THE FOUNDATION

“Energy in the executive is a leading character in the definition of good government. It is essential to the protection of the community against foreign attacks; it is not less essential to the steady administration of the laws; to the protection of property against those irregular and high-handed combinations which sometimes interrupt the ordinary course of justice; to the security of liberty against the enterprises and assaults of ambition, of faction, and of anarchy.” —Alexander Hamilton (1788.)

IN BRIEF

The Real Problem With the Diversity Visa Lottery Program1

By Thomas Gallatin

“Diversity lottery. Sounds nice. It’s not nice. It’s not good. It hasn’t been good. We’ve been against it,” Donald Trump stated. “We have to get much tougher. We have to get much smarter. And we have to get much less politically correct,” he continued. On Wednesday, Trump singled out Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for his role in propping up the State Department program known as the Diversity Visa Lottery, which allowed the New York City terrorist2 to enter the country seven years ago. Trump tweeted, “We are fighting hard for Merit Based immigration, no more Democrat Lottery Systems. We must get MUCH tougher (and smarter).”

Also on Wednesday, several senators took up Trump’s call to end the Diversity Visa Lottery, created in 1990. “We ought to be more focused and more merit-oriented when it comes to our immigration program. There’s always going to have to be a combination of family-based immigration, but we also ought to reward people who we want to see come to this country and help us grow our economy,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) stated. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) echoed his comments, saying, “Count me in for wanting to eliminate the lottery system for merit-based immigration.”

Even Democrats were scrambling to distance themselves from a law they have long defended. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) sought to shift blame to Republicans for killing “comprehensive” immigration reform: “Of course we would [be open to eliminating the program]. Let me just tell you something: That was part of the [comprehensive immigration] reform [bill].” Schumer, who had his hand in creating the DV program in 1990, blamed Trump for politicizing the terror attack while other top House Democrats blasted Trump for seeking “to further his anti-immigration agenda.” Democrats never have a problem politicizing gun control after a shooting.

Back in 2010, there were clear warnings that the Diversity Visa Lottery was dangerous due to the fact that it essentially created a loophole through which individuals from terror-watch-list countries could gain entry into the U.S. Several lawmakers at the time warned that the program posed a “serious national threat.” As far back as 2004, the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General deputy inspector testified that the “program contains significant vulnerabilities to national security as hostile intelligence officers, criminals and terrorists attempt to use it to enter the United States as permanent residents.”

Yet over the years Democrats have repeatedly defended the program. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) in 2007 argued, “The Diversity Visa Program is the chance for many people of color around the world to immigrate to the United States and pursue the same American dream that many of the ancestors of the members [of Congress] here were able to pursue.” In 2006, Schumer himself said, “This is an excellent program, and nobody has said it has done a bad job. It’s small; only about 50,000 visas a year… As I ride my bike around New York City on the weekends, I see what immigrants do for America and this program has dramatically helped.” The part about riding bikes is grotesquely ironic given the fact that the truck-driving terrorist plowed over bike-riding victims.

What is clear is that America’s immigration system needs serious reform. Too much of the current system has been designed by Democrats for the sole purpose of building their own party base rather than to establish an immigration system that prioritizes the rights and concerns of American citizens. Too often the idea expressed by lawmakers is that non-citizens have a right to emigrate to America. No non-citizen has a right to live, work or emigrate to the U.S. But every American has a right to demand that our government protect us and our interests first and foremost. The focus of government officials should not be promoting virtues of diversity; instead, they should be committed to protecting and defending the constitutional freedoms and rights of American citizens above all other considerations.

Pruitt Puts an End to EPA Adviser Conflicts of Interest3

By Jordan Candler

There is another significant change happening at the Environmental Protection Agency. Administrator Scott Pruitt on Tuesday abolished a rule through which officials were permitted to serve on EPA boards while at the same time receiving EPA grants. It’s a policy that never should have been allowed in the first place, especially considering how much cash flow was involved.

According to The Daily Signal4, “In the past three years, members of the Science Advisory Board, the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, and the Board of Scientific Counselors received about $77 million in direct EPA grants while serving, according to agency calculations.” This obviously created, at the least, temptation and, even more likely, corruption.

