IN BRIEF

Trump Salutes America, Triggering Leftists10

It wasn’t all about President Donald Trump, as many Leftmedia talkingheads bitterly alleged. Rather, Trump’s “Salute to America” Independence Day parade was a celebration of our country. In his speech, Trump highlighted our nation’s history as one founded and grounded in the defense of Liberty. “It is the epic tale of a great nation whose people have risked everything for what they know is right and what they know is true,” Trump declared. “It is the chronicle of brave citizens who never give up on the dream of a better and brighter future. And it is the saga of 13 separate colonies that united to form the most just and virtuous republic ever conceived. On this day, 243 years ago, our Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to declare independence and defend our God-given rights.”

Trump specifically noted the essential roll America’s military continues to play in both securing and maintaining our Liberty: “Today, just as it did 243 years ago, the future of American Freedom rests on the shoulders of men and women willing to defend it.” And far from being divisive, as so many on the Left contend, Trump’s message was one of unity as he declared, “As long as we stay true to our cause, as long as we remember our great history, as long as we never stop fighting for a better future, then there will be nothing that America cannot do. We will never forget that we are Americans and that the future belongs to us. We share one home, one heart, and we are all made by one Almighty God.”

But being a proud American today is a bridge too far for many Democrats11, who have capitulated to the leftist narrative that erroneously blames America for much of the world’s problems rather than recognizing the U.S. as the number-one proponent of Liberty and justice. And due to their Trump Derangement Syndrome, Democrats have fallen into expressing only antagonism toward the pro-America message.

Finally, U.S. Air Force veteran John Cooper, writing for The Daily Signal, summed it up well when he observed that the “‘Salute to America’ is about one thing: reminding our nation of those who stand vigilant in defense of our liberty. It’s about honoring those who have given, and continue to give, so much for our nation. And it’s about remembering why we can celebrate this day year after year.”

Dems Invite Illegals Into ‘Racist’ Country12

Democrat presidential candidates have plans to decriminalize crossing the border and “virtually eliminate immigration detention.” And, oh, by the way, illegals can access “free” health care13. “That is tantamount to declaring publicly that we have open borders. That is unworkable, unwise, and does not have the support of a majority of American people or the Congress. And if we had such a policy, instead of 100,000 apprehensions a month, it will be multiples of that.”

Those remarks weren’t commentary from the Democrats’ favorite immigration bogeyman, President Donald Trump. Those were the words of former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who worked for Barack Obama.

Johnson also slammed Democrats for politicizing “kids in cages.” He noted, “Chain-link barriers, partitions, fences, cages — whatever you want to call them — were not invented on January 2017.” The struggle for the Border Patrol, Johnson says, is timing and numbers. “During that 72-hour period” before illegals are transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services, “when you have something that is a multiple — like four times of what you’re accustomed to in the existing infrastructure — you’ve got to find places quickly to put kids.” In other words, Obama’s DHS “put kids in cages14,” too, because it’s the most humane way to deal with enforcing the law in the face of an invasion.

By the way, these children have become a smuggler’s dream, and a free pass across the border15 for others.

And yet we have Democrats like presidential hopeful Cory Booker proposing the elimination of detention while insisting, “Remember, this is a crisis that Donald Trump has created through executive action.”

Wrong. Democrats have invited this invasion16 for cynical political reasons. And then they utterly denied a border crisis until they decided it was more advantageous to blame Trump17.

Leftist judges are arguably doing even more harm. National Review reports, “U.S. District judge Marsha Pechman ruled Tuesday that the administration must allow asylum-seekers the opportunity to post bond and be released from detention while waiting for their claims to be adjudicated.”

The president’s new press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, got it exactly right: “The district court’s injunction is at war with the Rule of Law. The decision only incentivizes smugglers and traffickers, which will lead to the further overwhelming of our immigration system by illegal aliens. No single district judge has legitimate authority to impose his or her open-borders views on the country.”

Yet Pechman’s judicial activism is by no means an isolated incident. Since Trump took office, federal judges have issued an eye-popping 37 nationwide injunctions to block his policies. That’s 10 more than were issued in the entire 20th century.

So while Democrat politicians and judges create this crisis, it’s worth pondering a fundamental question: Why do so many people of color from so many countries governed by persons of color risk everything to come to America — a country that has been declared evil, racist, and run by “old white men”?

After we went to press Wednesday, President Donald Trump reversed his administration’s announcement on the census, and he declared that he would still pursue a question on citizenship. An update to that story is available here18.

TOP NEWS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

‘UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCE,’ OR ‘UNFORESEEN IRONY’? “Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton withdrew from the cybersecurity conference where she was scheduled to be the keynote speaker, citing an ‘unforeseen circumstance,’ according to an email from the FireEye Cyber Defense Summit. Clinton — who infamously transmitted classified information over a homemade server once housed in her bathroom — was [to be] the centerpiece of the October 9-10 summit in Washington.” (The Daily Caller26)

BINGE SPENDING: “Driven largely by the Defense Department, the federal government’s discretionary spending spiked to a seven-year high in fiscal 2018, with agencies obligating more than $554 billion for products and services, up $100 billion from 2015. … The government closed the 2018 fiscal year on a massive spending spree — due in part to funding increases after a delayed budget agreement — and early fiscal 2019 spending data indicates the government isn’t slowing down its contract spending.” (Nextgov27)

