THE FOUNDATION “Enlighten the people, generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirits at the dawn of day.” —Thomas Jefferson (1816) IN BRIEF Communism: Ignorance Isn’t Bliss1 As the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution2, responsible for unleashing one of the bloodiest and most oppressive epochs in world history, is upon us, a disturbing survey3 recently released by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation shows that a majority of Millennials favor socialism and communism over capitalism. The survey notes that 58% of Millennials would rather be living under some form of collectivist system than the free market-based system of capitalism. Marion Smith, executive director of the Victims of Communism, states, “Millennials now make up the largest generation in America, and we’re seeing some deeply worrisome trends. Millennials are increasingly turning away from capitalism and toward socialism and even communism as a viable alternative.” Maybe even more troubling, the survey shows that nearly one in five Millennials view Josef Stalin as a “hero.” Out on a limb, but perhaps that’s because their public school education didn’t include the fact that Stalin killed tens of millions of his own citizens. Indeed, what are American kids being taught in school? If the idealization of communism isn’t an indictment against America’s poor educational standards, specifically relating to historical events, then we don’t know what is. Should we be surprised that a growing number of college students support restrictions to free speech rights? Much of the problem may lie with the fact that most Millennials have never truly experienced tyrannically oppressive and murderous government. Nor do they appreciate the very real dangers and threats posed by communist powers during the Cold War. Too often leftist teachers and professors fill students’ minds with the flawed notions of “fairness” of equal outcome rather than the justice of equal opportunity. Historian Sean McMeekin warns, “Today’s Western socialist, dreaming of a world where private property and inequality are outlawed, where rational economic development is planned by far-seeing intellectuals, should be careful what they wish for. They may just get it.” Factors for increasing numbers of Millennials disillusioned with capitalism may be due to the fact that a majority (53%) feel burdened by the economy, as it has been widely speculated that the Millennial generation will actually fare worse than their parents economically. A generation growing up with high levels of debt and lower earning power while being taught that they’re victims of “The System” will naturally seek to change it, rather than change themselves. The Politics of Hatred4 Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was attacked from behind by his neighbor as he was mowing his own lawn (think about that for a minute) in Bowling Green, Kentucky, last Friday. “Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault. The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police,” said Kelsey Cooper, Sen. Paul’s communications director. Paul suffered five broken ribs, including three displaced fractures. Clearly, that wasn’t very neighborly. And as details slowly emerge, it was worse than that. The lawyer for Rene Boucher, the neighbor who attacked Paul, claims the dispute that precipitated the attack had nothing to do with politics but was over some “trivial” matter. He insisted, “Senator Paul and Dr. Boucher have been next-door neighbors for 17 years. They are also prominent members of the local medical community and worked together when they were both practicing physicians. The unfortunate occurrence of November 3rd has absolutely nothing to do with either’s politics or political agendas.” Perhaps, but it’s no secret that Paul and his neighbor are on opposite sides of the political spectrum and evidently have not spoken to each other in years. There is an obvious reason why Boucher’s lawyer would seek to distance his client’s motivation from anything political. If it was political, then Boucher is looking at a federal rather than a state offense, and attacking a U.S. senator “on account of the performance of official duties” carries an 8 to 20 year prison term. At the very least, Boucher faces felony rather than misdemeanor charges due to the severity of the attack. Irrespective of how this particular incident plays out, the fact that we are questioning if politics was a motive says much about the current state of our national political climate — a political climate in which congressional Republicans are targeted for assassination5 by a socialist. When Democrats, the mainstream media and popular culture feel entirely justified to regularly and falsely paint Republicans and conservatives as the party of racists and bigots6, when Hillary Clinton labels Donald Trump’s supporters a “basket of deplorables7,” and when the Left sees no problem resisting and calling for the impeachment of a justly elected president simply because they don’t like him, we have a real problem. This is type of hatred is the result of one side choosing to exploit identity politics. It remains to be seen if Paul’s neighbor was indeed driven by politically fueled hatred, but there is little question that on a national level America has a dangerously growing problem with “progressive” hate. FEATURED ANALYSIS The Truth About the Texas Attack23 By Paul Albaugh On Sunday, another deranged, hate-filled individual carried out a deadly attack — this time on a small church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The attack on the church24 left 27 people dead including an unborn child and at least 20 more injured. Had it not been for a law-abiding citizen with a gun — a former NRA instructor25 with his own AR-1526, no less — there no doubt would have been more killed. Stephen Willeford armed himself and engaged the killer, shooting him twice and, along with fellow neighbor Johnnie Lagendorff, pursuing the perp when he fled. Unfortunately, as with every mass shooting incident in our nation, the anti-gun crowd gets amped up about the need for tougher gun laws. So let’s look at the facts of the case. Barack Obama and Joe Biden each tweeted27 their condolences but couldn’t leave it at that. They both used this heinous criminal act to renew a call for stricter gun control measures without even knowing any of the details about the murderer. Many other prominent Democrats chimed in as well, each with their own nonsense on demanding stricter gun control28 while blaming everyone except the killer himself. