IN BRIEF
America Is Governed by Americans, Trump Tells UN1

Thomas Gallatin

President Donald Trump addressed the UN General Assembly Tuesday, and while a few may have laughed or jeered, Trump delivered a pointed and clear message to world leaders: America first. Long gone are the days of kowtowing to globalists. Trump boldly declared, “America is governed by Americans. We reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism around the world. Responsible nations must defend against threats to sovereignty. And not just from governments but from the other newer forms of coercion and domination.” He continued, “I honor every nation to pursue its own customs, beliefs, and traditions. The United States will not tell you how to live or work or worship. We only ask that you honor our sovereignty in return.”

Trump also called out socialism for the disaster that it is, declaring, “Currently, we are witnessing a human tragedy … in Venezuela. More than two million people have fled the anguish inflicted by the socialist Maduro regime and its Cuban sponsors. Not long ago, Venezuela was one of the richest countries on Earth. Today, socialism has bankrupted the oil-rich nation and driven its people into abject poverty.” Pulling no punches, Trump then explained, “Virtually everywhere socialism or communism has been tried, it has produced suffering, corruption, and decay. Socialism’s thirst for power leads to expansion, incursion, and oppression.”

He spoke on the ongoing tragedy of the Syrian civil war and warned, “The United States will respond if chemical weapons are deployed by the Assad regime.” Trump then pivoted to place the lion’s share of blame for the Middle East’s continued instability on Iran’s leaders, noting that they “sow chaos, death, and destruction. They do not respect their neighbors or borders, or the sovereign rights of nations. Instead, Iran’s leaders plunder the nation’s resources to enrich themselves and to spread mayhem across the Middle East and far beyond.” He blasted Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal as “a windfall for Iran’s leaders,” which served only to fund the dictatorship in building “nuclear-capable missiles, increase internal repression, finance terrorism, and fund havoc and slaughter in Syria and Yemen.”

Trump noted his administration’s success thus far in dealing with North Korea, which was a significant contrast from his “Rocket Man” rhetoric against Kim Jong-un a year ago. He asserted, “We had highly productive conversations and meetings, and we agreed that it was in both countries’ interest to pursue the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Since that meeting, we have already seen a number of encouraging measures that few could have imagined only a short time ago. The missiles and rockets are no longer flying in every direction. Nuclear testing has stopped. Some military facilities are already being dismantled.”

Overall Trump’s speech was a refreshing example of good American leadership and an encouraging update on his administration’s successful foreign policy thus far. And the one theme that ran throughout Trump’s message was simple: America stands for sovereignty, not elitist globalism.

Trump Presses China as He Sees Success in Asia2

President Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs against Chinese goods went into effect Monday. Predictably, Beijing responded by raising another $60 billion in tariffs against the U.S.‘s $200 billion. China is now approaching the point of running out of U.S. goods to target with tariffs. One thing’s clear: Neither side is showing any signs of backing down. It looks like China has decided to play the long game, waiting it out and hoping that the impact of the tariffs will negatively affect Trump politically3. But as we have stated repeatedly, Trump’s actions against China are more than merely seeking economic concessions.

On the heels of the latest tariff levy, Trump signed a new major trade deal with South Korea, the U.S.’s sixth-largest trade partner, which he called a “historic milestone in trade.” The new deal will reduce the U.S. trade deficit with South Korea by more than double the original 2012 U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS).

But Trump is accomplishing a couple of other things here, too. With this new KORUS deal he’s shored up an important regional ally and come through on his campaign promise to renegotiate trade deals so as to ensure that they are reciprocal and fair to the U.S. Secondly, he continues to send the message to China that he will not back down until Beijing turns from its unfair trade tactics. Third, he is also sending a message to North Korean dictator and Chinese puppet Kim Jong-un. Essentially, the message tells Kim to compare the relationship that South Korea has with the U.S. versus the relationship North Korea has with China. Clearly, South Korea has prospered far more from its close relationship with the U.S. than has North Korea from China.

On that note, the White House is working on setting up a second Trump/Kim summit, with Trump recently stating, “I think a lot of progress is being made. I see tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of Chairman Kim for making a deal, and I think that’s something that’s very good.”

Finally, in the midst of these moves, the U.S. sent another signal against Chinese regional aggression when the State Department approved the $330 million sale of F-16 fighter planes and parts to Taiwan. The Chinese, of course, still claim that self-ruled island nation as their own territory and refuse to recognize its independence. This is a stick in the eye to Beijing, and it’s all part of a sweeping strategy.

FEATURED ANALYSIS
Should Immigrants Take Care of Themselves?23

Lewis Morris

The Department of Homeland Security posted a proposal24 on its website last weekend that would more closely tie immigration to financial self-sufficiency. The corollary is that it would become more difficult for immigrants who rely heavily on government assistance to stay in the country. The proposed rule is in line with President Donald Trump’s promise to change the current immigration system to one that is merit-based and focused on job skills.

DHS will allow a 60-day public comment period on the proposal before publishing its final rule in the Federal Register.

“Under long-standing federal law, those seeking to immigrate to the United States must show they can support themselves financially,” DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement. She added that the proposed changes would “promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers.”

Current rules require green-card applicants to prove that they would not become a public burden, but the proposed changes would expand the number of assistance programs that could disqualify applicants — Medicaid subsidies, food stamps, or housing vouchers. Certain groups of refugees, asylum seekers, and legal permanent residents seeking citizenship would be exempt from the rules.

The Washington Post did its best25 to demonize the move, apparently proceeding from the assumption that the U.S. does not have a right to curtail immigration or ask more of the immigrants allowed into the country.

