IN BRIEF

Trump Sets the Record Straight on Justice Kavanaugh1
Thomas Gallatin

Often official government ceremonies can feel rote and uninteresting due to their formality. However, Monday’s official swearing-in ceremony for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was palpably different. After the nation experienced one of the most contentious political battles surrounding the confirmation process of a SCOTUS nominee, the air was still thick with tension. And President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly demonstrated that he will not be bullied into silence, was not about to let the moment pass without setting the record straight.

In introducing the newest justice, Trump started by thanking all the Supreme Court justices for their service. He specifically recognized retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, stating, “Justice Kennedy, America owes you a profound debt of gratitude for a lifetime of noble service to our nation. And I want to thank you very much.”

After thanking several others, including Antonin Scalia’s widow Maureen and White House Counsel Don McGahn, and then welcoming Kavanaugh’s family, Trump shifted to deliberately address the elephant in the room — the Democrat-orchestrated hit-job2 against Kavanaugh. Trump declared:

I would like to begin tonight’s proceeding differently than perhaps any other event of such magnitude. On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure.

Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation, not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception. What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency, and due process.

[In] our country, a man or woman must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. And with that, I must state that you, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent. …

Margaret and Liza, your father is a great man. He is a man of decency, character, kindness, and courage who has devoted his life to serving his fellow citizens. And now from the bench of our nation’s highest court, your father will defend the eternal rights and freedoms of all Americans.

Trump also acknowledged the Republican senators who worked to confirm Kavanaugh, specifically highlighting the leadership of Mitch McConnell (KY), Chuck Grassley (IA) and all the Republicans of the Judiciary Committee, as well as Susan Collins (R-ME) “for her brave and eloquent speech.”

After taking the Judicial Oath, Kavanaugh spoke of his gratitude for all those who have influenced and impacted him throughout his life. Near the end of his comments, he acknowledged that “the Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional,” but he noted that “although the Senate confirmation process tested me, as it has tested others, it did not change me.” He pledged, “My approach to judging remains the same. A good judge must be an umpire, a neutral and impartial decider who favors no litigant or policy. A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law. A judge must interpret statutes as written. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent.” He then concluded, “As a Justice on the Supreme Court, I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and the American Rule of Law.”

Taylor Swift Endorses Brett Kavanaugh Supporter3

Nate Jackson

You may want to sit down for this one.

A celebrity has come out in support of Democrats. Shocking news, we know. But pop sensation Taylor Swift has been remarkably quiet about politics over the course of her decade-long career, despite the best efforts of the social justice warriors to initiate her into the sisterhood. So it actually did come as somewhat of a surprise when the Millennial star decided to publicly endorse Tennessee Democrat Phil Bredesen for U.S. Senate and Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Nashville).

So why did Taylor, er, “Speak Now”4?

One reason: Brett Kavanaugh. Back in December, Time magazine selected as its “Person of the Year” representatives of the #MeToo movement. Swift was in the cover photo5 because of her story of having been groped. Her presence was not without controversy, but it did serve the larger leftist purpose to turn #MeToo into such a vast swath of grievances — anything from catcalls or a pinch on the rear end to actual violent assault and rape — that all women would feel a deeper emotional connection to a certain political party.

That #MeToo emotional connection is precisely why Swift decided she could no longer hold her peace.

Thus, as much as she says she “would like to continue voting for women in office,” Swift says the Republican Senate candidate in Tennessee, Marsha Blackburn, “appalls and terrifies” her. Swift proceeded to falsify and distort Blackburn’s record6 (aren’t all women supposed to be “believed”?) while offering no reason to vote for Bredesen or Cooper beyond the typical blather about “LGBTQ rights” and supposed “systemic racism” of the other side.

Swift did not mention, of course, Bredesen’s own sketchy record7 on sexual harassment. Nor did she note the greatest irony of all: Bredesen’s support for Kavanaugh8. Bredesen trails in the polls in a red state, so he needed to appear moderate and thoughtful on that Supreme Court nomination. But given that #MeToo and Kavanaugh’s confirmation finally prompted Swift’s public statement, that hypocrisy might create a little “Bad Blood”9 between Swift and her conservative fans.

GOOD NEWS

Profiles of Valor: USA Staff Sgt. Ronald J. Shurer24
President Donald Trump recently awarded the Medal of Honor to U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ronald J. Shurer, a Special Forces medic who is now in the U.S. Secret Service — and battling stage four lung cancer. Trump was gracious and personal in his remarks, saying, “Today is a truly proud and special day for those of us here in the White House, because Ron works right here alongside of us on the Secret Service Counter Assault Team. These are incredible people.”

