Title: Scripture Riddles
Post by: Whitehorse on December 29, 2003, 07:47:42 PM
I like making scripture riddles, and here's one I came up with today while I was doing my work. Since I was studying the apocolypse [sp?], that is what I had to work with, so nobody freak out because the riddle is apocolyptic. Just get some herbal tea or whatever and enjoy.

Ready?

Title: Censership
Difficulty: Medium

From the altar of heaven, a great smokey fire
A mountain of this grows higher and higher.
Now into a censer, cast down to the earth
To purge away evil, hatred and mirth.

What am I and what do I represent?

Ready...GO!

Fire and brimstone.

The wrath of God.

It's a good guess, but it isn't it.

Is it the censer filled with fire of the altar, cast down to the earth Revelation 8:5?

Moses' sister's name is Miriam.

His wife's name is Zipporah.

What's his mother's name?

"We" are the smoke of the incense representing the prayers of the saints?

Who is the "you", or the "we".

And, is Jochebed correct?

Title: Re:Scripture Riddles
Post by: Whitehorse on January 01, 2004, 01:50:34 AM
Hehe! You asked the riddle, and you're asking Cris what the right answer is? Hehe! I love it.

BTW, When we tell riddles, we personify the answer. It's kind of a tradition, although I don't know why. It's kind of like, why do ballerinas wear pink? Hey-another riddle!

Title: Re:Scripture Riddles
Post by: cris on January 01, 2004, 12:36:41 PM

Symphony,

I answered Whitehorse's question to the riddle, "What am I and what do I represent?"  My answer was, "you are the smoke of the incense representing the prayers of the saints."  "You" or "we" refers to the riddle itself.

Yes, Jochebed is the correct name of the mother of Moses - Ex. 6:20 and Num. 26:59, at least that's what my bible says.

cris

Title: Re:Scripture Riddles
Post by: Symphony on January 01, 2004, 04:14:51 PM
...we personify the answer     ??

Oh, you mean we place it in the first person?

Well, I was wondering who the "we" or the "you" was, assuming that it is the same as "saints" at the end  of the sentence.   But I was just making sure.

So "we", that is, Christians collectively, are the "smoke of the incense", I'm gathering.  Or, perhaps more accurately, our prayersare the smoke of the incense.

Thank you.  Yes, and thank you, Chris, for yours on Jochebed.  I didn't realize that.  (I thot it was unknown).

We need another good riddle there.

(I know, I know, "Why is Symphony so stupid"?)  :-X

Whitehorse,

I had problems trying to get into CU last night also.  It kept saying error in advertising or something.  Then I got in and couldn't get to next page.  Tried with a different computer and the same thing happened so I figured the site itself was having problems.

Ok, Noah's Ark --- 411 days or maybe 371 days, depending on whether you count in the first 40 days into the first 150 days.

Ok, so what's the answer?

Hey Symphony, how long does it take for you to get your bible?   ;D

Title: Re:Scripture Riddles
Post by: cris on January 03, 2004, 08:08:20 PM

You could be right.  I got my info from a book titled, Who's Who in the Bible.

Briefly, it rained for 40 days and nights.  Landscape was obliterated.  Waters covered the highest mountains.  Flood remained at full strength for 150 days then subsided.  It took another 150 days for the water to drop low enough for the ark to rest upon Ararat.  40 days passed before Noah released a raven which did not return.  A week later he released a dove which came back.  The next week he released a dove which returned with an olive branch in its mouth.  The following week he released a dove which didn't return.

Ok here's another------

In what state is the Statue of Liberty?

cris

Title: Re:Scripture Riddles
Post by: Whitehorse on January 03, 2004, 08:25:52 PM
New York. Liberty Island is at the entrance of New York Harbor.

Title: Re:Scripture Riddles
Post by: cris on January 03, 2004, 09:09:17 PM

Few people realize that the Statue of Liberty actually stands in New Jersey.  Bedloe's Island (renamed Liberty Island in 1956) sits in New York Harbor but is within Jersey City's waters.  It is only because of an 1834 compact that New York has any control over the island at all.  Sales taxes from the statue's concessions go to Albany, not to Trenton, as do non federal income taxes paid by the few families who live there.  The statue is a beacon, only because of New Jersey, since the island's power comes from a Jersey City utility.

Here's a hint: what do the particular throne, ephod, and city have in common?

Title: Re:Scripture Riddles
Post by: cris on January 09, 2004, 09:40:44 PM

I can't figure it out.

I thought Zion, faith, promise, Mt. of Olives, chair and of course the Wizard of Oz-------my brain's a stone!   I'm being stupid now----it's a frequency with me!