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) crassly blamed his own colleagues in Congress for failing to do anything: “As my colleagues go to sleep tonight, they need to think about whether the political support of the gun industry is worth the blood that flows endlessly onto the floors of American churches, elementary schools, movie theaters, and city streets.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) added, “How many more people must die at churches or concerts or schools before we stop letting the @NRA control this country’s gun policies?” Actually, senator, there’s this thing called the Constitution that controls our nation’s gun policies. And we’ll remind Democrats again that the perpetrator was stopped only when an NRA instructor with a gun stopped him. Fortunately, President Donald Trump, most Republicans and local lawmakers realize that guns aren’t the problem. As we have stated so many times before, guns are tools that can be used for good when in the hands of law-abiding citizens. Evil people can also use guns to carry out their malicious intentions. But when evil people use anything other than a gun, such as a truck29, a knife, or any other object, there’s hardly ever a leftist cry to ban such items. Further, murdering someone is a crime. Yet leftists have an agenda of statist control over everything — thus they cry out for stricter gun laws. In the case of Devin Kelley, the Texas perpetrator, there were already laws in place30 to prevent him from owning a firearm. But in this case, the laws and the system failed. Kelley was an Air Force veteran court-martialed in 2012 for domestic violence against his then-wife and child. Kelley even intentionally fractured his infant stepson’s skull. He was sentenced to 12 months confinement and a reduction in rank, and he received a bad-conduct discharge. That discharge didn’t disqualify him from owning a firearm; his court-martial along with his domestic violence charge did. Yet somehow Kelley purchased several firearms from a store in San Antonio. Whenever anyone purchases a firearm from a licensed gun dealer, the prospective customer completes a form including questions about prior convictions. Kelley fraudulently answered at least two questions. Once the form is filled out it is entered into the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which also includes the National Criminal Information Check (NCIC) database. If a person is flagged, no sale of a firearm can be legally made. Kelley should have been flagged and denied sale, but he was not. How did this happen? Air Force officials reportedly failed31 to report Kelley’s domestic assault charge to the NCIC database, which under federal law it is required to do. In other words, human error enabled Kelley to purchase firearms. Recall that a similar thing happened with the deranged racist who murdered nine people in Charleston two years ago. Human error in data entry left a hole in his background, too, with tragic results. So there is already a system in place to prevent this kind of person from owning a firearm, but the bureaucratic process failed. The terrible fact is no such laws are going to prevent every evil guy bent on murder. In any case, the fact remains that leftists’ call for more gun control is a losing argument32 and for the foreseeable future this will remain the case. It’s estimated that there are more than 300 million guns owned by Americans. If guns were really the problem, there wouldn’t be many people remaining. Not that polling should ever dictate policy on constitutional rights, but the public has grown increasingly skeptical of gun control over the years, despite (or is it because of) Democrats’ increasingly shrill rhetoric. The right to keep and bear arms is a natural right that most Americans cherish and don’t want to lose. Most leftists understand that an outright confiscation of firearms would spark a bloody resistance, so instead they seek to restrict in smaller increments the liberties of law-abiding citizens. But what part of “shall not be infringed” do they not understand? He followed Kelley at 95 m.p.h. down the highway, until the perpetrator ran off the road. … Willeford and Langendorff would have been justified in considering their work done when the shooter left the scene of his massacre. They would have been justified in considering it done when he crashed his vehicle. They instead were prepared for another gunfight in the cause of incapacitating him themselves. … Any gun control measure that is sweeping enough to make a dent in the country’s gun stock and render gun ownership difficult enough to, at the margins, keep firearms out of the hands of psychopaths will inevitably affect law-abiding people as well. In places like rural Texas that would rightly be considered a serious imposition. Without a gun, if something goes wrong, the only option is sitting and waiting for the authorities to show up.