The account of the 2008 battle in Afghanistan comes from his official citation25:

Staff Sergeant Ronald J. Shurer II distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty on April 6, 2008, while serving as a Senior Medical Sergeant, Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3336, Special Operations Task Force-33, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Staff Sergeant Shurer was part of an assault element inserted by helicopter into a location in Afghanistan. As the assault element moved up a near vertical mountain toward its objective, it was engaged by fierce enemy machine gun, sniper, and rocket-propelled grenade fire. The lead portion of the assault element, which included the ground commander, sustained several casualties and became pinned down on the mountainside. Staff Sergeant Shurer and the rest of the trailing portion of the assault element were likewise engaged by enemy machine gun, sniper, and rocket-propelled grenade fire. As the attack intensified, Staff Sergeant Shurer braved enemy fire to move to an injured Soldier and treat his wounds. Having stabilized the injured Soldier, Staff Sergeant Shurer then learned of the casualties among the lead element. Staff Sergeant Shurer fought his way up the mountainside, under intense enemy fire, to the lead element’s location. Upon reaching the lead element, he treated and stabilized two more Soldiers. Finishing those lifesaving efforts, Staff Sergeant Shurer noticed two additional severely wounded Soldiers under intense enemy fire. The bullet that had wounded one of these Soldiers had also impacted Staff Sergeant Shurer’s helmet. With complete disregard for his own life, Staff Sergeant Shurer again moved through enemy fire to treat and stabilize one Soldier’s severely wounded arm. Shortly thereafter, Staff Sergeant Shurer continued to brave withering enemy fire to get to the other Soldier’s location in order to treat his lower leg, which had been almost completely severed by a high-caliber sniper round. After treating the Soldier, Staff Sergeant Shurer began to evacuate the wounded; carrying and lowering them down the sheer mountainside. While moving down the mountain, Staff Sergeant Shurer used his own body to shield the wounded from enemy fire and debris caused by danger-close air strikes. Reaching the base of the mountain, Staff Sergeant Shurer set up a casualty collection point and continued to treat the wounded. With the arrival of the medical evacuation helicopter, Staff Sergeant Shurer, again under enemy fire, helped load the wounded into the helicopter.

Having ensured the safety of the wounded, Staff Sergeant Shurer then regained control of his commando squad and rejoined the fight. He continued to lead his troops and emplace security elements until it was time to move to the evacuation landing zone for the helicopter. Staff Sergeant Shurer’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan, Special Operations Command Central, and the United States Army.

As Trump remarked26, “For more than six hours, Ron bravely faced down the enemy. Not a single American died in that brutal battle, thanks in great measure to Ron’s heroic actions.”

FEATURED ANALYSIS
UN: It’s Climate Doomsday, and We Mean It This Time32

Lewis Morris

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change announced in a new report33 that the world has just 12 years to make drastic and changes — “unprecedented in terms of scale” — to reduce global warming or we will suffer an irreversible climate catastrophe. As if we needed just one more apocalyptic warning to finally believe these Chicken Littles.

Remember, this UN report comes just 12 years after Al Gore declared we had 10 years left to save the planet. And 36 years after the UN itself said we had 20 years.

This latest doomsday scenario34 claims that if the nations of the world don’t take major steps to reduce carbon emissions, we will miss the last opportunity to reduce rising temperatures, basically signing humanity’s death warrant.

No really; they mean it this time!

The New York Times is appalled35 … at President Donald Trump. “A day after the United Nations issued its most urgent call to arms yet for the world to confront the threat of climate change, President Trump boarded Air Force One for Florida — a state that lies directly in the path of this coming calamity — and said nothing about it,” the Times harrumphed in an editorial masquerading as a news report.

The UN report calls for limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) over the next 10 years. In order to reach this goal, of course, governments must make “rapid and far-reaching” changes to their energy industries by switching to renewable energy sources and phasing out global coal production, while forcing automotive companies to ramp up production of electric cars. Several nations already want to ban combustion engines by 2040; California Democrats do too36.

It’s a long shot that the nations of the world can reduce carbon emissions by one million tons a year, so the UN report conveniently notes that a brief overshoot of the temperature goal will still put us on track to save the planet, so long as everyone sticks to the overall plan.

This latest climate report follows the leftist game plan to use climate change as a path to global socialism, to bring sovereign governments and the international economy to heel under a Marxist cabal that would dictate what countries can manufacture and what people can purchase and how, or if, they travel.

The climate alarmism of the Left37 goes back decades, and it has always been tied to forcing people to change their behavior in a manner that suits the leftist worldview.

In the 1970s, we were told that overpopulation and a coming ice age would deplete our resources and cause massive starvation. The solution was for First World middle- and upper-class people to stop having children and consuming resources. In the 1980s, global warming became the new culprit with the claim that our coastal cities would all be underwater38 by the turn of the century. The cure? Massive price and tax hikes for First World energy producers and consumers to convince them to reduce their “carbon footprint.”

