THE FOUNDATION

“No country upon earth ever had it more in its power to attain these blessings than United America. Wondrously strange, then, and much to be regretted indeed would it be, were we to neglect the means and to depart from the road which Providence has pointed us to so plainly; I cannot believe it will ever come to pass.” —George Washington (1788)

IN BRIEF
Hollywood’s Fake Moon Landing1

Nate Jackson

On Oct. 12, the nation will be treated to a movie depicting the American moon landing on July 20, 19692. “First Man” will tell the story of how Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, and many other Americans at NASA fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s vision of being the first nation on the planet to put a man on the moon. That vision wasn’t about humanity so much as it was advancing America’s interests. The entire Apollo program is an incredible story of American ingenuity, determination, and achievement, and the moon landing — with less technology than in some modern kitchen appliances — was a significant victory in the Cold War after the Soviets launched Sputnik, the first manned mission in space, a decade earlier.

That’s why it rubs many Americans the wrong way when it became known that Hollywood’s depiction eliminates the planting of the American flag on the moon. It was, after all, one of Armstrong’s first actions on the lunar surface, and one of the most iconic images of the landing is Aldrin saluting that flag.

Yet the Canadian actor playing Armstrong, Ryan Gosling, says the movie eliminated the flag because America’s feat “transcended countries and borders” and that it wasn’t so much an American accomplishment as a “human achievement.” He admitted his being Canadian may leave him with “cognitive bias,” but he insisted, “I don’t think that Neil viewed himself as an American hero. From my interviews with his family and people that knew him, it was quite the opposite. And we wanted the film to reflect Neil.”

Of course Armstrong would say he wasn’t an American hero, even though he most certainly was. As even Gosling acknowledged, Armstrong was “extremely humble” and routinely “deferred the focus from himself.” That’s what true American heroes do. And though Armstrong’s famous line was a tribute to the human race — “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind” — he was absolutely not some borderless “citizen of the world” who didn’t love his country. Upon Armstrong’s death in 2012, even Barack Obama hailed him as “among the greatest of American heroes.”

The Hollywood Reporter really gave the game away: “Most notable is the film’s refusal to engage in the expected jingoistic self-celebration that such a milestone would seem to demand. At a time when the toxic political climate has cheapened that kind of nationalistic fervor, turning it into empty rhetoric … [that] is to be savored.” In other words, Trump Derangement Syndrome3, and Americans are beyond weary of such contempt from Hollywood.

We’ll give the last word to Buzz Aldrin, who simply tweeted two pictures4 of himself and Armstrong with the American flag and the hashtag #proudtobeanAmerican — as was, most assuredly, Neil Armstrong.

Nike Takes a Knee5
Thomas Gallatin

In the 30th year since introducing its “Just Do It” slogan, Nike has chosen to make controversial ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick the latest face of its famous branding ad campaign. In announcing that he had agreed to the ad campaign, Kaepernick wrote, “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. #Justdoit.” Gee, it must be so “tough” to “sacrifice everything,” as he now has a deal with Nike worth millions of dollars.

The reality is this is a business deal for the Nike brass. They’re betting on the demographic appeal of elevating a leftist social justice warrior “star” in order to sell their product. As Nike’s vice president of brand for North America, Gino Fisanotti, noted, “We believe Colin is one of the most inspirational athletes of this generation, who has leveraged the power of sport to help move the world forward.” He added, “We wanted to energize its meaning and introduce ‘Just Do It’ to a new generation of athletes.” The irony here is that Kaepernick has not played in the NFL for the past two seasons, and it’s a good bet that he never will again.

Many within sports media claim, and Kaepernick himself has insisted, that the reason he is not on an NFL team is due to league-wide prejudice against him because of his anthem-kneeling protests. In other words, he’s a “martyr” for the cause. However, the fact remains that what got him benched and eventually released in the first place was his poor play. The truth is Kaepernick was an average quarterback at best.

As has been noted, the NFL has lost a significant number of fans over its failure to properly respond to the anthem controversy. It will be interesting to see if Nike sees a similar negative impact to its bottom line over its politically motivated decision to promote a zero as a hero.

Circling the Wagons for Elizabeth Warren6

Elizabeth Warren has long insisted that she is of Native American heritage based on little more than family “lore.” We teased her7 for it during her first Senate run in 2012, and we most recently rebuked her doubling down8 on the issue for political race-bait points against Donald Trump.