Obviously, the precious stones are emerald, ruby and  sapphire.   They were in the priestly garment.  Christ is our precious stone.

I know when you reveal the answer, I'm going to feel dumb.  I know it's really simple.

You're right-it's the sapphire. It is in the ephod, it is the what the throne of God is made of, and it is in the foundation of the new Jerusalem! I'll get the proof texts tomorrow; every time I connect to crosswalk.com to get it I crash.

Yes!  The seed - the word.  See the parable about the sower.

I guess I made that one too easy.  I wanted to be subtle, but its hard to make clues that don't give it away.  The real clue I think is ...

If I'm not taken away,
I'll multiply, by thirtyfold, or sixty, or a hundred.

Mar 4:14  The sower soweth the word.
Mar 4:15  And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
Mar 4:16  And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
Mar 4:17  And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.
Mar 4:18  And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
Mar 4:19  And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
Mar 4:20  And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

Nice try Whitehorse.  The mustard seed is close.  You guys are too good!  I'll have to come up with harder riddles...lol

Grace and Peace!

OK, I see whitehorse has asked for one also.

The second line is also important.

From years long past, we prod and prod  (OT)

Me and my twin, belong to God
from years long past, we prod and prod.
We serve the Lord so faithfully,
because the Lord hath said it would be.
From our gaze of truth, no man can hide,

Could it be---REBORN?  That doesn't parallel the O and NT's though.

I'm thinking "gaze of truth" means the bible and "only once satisfied" is the debt Christ paid, once and for all.

I'm stumped.  This is a difficult one.

Me and my twin, belong to God (represent 2 characters of God)
from years long past, we prod and prod. (symbolic)

We serve the Lord so faithfully, (ceremonially and character wise)

because the Lord hath said it would be. (commanded -cant

say too much more here as it would give away too much)

From our gaze of truth, no man can hide, (ceremonially and spiritually)

Only once was satisfied (Cris got this part right)

They would be seen in the traditional ceremony.

Tabernacle?  Nah!  What the heck is it?  Burnt offerings - peace offerings - shed blood - atonement.  I just can't figure out this one.

Oh--is it the goats? One gets set free, the other is sacrificed...what they represent fulfilled in Christ...doing the will of God. I wonder of the plodding is metaphorical, though. But the idea that no one can escape thir gaze. That's the part that throws me.

No, but its probably as close as you've been.

I believe what makes this one so hard is the double sided meaning of the "twins".  They are a literal thing, and represent a spiritual thing.

Heres another clue...

They were made by man, as instructed by God.

Exo 25:18  And thou shalt make two cherubims [the twins] of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.

The Ark and temple that Moses was instructed to build (as well as the temple in Jerusalem later), is an earthy replica of the temple in heaven.  Cherubs in the bible are usually associated with the holiness of God, and guardians and servants.  These Cherubims that God instructed Moses to build, and placed hovering over the ark, appear to represent Gods Righteousness and Justice.  They each gaze towards the mercy seat and into the ark, as if viewing 3 evidences of mans sin.  Inside the ark was a golden pot which contained tablets of the covenant, the staff of Aaron, and Manna (Heb 9:4), seemingly to represent mans willingness to break Gods law, rejection of Gods leadership, and rejection of Gods gifts and blessings.   Once a year the high priest would enter into the holy of holies in the temple, kill an innocent animal which was commanded by God, and sprinkle his blood over the mercy seat, so that its blood would hide or cover mans sins, thus satisfying Gods unwavering Holiness or "Righteousness and Justice".  This was a shadow of things to come.

Heb 9:11  But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Gods Holiness was once and for all satisfied!  What an awesome analogy!

Gods justice for sin demands the shedding of blood.

Heb 9:22  And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

And of course, for there to be true righteous blood shed in the eyes of God (on the mercy seat for man), someone holy, and without sin, had to shed his blood.  No man could ever do this except Jesus who lived a sinless life.  Gods chosen sacrifice.

Joh 1:36  And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

1Jo 2:1  My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous

Heb 4:13  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Heb 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens (Gods holy of holies), Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Heb 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Isn't that a beautiful parallel in the old testiment leading up to Gods ultimate sacrifice in order to satisfy Gods Righteousness and Justice?  Gods word is truly awesome!  I get excited everytime I talk about this topic.

The riddle once again.

Me and my twin, belong to God =the two cherubims

from years long past, we prod and prod. = shown in the OT, the cherubs gazing onto the mercy seat and the evidence of mans sinful nature.