Why should the United States pay such a high price for global warming? Of all the nations that are signatories to the Paris climate accord, America is the only one that has actually reduced carbon emissions39. And, of course, we’re the only signatory to withdraw40, just as Trump promised. Yet most of the solutions that scientists propose to “fix” the problem disproportionately target the capitalist U.S., leaving communist China — the world’s largest polluter — alone.

In every instance, a large number of climate scientists have, either willingly or without realizing it, tried to advance the agenda of the Left. Some have admitted to manipulating data to enhance the danger. Others simply trash the reputations of any colleague who dares question the gospel of global warming. Reasoned debate and research, the backbone of good science, has no room when the real goal is to force a particular outcome or behavior upon the people.

Everyone suffers in this climate of fear. When UN panels, universities, and hustlers like Gore lay out doomsday scenarios and use cooked data to warn of “last chances” and “tipping points” to stop the apocalypse, how is the public supposed to know what is true and what is false about global warming? Environmentalists appear puzzled that people aren’t more concerned about the issue. Perhaps they would be more attentive if they weren’t being lied to so brazenly.

MORE ANALYSIS FROM THE PATRIOT POST

The Real Boost the Marine Corps Needs41 — “The few” need to be not-so-few, and they need the best gear they can get.
Video: Goodbye, Columbus Day42 — Holidays are a great time to riddle Americans with needless, oppressive guilt.
OPINION IN BRIEF
Rich Lowry: “Democrats suffered a stinging loss in the fight over Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, and have concluded that the constitutional system is to blame. You see, if only the Founders hadn’t forged the Great Compromise between large states and small states at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, giving each state equal representation in the U.S. Senate, they would have defeated Brett Kavanaugh handily. It’s only because smaller red states have two senators just like larger blue states that the judge got confirmed. … The design of the Senate recognizes the status of the states as real governing entities with their own prerogatives under the Constitution. Like the equally hated Electoral College, the Senate ensures that flyover country isn’t ignored. It reflects the dizzying geographic diversity of a continental nation and promotes national cohesion by giving every corner of it a voice. The Senate also is meant to be a check on the unbridled popular will. Its members are elected in staggered six-year terms, and, originally, they were selected by state legislatures, not in a direct vote. The House is the more democratic body. California has 53 representatives; Wyoming has one. Yet Democrats don’t control the House, either. The root of the problem is that Democrats, who threw all in with an urban-oriented ‘coalition of the ascendant’ beginning in 2008, don’t have much appeal to the middle of the country anymore. … Rather than cursing the design of the Senate, Democrats would be better-served simply winning Senate elections, a cause they materially harmed with their fevered attack on Brett Kavanaugh.”

SHORT CUTS

For the record: “The [Supreme] Court’s job is to neutrally uphold the law — whether that law be in the form of statute or the Constitution itself. In this context, the concept of a ‘swing vote’ makes little sense.” —Charles C.W. Cooke

Complaints: “Well, you know at some point there were a lot of folks coming forward making all sorts of accusations. It turns it into a circus atmosphere and certainly that’s not where we should be. I think we should have focused on the serious allegations that certainly appeared very credible to me.” —Sen. Gary Peters, lamenting the even more ludicrous accusations against Brett Kavanaugh that followed Dr. Ford’s

Hyper hypocrisy: “I think that [protesters running senators out of restaurants] just means that there are a lot of people who are very, very much motivated by what is going on, because what happened with Judge Kavanaugh … was not a fair process. … This is what happens, you know, because when you look at white supremacists and all of that, this is what is coming forth in our country. There is a tremendous divisiveness in our country.” —Sen. Mazie Hirono, who blames Republicans for the divisiveness Democrats caused

Non Compos Mentis: “We’re going to see if this reign — that [Republicans] now have control over all three branches of government — we’re going to see if this reign lasts for 30 days or two years, or a thousand-year Reich.” —MSNBC contributor Elie Mystal

Maximum cynicism: “Kavanaugh is worth a lot more alive than dead. … This is not going to go away. They’re not going to stop doing stories on Kavanaugh. They’re going to keep him front and center. If the Democrats win the House, they’ll probably hold some kind of hearings on the fact that a lot of people think that he perjured himself during his confirmation hearings to the Court of Appeals. … He’s not going to go away.” —Clintonista James Carville

Braying Jenny: “It is well past time we eliminate the Electoral College, a shadow of slavery’s power on America today that undermines our nation as a democratic republic.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

And last… “In the end, no bad behavior was proved about Kavanaugh, but plenty of horrible behavior was proved about those who tossed out all principles to try and take him down.” —Frank J. Fleming
