrats’ support of sanctuary cities, free health care for illegal aliens, and decriminalization of illegal border crossings, how can they claim that they are not advocating for open borders? In sum, the Democrat presidential candidates’ platform consists of basically three things: hatred of President Donald Trump, “free” stuff, and open borders. That’s particularly ironic, notes Mark Alexander: “Democrats were once the advocates of blue-collar workers, but they now support the greatest threat to labor and wage growth — the influx of millions of illegal aliens competing for those jobs and willing to take lower wages.”

TOP NEWS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MORE FREEBIES: The Daily Caller reports20: “Kamala Harris introduced a $100 billion plan Saturday to help black people buy homes. … The program would provide up to $25,000 in the form of grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help pay down payments or closing costs. The grants would help an estimated 4 million individuals or families who make up to $100,000, or $125,000, respectively, and are looking to rent or buy homes in high-cost areas.” The timing is certainly calculated, as Harris’s second-quarter fundraising was a relatively lackluster $12 million21.

UNCLE JOE’S MALARKEY: “Former Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday apologized for recent comments about working with segregationist senators in his early days in the U.S. Senate, saying he understands now his remarks could have been offensive to some,” the Associated Press22 informs us. Meanwhile, Fox News says23 that “Biden faced mockery Friday for claiming that Russia wouldn’t dare ‘undo’ elections on his watch.” Republican House Whip Steve Scalise retorted: “Russian interference in America’s elections happened on Obama and Biden’s watch. That’s irrefutable.”

A SIP OF SANITY: “A Starbucks employee in Tempe, Ariz. caused a national stir after being extraordinarily disrespectful to some police officers on Independence Day. … On Sunday, the company issued an apology … after meeting with Tempe Chief of Police Sylvia Moir. … It is refreshing — and a little surprising — to see them issue an emphatic apology in this case.” (PJ Media26)

WRONG CROWD: “Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein has been charged with sex trafficking underage girls in New York and Florida. … The new charges accused him of sex trafficking minors between 2002 and 2005 by paying them cash for massages and sexually abusing them in his New York apartment and his Palm Beach residence. … Epstein — who is friends with President Trump and former President Bill Clinton — avoided federal criminal charges in 2007 and 2008 after agreeing to a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to states charges of soliciting prostitution and served 13 months in a Florida county and registered as a sex offender.” (Fox News27)

OPINION IN BRIEF

Burt Prelutsky34: “Elizabeth Warren is now calling for reparations to be paid to homosexuals. At least unlike Cory Booker and Kamala Harris, Sen. Warren can’t be accused of trying to feather her own nest or, in her case, tepee. She is apparently heterosexual, so the worst that anyone can accuse her of is pandering to a segment of the population that is both politically active and has a lot of discretionary income at its disposal because they don’t have families to support. So far, the Democrats are calling for payments going to blacks, so-called Native Americans and homosexuals. I know it’s still early in the campaign, but I want to know one thing: Where’s mine? You think it’s easy being short, bald and elderly, even if I am cute as a button? My other question relates to Cory Booker. Do you think the 50-year-old bachelor will finally come out of the closet if he was sure he’d be able to collect two reparations and maybe even triple-dip if he could prove there had been a Cherokee in the woodpile?”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “A leader, once convinced a particular course of action is the right one, must have the determination to stick with it and be undaunted when the going gets rough.” —Ronald Reagan

Non Compos Mentis: “Look at what’s happening with Putin. While Putin is trying to undo our elections, he is undoing elections in Europe. Look at what’s happening in Hungary, look what’s happening in Poland, look what’s happening. You think that would happen on my watch or Barack’s watch? You can’t answer that, but I promise it wouldn’t have, and it didn’t.” —Joe Biden (Uh, it did.)

For the record: “I was prepared for them to come after me. But I wasn’t prepared for the person coming after me the way she came after me.” —Joe Biden

Acquiescing: “Was I wrong a few weeks ago? Yes, I was. I regret it, and I’m sorry for any of the pain of misconception that caused anybody.” —Joe Biden

Braying Jenny: “That day was very emotional and then to sit at that inauguration and to look around at a crowd that was not reflective of the country, and I had to sit in that audience as one of the handfuls of people of color, all that I had to hold on to over those last eight years, and it was a lot emotionally.” —Michelle Obama

Intraparty squabbles I: “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world. But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.” —House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the border-bill resistance from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley

Intraparty squabbles II: “That public ‘whatever’ is called public sentiment. And wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Intraparty squabbles III: “You know they’re just salty about WHO is wielding the power to shift ‘public sentiment’ these days… Sorry not sorry.” —Ilhan Omar

Intraparty squabbles IV: “It is very disappointing that the speaker would ever try to diminish our voices in so many ways.” —Rashida Tlaib

And last… “Isn’t it amazing how the left is okay with sending $1.5 billion to Iran and $500 million to Planned Parenthood but is offended and outraged to spend $2.5 million to celebrate America?” —Charlie Kirk