The new rule5 stipulates, “Members shall be independent from EPA, which shall include a requirement that no member of an EPA federal advisory committee be currently in receipt of EPA grants.” As Pruitt wisely put it, “Whatever science comes out of EPA shouldn’t be political science. From this day forward, EPA advisory committee members will be financially independent from the agency.” This helps not only to contain conflicts of interests but also injects egalitarianism.

According to The Washington Free Beacon6, “Earlier this year the agency broadened its application process, soliciting applications from underrepresented states. … The new pool of appointments, which will be announced in the coming week, will include members from EPA regions 6, 7, and 8. Those regions, which cover Dallas, Kansas City, and Denver, previously did not include a single representative on CASAC [the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee].” Moreover, “Pruitt said current members who are asked to continue their service and have received EPA grants would have to forgo grant funding if they stay on the board.”

Pruitt continues to do laudable work at the EPA. He’s pushing for the elimination of the Clean Power Plan, and he’s stopped another egregious antic — sue and settle7. Stated simply: The agency is being turned on its head. No wonder Time magazine just published an inflammatory profile8 on Pruitt, deriding his involvement with “The Wrecking Crew.” In truth, he’s cleaning up an agency that was wrecked by the Barack Obama administration.

FEATURED ANALYSIS
Tinseltown Abides Pedophiles25

By Arnold Ahlert

“Harvey we all knew about u — I hope more men come forward” —Rosie O'Donnell26, reacting to allegations27 that actor Kevin Spacey made sexual advances toward actor Anthony Rapp when Rapp was 14

Like a bad movie sequel, Hollywood is enduring its second major sex scandal in recent weeks. And exactly like the Harvey Weinstein saga28, legions of these self-aggrandizing, self-righteous phonies have long known about — and excused — sexual predation by their fellow celebrities. Unlike the Weinstein saga, that abhorrent “tolerance” countenanced pedophilia.

Decent Americans might be of two minds regarding the revelations about Weinstein, in that many of the women he abused were adults who chose to remain silent in exchange for fame and fortune. No doubt fear was an integral part of the equation, which is why most of these actresses have largely been excused for maintaining their silence, with the principle exceptions being made for those who asserted their after-the-fact feminist bona fides.

America is willing to forgive silence in the face of fear. Rank hypocrisy? Not so much.

By contrast, Hollywood closing ranks around child molesters is indefensible. Yet that’s precisely what it has done for years. “It’s a very taboo subject,” insists29 actor/director Alex Winter, who alleges he was sexually abused as a pre-teen child actor. “I don’t know of any boys in any pocket of the entertainment industry that do not encounter some form of predatory behavior.”

So why not speak out? Maybe victims are taking their cue from former ‘80s child star Corey Feldman, who has long accused30 the industry of abiding pedophiles who abused him and his friend Corey Haim. Haim died of a drug overdose in 2010 at age 38, and Feldman attributes his death to the inability to cope with his molestation.

A 2013 exchange with Barbara Walters, a woman treated with wholly unwarranted reverence, is indicative. Responding to Feldman’s claims she asks, “Are you saying that they’re pedophiles?” “Yes,” Feldman responds. “You’re damaging an entire industry!” Walters scolds.

Inadvertently, Walters’ use of the word “industry” may prove prophetic. Radar Online claims31 to know the identity of Haim’s abuser, stating “he is one of the most recognizable faces in the industry.” Radar further insists multiple sources claim he is the “kingpin” of a child sex ring that abused both Feldman and Haim when they were children.

So why not name names? “I would love to name names,” Feldman contends. “I’d love to be the first to do it. But unfortunately California — conveniently enough — has a statute of limitations that prevents that from happening.”

Last year, California removed32 its 10-year statute of limitations for sex crimes. The impetus behind the passage of the Justice for Victims Act33 was the alleged serial depredations of Bill Cosby and the reality that only one out of his 50 victims was still able to pursue prosecution.

Critics of the change insisted allowing more time for prosecution increases the odds innocent people will be adversely affected. “Human memory is fleeting, nobody’s memory gets better with time, eye-witness testimony is unreliable, alibis can become impossible to prove, records are thrown away, witnesses may move or die,” stated criminal defense attorney Troy W. Slaten. “All it takes is an accusation, [and] anyone can accuse anyone of anything.”

