IN BRIEF

A View of the Shutdown From the Border11

Thomas Gallatin

As the partial government shutdown enters its third week, there is still no immediate end in sight. In fact, if anything President Donald Trump upped the ante over the weekend by suggesting that he might use the military to build the wall after declaring the border situation a national emergency. Of course, if Trump were to attempt such an action it would be immediately challenged in the courts, and historical precedent in such cases does not favor the president. But we suspect that threat and his insistence that he’s willing for a shutdown to last for years are simply shots across the Democrat bow. Meanwhile, as both sides continue to dig in, some Americans are taking matters into their own hands, as in the case of Yellow National Park, where private businesses have banded together12 to keep the park open for the tourism their businesses depend upon.

As for the situation at the border in the midst of this shutdown, the best people to hear from are those actually dealing with the situation on the frontlines. Here’s a sampling of their perspective on why an actual physical wall is desperately needed:

Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, said, “I’ve been a Border Patrol agent for 21 years. I can personally tell you … that walls actually work. … If you interview Border Patrol agents, they will tell you that walls work. … They have been an absolute necessity for Border Patrol agents in securing the border. We need those physical barriers, and we appreciate President Trump and all of his efforts in getting us those physical barriers.”

Hector Garza, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council and a Border Patrol agent in Texas, argues, “We’re talking about murderers, rapists, [and] people that commit very serious crimes in this country. … These criminal aliens that have been released from jail [and] that have been deported will come right back into the United States. However, if we had a physical barrier, if we had a wall, we would be able to stop that. … We ask our congressmen to fund border security and fund the border wall.”

Finally, this assessment from Acting ICE Director Ronald Vitiello: “2,000 people are coming to the border each and every day. … Loopholes in the law [are] encouraging people to come to that border. … We are running out of resources and the status quo is not acceptable. [Democrats] are saying that a wall doesn’t work. Agents need an enduring capability to slow people down [at the border]. It provides an anchor for them to add technology, access roads, and patrol response to protect our border. We always have a safer border where we have that barrier. People who don’t believe it works — why do they have fences around their homes and lock their doors at night? … This is getting bottled up in politics. … I was in the Border Patrol for 33 years. … Walls work.”

What Patriotic Service Looks Like13

Nate Jackson

In the above photo, Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) (center) welcomes new “All American” wounded combat veterans — Rep. Jim Baird (R-IN) (left) and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) (right) — on their first day in the 116th U.S. Congress. “5 eyes. 5 arms. 4 legs. All American,” Mast said. Unlike most members of Congress, these men know the cost of their oaths “to support and defend” our Constitution and the price of serving our country.

Mast enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in May 2000, and he later served as an explosive ordnance disposal technician in Afghanistan. In September 2010, he was clearing a path for Army Rangers in Kandahar when he was severely wounded by an IED, leading to the amputation of a finger and both of his legs.

Baird served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. In March 1971, he was part of the 523rd Transportation Company, which was caught in a deadly ambush that cost him his left arm.

And Crenshaw, who’s already made a splash14 on the political scene with his winsome personality and capable rebuttal of leftist nonsense, served for a decade as a Navy SEAL, including three tours of duty. In 2012 in Afghanistan, Crenshaw was wounded by an IED that took his right eye and nearly the vision in his left. He deployed twice more after recovering.

All three men are recipients of Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, and other medals for their service. “I look at them and I do think they embody the American spirit,” Mast said of his new congressional friends. “I’m proud to be serving with the both of them.” Congress could use a few hundred more men and women like them.

FEATURED ANALYSIS

A Former 'Transgendered’ Man Tells the Truth35

Robin Smith

Just before Christmas, CNBC promoted via social media an “LBGTQ youth advocate” by featuring a video of a boy in a sequined outfit, a choker, loop earrings, lipstick, and eye makeup posing Liza Minnelli-like in a child’s play pit filled with multi-colored balls. The caption: “This 11-year-old drag kid is using his voice to encourage LGBTQ youth to be themselves.”

The exploitation of this child first occurred over the summer36, when his parents were heralded as “progressive” and the timeline of Desmond Napoles’s gender dysphoria was noted to have begun before he was old enough to have such issues. This truly despicable treatment of a child’s broken identify is just one example of the Leftmedia’s deliberate role as a partner in the degradation of humanity in the culture war. In fact, it’s child abuse37.

While media “journalists” scoff at the idea they’re propagating a narrative that gender-bending is just great, why is there so little coverage of the broken individuals who face regret for making “transitions” to their assumed gender?

Walt Heyer, who underwent gender-reassignment surgery from male to female and lived that way for a decade before having more surgery to become male again, has written his sixth book on the issue, Trans Life Survivors. In it, Heyer chronicles the stories of just 30 of the hundreds of individuals who’ve contacted him about having joined the “transmania,” each wanting to escape some conflict, loss, trauma, or personal void only to deeply regret their flawed method of dealing with these personal battles. Heyer’s books are among the few resources that speak plainly about the struggles with child abuse, mental illness, and an unsuccessful attempt to take life’s hardships and traumas and hope to wash them away by gender fluidity instead of getting needed help.

After his “transition,” Heyer’s pain remained and his mental anguish intensified due to the isolation from his children and family. As this book reveals, his story is not an isolated one. He now writes to call out the malpractice of therapists, psychiatrists, and other health care providers who’ve abandoned their Hippocratic Oath of “first, do no harm” for the politically correct and hip cultural embrace of doing whatever feels good to hide your pain.