ADIOS! “Michigan Rep. Justin Amash announced his exit from the Republican Party in an op-ed he published Thursday in the Washington Post. … Amash’s split from the party comes after he faced intense criticism for becoming the first and only Republican to declare that Robert Mueller’s report into Russian interference in the 2016 election shows that ‘President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.’” (Washington Examiner28)

CENSUS SCRUTINY: “President Donald Trump is exploring using an executive order to move forward with the battle over the 2020 census question… While the White House may be discussing the potential of an executive order, it is not yet clear how much that will factor into the rationale the Department of Justice lawyers are preparing to bring before the Maryland district judge by the Friday deadline.” (ABC News29)

BORDER FUNDING, STRIKE 2: “A federal appeals court in San Francisco on Wednesday blocked President Trump’s plan to shift $2.5 billion from the military budget to erect a border wall, finding by a 2-1 vote that the administration violated federal law by diverting funds Congress had appropriated for other purposes.” (The Wall Street Journal30)

ENABLING THE LAWBREAKERS, PART I: “Presidential hopeful Cory Booker was in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, on Wednesday and traveled with asylum seekers as they crossed the U.S. southern border. … Booker helped five women make it to a U.S. shelter and not a detention center, according to Andrew Kimmel. Those women were originally sent back to Mexico under the Migrant Protection Protocols, and Booker told reporters Wednesday that his office intends on keeping in touch with them.” (Washington Examiner31)

ENABLING THE LAWBREAKERS, PART II: “Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday released a plan to address the increasing numbers of migrants crossing the southern border, calling among other things for decriminalizing illegal border crossings.” (National Review32)

ECONOMIC FIREWORKS: “Payroll growth rebounded sharply in June as the U.S. economy added 224,000 jobs, the best gain since January and running contrary to worries that both the employment picture and overall growth picture were beginning to weaken. The unemployment rate edged up to 3.7% as labor force participation rose, according to the Labor Department.” (CNBC33)

UNMASKING THE HOODLUMS34: “On Wednesday, in the wake of the violence that erupted in Portland last Saturday in which journalist Andy Ngo was assaulted by masked members of the far-left group Antifa, Police Chief Danielle Outlaw called for anti-mask laws, asserting, ‘We cannot allow people to continue to use the guise of free speech to commit a crime. A lot of people are emboldened because they know they can’t be identified.’” (The Daily Wire35)

OPINION IN BRIEF

Mona Charen40: “Schools with majority minority students aren’t bad schools because of the students (many charter schools are doing well); they’re bad because parents aren’t as involved as those in suburbs and because teachers unions make it difficult to offer choice. Many inner-city schools are also plagued by discipline problems and violence. Labeling suburban parents who don’t want their kids bused to these schools as racist is unjust. As always, the law of unintended consequences has the last word. Jeff Jacoby of The Boston Globe reminds us that in 1970, before Boston’s disastrous experiment with busing, 62,000 white students attended public schools. By 1994, only 11,000 did. The likelihood that a minority student would have white classmates declined sharply after busing, as ‘white flight’ increased de facto segregation. Busing was bad policy, but oh, yeah, it was also unpopular. Way to go, Democrats.”

SHORT CUTS

The BIG Lie: “We need to not only lean in but we need to work with our area partners to stop the root cause that’s pushing people to come to the northern border. Remember, this is a crisis that Donald Trump has created through executive action.” —Sen. Cory Booker

Braying Jenny: “We have rogue agencies that have no accountability, no transparency, in how they conduct their business. We know that they have spoken in the most vile ways about immigrants. We know that they have certain views about, you know, what brown and black people deserve. And so we should be having a conversation about eliminating their existence.” —Rep. Ilhan Omar

Village Idiots: “‘Criminal’ is my most requested song. In the past I have used my ‘Criminal’ money to help friends or family. However,. [sic] after months and months of reading the news about how my country is treating refugees, I’ve become gutted with frustration trying to figure out the best way to help. Of course you can donate money for the bare necessities … but after much searching I found the organization WhileTheyWait.org[.] It seems to me that the best way I can help detainees is to contribute to payment of their legal fees. … I have decided to pledge all of my earnings from ‘Criminal’ over this year and next to this organization.” —singer Fiona Apple

Non Compos Mentis: “It is on this Fourth of July and in this city that this president has decreed that a procession of combat tanks will line the capital, while the president speaks to the nation flanked by the country’s highest-ranking military chiefs. For the first time in the history of our democratic republic, we are being instructed to honor not the values of our Declaration of Independence but the power of the military and … the grandeur of Donald J. Trump’s personal self.” —MSNBC’s Chris Matthews

Braying Jackass: “Donald Trump is incapable of celebrating what makes America great — because he doesn’t get it. He cannot distinguish between our allies and our adversaries — because he does not grasp that America is the ‘march of the mind’ toward greater openness, greater understanding, greater human freedom to pursue lives of meaning and fulfillment.” —Joe Biden

Annals of the absurd: “I was glad to see [Nike capitulate]. And my hope is that they didn’t just do it to do it. They understand the significance there. And look, there are a lot of things in our history that are still very painful.” —Julian Castro

Belly laugh of the week: “Thank you [Nike] for doing the right thing. CA is open for business and welcomes those that represent the best of our American values.” —California Gov. Gavin Newsom

And last… “If you’re offended by a shoe celebrating the flag of the American Revolution, it’s a good indication that you may be better off living in a permanent safe space. Or Cuba.” —Rep. Dan Crenshaw