Slaten has a point, but Winters counters: “There’s nothing more terrifying to someone who is holding on to that history [of molestation] and that PTSD than to finally come forward and make those claims only to not be accepted.”

As for memory, Spacey’s is apparently fleeting. He claims he has no recollection of his encounter with Rapp but if it did happen, “I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”

Two other accusers34 have stepped forward, and Spacey himself reveals there may be others. And in a transparent attempt at deflection, Spacey announced he has chosen “to live as a gay man.”

The LGBT community isn’t buying the sleight of hand. “It is deeply sad and troubling that this is how Kevin Spacey has chosen to come out,” stated fellow “out” actor Zachary Quinto, who further characterized the move as “a calculated manipulation.” Writer Broderick Greer agreed, asserting, “Deeply, deeply unwise framing of this Kevin Spacey story, especially as it relates to the conflation of sexual orientation and sexual assault.”

If the shoe fits…

Yet why shouldn’t Spacey attempt to deflect, given the despicable nature of the sewer he and his fellow celebrities inhabit? The sewer where convicted child abuser Brian Peck continues to work “on projects geared toward children, including a popular Disney Channel series,” The Washington Times reports35.

He isn’t alone. Director and screenwriter Victor Salva continues to work in the industry as well, despite a 1988 conviction for having sex with a 12-year-old boy whom he had cast in one of his movies.

Why wouldn’t accused molester Spacey expect similar dispensation?

“We haven’t heard anything from Hollywood, the big studios, about reforms to protect children,” stated Gabe Hoffman, co-producer of “An Open Secret,” a 2015 documentary that addresses Hollywood pedophilia. “At one point, shouldn’t we be asking, ‘What are these guys doing about it?’”

Despite a $1 million budget and direction by Oscar-nominated Amy Berg, the film struggled to find a distributor. Moreover, three film festivals in London, Toronto and Los Angeles reneged on initial agreements to screen it.

Unfortunately for the pedophiles, it is now available on Vimeo36 free of charge, and it has acquired more than two million views.

Feldman’s wife, Courtney Anne Mitchell, has created an Indiegogo site37 aimed at raising $10 million for a documentary on the subject, and Feldman claims38 he will name at least six people involved. He asserts the funds are needed to pay for litigation and security necessitated by the revelations.

Is Feldman credible? That remains to be seen, but he shouldn’t be going it alone. Former child actor Elijah Wood has insisted39 Tinseltown is rife with “organized” child abuse. “Westworld” actress Evan Rachel Wood agrees. “This will be the next dam to break,” she tweeted40.

It will be a dam broken by the public’s “disgust with those in power who know and do nothing, who knew and still deny knowing,” asserts26 columnist Maureen Callahan.

In addition to the public, a “deeply troubled” Media Rights Capital and Netflix have indefinitely suspended41 production of Spacey’s show, “House of Cards.”

American leftists have justified much of their agenda as something they were doing “for the children.” Hollywood vipers have been doing it to the children, yet many of those same leftists have abided the monsters in their midst.

Does it get more “deplorable” than that?

OPINION IN BRIEF

Cal Thomas: “Special counsel Robert Mueller and Congress should investigate [Uranium One], along with the role of the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign (and the earlier Republican role) in creating an anti-Trump dossier that has been shown to be a fraud and yet was used to justify the appointment of Mueller. If the reason for Mueller’s appointment is fraudulent, how can it be said that his investigation, which includes staff attorneys who made donations to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, is not tainted? Among the many problems with this investigation is that it has no legal, subject or monetary limits. If Mueller and his associates are unable to prove collusion with the Russians, one can count on them coming up with something else. … These seemingly endless accusations and investigations are what so much of the country hates about Washington, the ‘DC’ that increasingly seems to stand for ‘dysfunctional city.’ No matter which party controls government, the other party does all it can, by whatever means, to undermine those elected. This behavior solves no problems. It is only about grabbing and holding onto power. Given the many moving parts in the Mueller probe and the loss of focus on the primary reason for it, the government may have a difficult time proving its case in court. But with unlimited funds and a staff of lawyers who have Democratic affiliations, you can bet they will try to make more than a ham sandwich out of it.”
