IN BRIEF What Dems Used to Say About Illegal Immigration and Border Security1 Thomas Gallatin “We all agree on the need to better secure the border, and to punish employers who choose to hire illegal immigrants. We are a generous and welcoming people here in the United States, but those who enter the country illegally and those who employ them disrespect the Rule of Law, and they are showing disregard for those following the law. We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked, and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently, and lawfully to become immigrants in this country.” That was Barack Obama in 2005. In one of his savvier Twitter moments, President Donald Trump tweeted2 a video of Obama’s remarks, adding, “I agree with President Obama 100%!” Again in 2006 Obama struck a similar chord, repeating much of the same phrasing while adding, “Because we live in an age where terrorists are challenging our borders, we simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, and unchecked. Americans are right to demand better border security and better enforcement of the immigration laws.” But Obama is far from the only Democrat leader to hold these views on illegal immigration. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (CA) once declared that border control is a federal responsibility while lamenting that “we simply don’t enforce our borders adequately.” She insisted, “The day when America can be the welfare system for Mexico is gone.” And Hillary Clinton wanted to “send a clear message” when she warned, “Just because your child gets across the border, that doesn’t mean your child gets to stay.” She has also sounded downright Trumpian in the past, stating, “I am adamantly against illegal immigrants. Certainly we have to do more at our borders. … What we need is to secure our borders.” Once upon a time, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) refused to conflate legal immigration with illegal immigration, declaring, “People who enter the U.S. without our permission are illegal aliens, and illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who enter the U.S. legally. … When we use phrases like ‘undocumented workers,’ we convey to the American people that their government is not serious about combatting illegal immigration. … It is illegal and wrong.” It’s funny how Democrats and the mainstream media insist President Donald Trump and Republicans have moved to an extreme position on the issues of illegal immigration and border security. The fact is, it is Democrats who have moved and become beholden to the extreme Left. Republicans are quite simply the only ones holding a sensible and balanced position on this issue. Meanwhile, as Democrats and the Leftmedia continue to paint Trump as a Nazi-like nationalist for simply seeking to secure the U.S. border and prevent the illegal entry of this caravasion3 now estimated to be 10,000 strong, a second caravan4 of migrants is reportedly forming in Guatemala. Clearly, this problem is not going away. Fortunately, the U.S. Border Patrol has been working diligently as apprehensions of illegal aliens5 are up by nearly 100,000 to a total of 521,090 in fiscal year 2018. Perhaps, however, it’s because the economy is going gangbusters that voters are giving it a collective “meh.” President Donald Trump, congressional Republicans, and GOP-controlled state houses and governorships around the country have fostered great prosperity over the last few years with conservative policies of lower taxes and reduced regulations generally unleashing the free market. But one narcissist is jealously trumpeting (and misrepresenting) his legacy: Barack Obama. “When I walked into office 10 years ago, we were in the middle of the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes,” Obama said while stumping for Nevada Democrats in Las Vegas. “By the time I left office, wages were rising, the uninsurance rate was falling, poverty was falling, and that’s what I handed off to the next guy. So when you hear all this talk about economic miracles right now, remember who started it.” Me, me, me. I, I, I. That’s been Obama’s pattern for years, and it doesn’t change even when he’s supposed to be campaigning for other Democrats. “Unlike some, I actually try to state facts,” Obama went on to say. “I believe in facts. I believe in a fact-based reality, fact-based politics. I don’t believe in just making stuff up. I think you should actually say to people what’s true.” Clearly, he needs some help in this department. The 2008 financial crisis8 and ensuing recession happened because of deeply rooted Democrat policies and while Democrats held large majorities in Congress. It is true that Obama took office amidst a recession already in progress, but he bears responsibility for prolonging it with his “stimulus” income redistribution, heavy-handed regulation, and takeover of vast swaths of the economy. Thanks to his policies, the Obama “recovery” was the weakest on record, never reaching even 3% growth, and what recovery did take place was in spite of his best efforts. Investor’s Business Daily recounts9 the last year of Obama’s administration: “GDP growth was decelerating throughout 