One of the most shocking is the story of “Blair,” who holds the Guinness World Record for sex-changes surgeries — 167 — to feed his need to feel more like a woman, despite his XY chromosomal biology, his anatomy, and hormones at birth all being male. His story proves that the industry of deception holding these sad individuals captive to a cultural lie is financially lucrative. It’s also sustained by intellectual “progressives” who are bending the norms of gender roles as part of breaking the patriarchal oppression of male dominance inflicted upon society. Or some such garbage.

Don’t think that transmania and gender dysphoria are rooted in more than confusion? Why is the attempted suicide rate for “transgendered” individuals greater than 40% when it’s 0.6% among the adult population at large, according to the Centers for Disease Control? Heyer has written extensively that so much of the “science” that supports sex reassignment is faulty at best and likely fraudulent in some areas. Citing the fact that “up to 90% of gender changers in studies cannot be located for follow-up,” Heyer confirms that the research is both qualitatively and quantitatively deficient and without credibility.

The “poster child” of the gender confused is Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner38. Despite his wealth and success, his fame is no longer thanks to his world records, his Olympic gold medal as the decathlon champion, and “World’s Greatest Athlete” with his image on Wheaties boxes, Sports Illustrated covers, and TV fame. No, his celebrity status now is almost entirely because this father of six children and husband to three wives began his transition to female in 2015. Yet “Caitlyn” Jenner remains a man. All the surgeries, all the hormone injections, and all the pretense, the therapy, and the notoriety cannot change his chromosomal fingerprint.

In most adults, there are 23 pairs of chromosomes, with half of each pair coming from the mother and the other half of each pair from the father. Twenty-two of these pairs are non-sex or autosomal chromosomes. The 23rd pair of chromosomes determines sex — a female is XX and a male is XY. When the genetic coding occurs, the mother contributes the X and the father contributes the Y if the child conceived is to be male. If the child is to be female, both the mother and father contribute an X chromosome. That can’t be changed with cosmetic surgery.

So the science says there is no such thing as a “transgender,” a sex-change surgery, or any such configuration. Instead, there’s a cultural battle that has created scarred individuals and casualties who are usually seeking authentic help and answers to problems that create this crisis of identity. Heyer’s book offers real truth, and, we hope, aids others in finding a better path forward.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Tony Perkins: “After a year and a half of fighting judicial activists for power that’s been his all along, President Trump finally won a victory in his push to end social experimentation in the military. Seventeen months after he first rolled back Barack Obama’s transgender troop policy, the D.C. Circuit Court agreed that it was within his prerogative to do so. With a deference that’s almost extinct these days, three judges (including an Obama appointee) sided with the administration, saying that it had done its due diligence in researching the policy and its effects. … Honestly, this isn’t a question of fairness — it’s a question of fitness. The president isn’t banning people who identify as transgender because he hates them. He’s banning people who identify as transgender for the same reason the military doesn’t allow 71 percent of Americans to serve. Because either they’re too old and unhealthy, or our country can’t afford the distraction that medical, mental, or behavioral issues cause. That’s why there are literally hundreds of conditions or physical limitations disqualifying people from military service. So many, in fact, that your fingers will get numb scrolling through them all. The Left seems to think that there’s a ‘right’ for people to serve in the military. There isn’t. When it comes to keeping America secure, only the strongest and brightest will do. Does that make the military exclusionary? Yes. But the Pentagon isn’t in the business of equality. It’s in the business of fighting and winning wars. If that hurts feelings, so be it.”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “I hope the people on Wall Street will pay attention to the people on Main Street. If they do, they will see there is a rising tide of confidence in the future of America.”

Re: The Left: “President Trump is a lot of things, but he’s not Hitler. He didn’t kill millions of people. He didn’t star a world war. He doesn’t have any concentration camps. And to accuse him of being Hitler is intellectually dishonest, and frankly, a huge insult to the millions of Jews who died under Nazi Germany.” —Rep. Dan Crenshaw rebutting Rep. Hank Johnson’s comparison of Trump to Hitler

Braying Jenny I: “I probably have a generational reaction to it, but in any event, I’m not in the censorship business.” —Nancy Pelosi showing deference to Rashida Tlaib’s “impeach the motherf—er” tirade

Braying Jenny II: “He really IS a motherf—er!” —former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell

Demo-gogues: “I think that it only has ever been radicals that have changed this country. Abraham Lincoln made the radical decision to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the radical decision to embark on establishing programs like Social Security. That is radical. … If that’s what radical means, call me a radical.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who’s pushing the Green New Deal39

Delusions of grandeur: “What we have in mind … and my policies most closely resemble what we see in the UK, in Norway, in Finland, in Sweden.” —Ocasio-Cortez

Gun grabbers: “My heart breaks for the victims of the shooting in Torrance and their loved ones. … We must do more to address gun violence.” —Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who was quick to politicize the California bowling alley murders

This just in: “I am not a person of color. I am not a citizen of a tribe. Tribal citizenship is very different from ancestry. Tribes — and only tribes — determine tribal citizenship, and I respect that difference.” —Elizabeth Warren

Alpha Jackass: “Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration to play [Dick Cheney].” —Christian Bale

And last… “Congressman Adam Smith, the new Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, just stated, ‘Yes, there is a provision in law that says a president can declare an emergency. It’s been done a number of times.’ No doubt, but let’s get our deal done in Congress!” —Donald Trump