The Post quoted Diane Yentel, president of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, who presented a straw-man argument in opposition to the proposed ruling: “This would force families — including citizen children — to choose between getting the help they need and remaining in their communities.”

What the ruling does is send a signal that immigrants cannot come to America with no prospects and expect to gain access to public assistance as a means of supporting their families. And, yes, the 600,000 or so DACA kids who are looking to file for permanent residency could be affected by the proposed rules. But if Congress had taken up Trump’s proposal26 to permanently fix the Dreamers’ status earlier this year, this wouldn’t be an issue.

The Post also hastens to add, “Advocacy groups see the measure as one more attempt by the Trump administration to limit legal immigration and reduce the number of foreigners living in the United States.” Well, yeah. Last we checked, it is a sovereign nation’s right to limit the number or type of foreign-born peoples it allows within its borders. And the foreign-born population in the U.S. is currently at its highest levels27 in over a century.

Leftists are quick to label any strengthening or enforcement of immigration laws as racism or xenophobia. They just don’t want to be cut off from a fresh source of potential voters who they can string out on government subsidies. The Post, flagship outlet of the Leftmedia, pointed out that foreign-born people use government assistance at roughly the same percentage as native-born Americans, as if this fact is supposed to make the new DHS proposal appear ineffective or redundant. The Post conveniently leaves out the burden placed on taxpayers by people who are here illegally.

The cost of illegal immigration on the country has been vastly underestimated28. Not just the financial cost, either. For well over a decade, the media and many agencies have consistently reported the illegal-alien population at around 11 million. A new study29 by three researchers at Yale, however, found that there may be more than 22 million illegals in the U.S.

The researchers were not motivated by politics in conducting the study — at least not conservative politics. They just wanted to figure out why the commonly reported number of 11 million didn’t make sense.

“There’s a number that everybody quotes, but when you actually dig down and say, ‘What is it based on?’ you find it’s based on one very specific survey and possibly an approach that has some difficulties. So we went in and just took a very different approach,” said Jonathan Feinstein30, a professor of Economics and Management and one of the authors of the study.

This is information the Left doesn’t want getting out. If Americans learn that there are literally twice as many illegal aliens in the country than they have been told, then they will more broadly support the border wall, stricter border enforcement, and the DHS rule proposal.

MORE ANALYSIS FROM THE PATRIOT POST

Hypocritical Dems Want Lower Taxes for Their Wealthy31 — All while a new report shows that average food and clothing outlays were dwarfed by tax burdens.
Good Midterm News for the GOP32 — Two recent polls may indicate that the blue wave isn’t as guaranteed as some think.
Video: Turning Justice on Its Head33 — Is Brett Kavanaugh guilty until proven innocent simply because he’s a conservative man?

OPINION IN BRIEF

Star Parker: “The whole point of the 14th Amendment, enacted after the Civil War, was to guarantee every American due process and equal protection under the law. But with this show around Kavanaugh’s confirmation, the Democratic Party has unmasked itself as a party whose only interest is in a left-wing political agenda, not the law. It is exactly why Democrats see conservative judges, like Kavanaugh, who take the Constitution seriously, as a mortal threat. Democrats want politics and their agenda, not law. Hence, an outstanding and honorable man’s good name and reputation is being besmirched with unsubstantiated and tenuous claims. The long-accepted tradition that the burden of proof is upon the accuser, not the accused, is being thrown to the trash bin. It should be of particular concern to blacks and women that we live in a nation in which law stands above politics. Blacks, because this is what the civil rights movement was about. Women, because this is not just about themselves and their daughters but equally about their husbands and sons.”

SHORT CUTS

Upright: “It should go without saying that the Supreme Court should not be this important. If it were just a judicial tribunal, even the highest-ranking one in the nation, the only thing we would care about would be having its bench filled by high-quality, high-character legal talent. The justices’ politics and partisan affiliations would be irrelevant because they would be technicians applying law to narrow legal questions, not making law and deciding how 325 million people who did not vote for them should live.” —Andrew McCarthy

For the record: “If the GOP goes with Amy Barret Comey, she’ll be attacked for conspiring to get women raped and forcing gay conversion therapy on people. If the GOP goes with Jesus, he’ll be attacked for forcing people to give up their demons and killing pigs. Lies will be used on them all.” —Erick Erickson

Village Idiots: “I believe Christine Blasey Ford and I demand that our Senators vote to reject Brett Kavanaugh as the next Justice on the Supreme Court. Every person who refuses to loudly and openly reject Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination is telling every generation of Americans that an alleged abuser’s career is more valuable than a survivor’s humanity. And the highest court in our land is no place for an alleged sexual offender to sit.” —actress Alyssa Milano

Non Compos Mentis: “I put [Kavanaugh’s] denial in the context of everything that I know about him in terms of how he approaches his cases.” —Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI)

Alpha Jackass: “So even though Dr Ford is saying please stop, slow down, I’m not comfortable with the way this is going, the GOP is gonna plow through, ignore her telling them to stop and just take what they think is rightfully theirs?” —MSNBC’s Chris Hayes

Deep state: “This is a classic espionage ‘wilderness of mirrors.’ This is a set up, deliberately … leaked to provoke Trump into firing Rob Rosenstein.” —Mark Steyn on the Rosenstein obstruction setup34

Hypocrite: “Believe me, I am frustrated, too. I am sick of all the chaos and the nastiness of our politics. It’s exhausting and, frankly, it’s depressing. I understand wanting to shut it all out.” —Michelle Obama, whose husband epitomized the moniker of divider-in-chief

And last… “Noteworthy to watch all the media rushing to insist that Kavanaugh’s diaries don’t ‘prove anything.’ If only that were the standard they also maintained regarding the accusers’ (evidence free) allegations.” —Kimberley Strassel