2016. Household income was flat. The unemployment rate was flat. At issue is an internal memo revealing that President Donald Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services is considering rescinding a 2014 Obama administration memo that attempted to redefine sex as “gender identity.” In other words, HHS is considering restoring the definition of sex used by all sane people since the beginning of time from the radical redefinition issued by Barack Obama. The Obama “memo” was not a law31 (it was never passed by Congress), and it was not a regulatory rule (it was never submitted for a public discussion period). It was just a memo from the Obama HHS expanding Title IX definitions regarding discrimination to include “gender identity,” followed by letters issued to schools and colleges warning them that failure to implement the Obama redefinition would put federal funding at risk. “Gee, that’s a nice school you got there — shame if anything happened to it…” The practical impact of the Obama memo was that schools were coerced into opening their restrooms, shower facilities, and locker rooms to members of both sexes based on “gender identity” (the sex a person “feels” they identify with) rather than on biological sex. In other words, biological boys were able to share restrooms and showers with biological girls so long as they claimed to identify as a member of that sex. Girls seeing the male anatomy at a college party: sexual assault. Girls seeing the male anatomy in a third-grade girls restroom: equality. That’s leftist “logic.” The Trump administration’s leaked memo proposed simply that HHS would define gender “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable. … Sex means a person’s status as male or female, based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth.” The New York Times, which leaked the memo, wrote an article so hilariously, hyperbolically comical32 that one would assume it is satire. Unfortunately, the paper is serious. With much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, the NYT mourned, “The Trump administration is considering narrowly defining gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth, the most drastic move yet in a governmentwide effort to roll back recognition and protections of transgender people under federal civil rights law.” Drastic move? The “new definition” is the same as the old definition before Obama unilaterally changed it with his infamous pen just a few years ago. The Times headline warned that transgendered people were at risk of being “defined out of existence.” Of course, any rational person understands that a return to the standard definition of sex does not “eradicate federal recognition of” anyone, including transgendered. Don’t believe us? Let a transgendered person stop paying his taxes and see if the IRS suddenly stopped recognizing his existence. To bolster its case, the Times quotes medical “professionals” and LGBT advocates who don’t even seem to grasp the contradictory nature of their own claims. The Times article said the change would “eradicate federal recognition of the estimated 1.4 million Americans who have opted to recognize themselves — surgically or otherwise — as a gender other than the one they were born into,” seemingly oblivious of the fact that their own words acknowledge a child is born as one gender or another, and a “transition” to the opposite gender requires surgical mutilation. Another expert cited by the Times, Dr. Joshua D. Safer, executive director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery33, stated, “As far as we in the mainstream biological-medical community understand it in 2018, it is hard-wired, it is biological, it is not entirely hormonal, and we do not have identified genes, so we cannot specifically say it is genetic.” You know, other than the XX and XY chromosomes and the clearly different genitalia. Undergirding the claims of non-biologically determined gender identity is transgenderism (medically known as “gender dysphoria34,” a psychological disorder) itself, and repeated references to those born as intersex (born with both male and female characteristics). However, even with intersex births, those children almost always manifest as one sex or the other. In other words, the Obama administration used the 0.6% of Americans who identify as transgender and the 0.067% born demonstrably intersex to completely upend society’s ordering of much of our lives under gender differences. That is evidence the decision was driven not by science or compassion but by radical ideology. That we are born male and female is a truth so obvious and immutable35 as to be shocking to see otherwise intelligent human beings debating. And rejecting that truth only sows confusion and sorrow, as evidenced by the 40% of transgenders who attempt suicide — even after surgery — and the growing number of post-surgery transgenders now seeking to reverse their surgeries36. Regardless of confusion over sexual identity, all human beings have dignity as creations of God, and all are deserving of kindness, compassion, and respect. God created male and female, in His image, and the more we stray from that truth, the more we dehumanize.