Now her fellow tribesmen at The Boston Globe and Harvard — leftists invested in her agenda — have (and to use mixed metaphors) circled the wagons to lend “legitimacy” to her simultaneous claims that this supposed heritage helped advance her career. After six years of stonewalling, Warren released a trove of documents from her academic record to her friends at the Globe. See how transparent she is?

Dutifully, the Globe’s story, “Ethnicity not a factor in Elizabeth Warren’s rise in law9,” used those documents and interviews with Warren and her former colleagues in academia to purportedly debunk the “narrative” of her “political enemies.” Yet the story proceeds to admit that she did use her “minority” status for gain in her academic career.

Essentially, the Globe and her Harvard cronies are splitting hairs. Warren may not have used her heritage in interviews for jobs, but that’s likely because it might have led to someone disproving the claim, ending her little charade too quickly. But it’s unquestionable that she used it to advance her career.

“My family is my family, but my background played no role in my getting hired anywhere,” Warren protested. Well, you know, other than when she played up that “background” while employed at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. The latter, according to the Boston Herald, “prominently touted Warren’s Native American background … in an effort to bolster their diversity hiring record.” She was also featured as Native American in The Harvard Crimson in 1996.

This story might be little more than a flash in the pan if Warren wasn’t still trying to advance her career with such identity politics. And no matter the blood in her veins, the saga speaks poorly of her honesty and character.

MORE ANALYSIS FROM THE PATRIOT POST

Iran, Iraq, and Obama31 — New information sheds light on Iran’s involvement in Iraq. Just remember how much Obama “helped.”
Due Process, Even on College Campuses32 — Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is soon to release specifics on a major policy change.
Video: Left or Liberal?33 — This question stumps most people because they think liberal and left are essentially the same.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Dennis Prager: “Why does the left do this? Why does it incessantly libel Republicans and conservatives as racists? The answers are as vile as they are obvious. First, the left fears that unless blacks continue to believe Republicans are racists, they will not overwhelmingly vote Democrat. And if they don’t, Democrats will not regain the White House for the foreseeable future. The same holds true for depicting Republicans and conservatives as women haters. There is no better way to persuade college-indoctrinated women to vote Democrat. And the same holds true for Latinos — Republicans must be continuously labeled ‘white supremacists’ and ‘xenophobes’ or they, too, may not reliably vote Democrat. Second, though most intellectuals are on the left, the intellectual foundation of left-wing beliefs is unbelievably weak. Leftism is almost entirely emotion-based. That’s another reason the left smears conservatives and tries wherever possible to prevent conservatives from speaking in the university, on the internet and by the many big businesses in the hands of people on the left: Since leftists cannot debate conservatives, they have to smear them. America is the least-racist multiracial, multiethnic nation in world history. The left’s constant need to locate racism where it doesn’t exist is proof of this.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “The career of a politician mainly consists in making one part of the nation do what it does not want to do, in order to please and satisfy the other part of the nation. It is the prolonged sacrifice of the rights of some persons at the bidding and for the satisfaction of other persons.” —Auberon Herbert (1838-1906)

Upright: “The laity is the church. They have sacrificed finances to give their children a catholic education, have tithed, followed church tradition, looked for guidance. To have any moral authority, [Pope Francis] must release any reports of abuse. Period. … I don’t care if every previous Pope is exposed. My allegiance is not to any man or institution, but only to Christ crucified and risen, who warned that it would be better to drown with a millstone around your neck than to cause his little ones to stumble.” —actress Patricia Heaton

Dezinformatsiya: “There’s a new kind of campaign underway — one that most of my colleagues and I have never publicly reported on, never fully analyzed, and never fully acknowledged: the campaign to destroy the legitimacy of the American news media. … Some of the wealthiest members of the media are not reporters from mainstream outlets. Figures such as Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge, and the trio of Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and Laura Ingraham have attained wealth and power by exploiting the fears of older white people. They are thriving financially by exploiting the very same free-press umbrella they seem determined to undermine.” —Chuck Todd

Non Compos Mentis: “The #NFL season will start this week, unfortunately once again [Colin Kaepernick ] is not on a NFL roster. Even though he is one of the best Quarterbacks in the league.” —former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

And last… “Social media co’s should simply have to decide btwn being a publisher or a platform. If a publisher, theyre liable for everything published on their site — libel, etc. If a platform, they should be neutral. They want to be both: a publisher to censor & a platform to deny liability.” —Allie Beth Stuckey