We serve the Lord so faithfully, = This part is admittantly obscure, but it fit with the ryhm..lol  The did serve symbolically as Gods holiness in the temple of God.

because the Lord hath said it would be. = Gods covenant with man to forgive sins and satisfy Gods perfect righteousness and justice.

From our gaze of truth, no man can hide, = No man can hide from the gaze of Gods holiness as represented by the cherubims.

Only once was satisfied = Only Jesus blood sprinkled on the mercy seat in Gods holy of holies satisfied once and for all Gods Righteousness and Justice.

I had not planned on this riddle becoming a bible lesson...lol, but I think it adds learning to the fun of searching out the answers.  Hopefully I didn't make it too hard.  Maybe I should try some easier ones.

Grace and Peace!

I was said to be likened, to the kingdom of heaven,
In the NT I'm mentioned this many times.... 1+7.
Men have toiled with me from past to present,

Though made by hands of sinful men,

The thing in the riddle is not a religious thing, althought Jesus said it was like the kingdom of heaven on at least one occassion.

Good 'nough...

Daniel 2:34, 35 "Thou didst look, until that stone tare itself away, not by the aid of hands, and smote the image upon its feet, which were of iron and clay - and they were broken in pieces...but the stone that smote the image became a mighty rock, and filled all the land."

Dan. 2:44 "And in the days of those kings shall the God of heavens set up a kingdom which to the ages shall not be destroyed, and the kingdom to another people shall not be left - it shall break in pieces and make an end of all these kingdoms, but itself shall stand to ages."

There is a very similar vision revealed to Ezra (Salathiel) in Esdras, concerning a stone that was hewn not by human hand, and became a mountain that lasted forever after defeating all kingdoms. In this instance it is called "Zion".

Cris guessed if Whitehorse.  Its a net.  The riddle refers to the story of where the desciples were casting their nets and not catching anything, and Jesus insisted they try again.  He later said that a net was like the kingdom of heaven when cast into the sea, and gathered every kind.

Most deffinately hard.

I was there at the crowning of kings. - either future (revelation) or past....maybe both!

I bring to light, dark, hidden things. - again sounding all knowing or all powerful.

I soothe the head - this one throws me.  What soothes the head?

Give light to the eyes - physical or spiritual eyes?  miracles?

I divvy the guests
Foolish from wise. - Only thing I think of here is the Father

IF its not God the FATHER, then it must be .......

TRUTH, or RIGHTEOUSNESS?  not sure if that soothes the head though.

Yes!! Michael got it-the annswer is oil.

It was used in the annointing of the kings, it was poured over the head both to annoint and as a grace to special visitors to the home, it was burned in lams to give light, and it is the thing that the wise virgns at the wedding had kept, while the foolish ones did not keep a ready supply for their lamps.

Good job!

I thought I would try to come up with one on my own, let me know what you think.

During my time you shall not sew.
By using me the sickness goes.
Ashes join to bear our grief.
The soldiers cast for my relief.
The dogs threaten this effect.
Untempered walls do not protect.
Now a veil can be crossed.
For I am the sign of a priesthood lost.

What am I?

Yes!  A tear or rend.  All the verses I used for each verse of the poem/riddle use rend or rent but they mean tear.

Good work.

During my time you shall not sew.
(time to rend and a time to sew)
By using me the sickness goes.
(the priest rends the leprosy from the garment)
Ashes join to bear our grief.
(sack cloth ashes and rending of garments)
The soldiers cast for my relief.
(soldiers cast lots to avoid rending Christ's robe)
The dogs threaten this effect.
(dogs and pigs may turn and rend you in rejection of the pearls)
Untempered walls do not protect.
Now a veil can be crossed.
   (the temple veil was rent)
For I am the sign of a priesthood lost.
(the old testament priest were instructed to never rend their robe)
(the high priest did though when questioning Jesus)

Thanks, Michael! That was a great puzzle. :)

Here's a new riddle while I think of one that is actually scriptural:

Elmo knew the happiness of his third birthday would  be in jeopardy when he received the results of his long division test. So he decided to stuff it into his coat pocket until after the party, knowing his parents would be furious at his D-! After all, he wasn't particularly gifted, but neither was he behind. How is this possible?

This one's gonna take some thought.  The only thing I can think of is a sword but it really doesn't make sense.  Then I thot of the bible but that didn't make sense either.  And, last but not least, the name brand bar of soap that floats (well, it could ease a man's care, somewhat  :-\).

An axe head/iron?  ???

2 Kings 6:5   But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.
6   And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.

Redeemed by a lamb or pulled from the pit

I describe Issachar and that’s not the half of it

I bore wood for the offering, and money that was planted

I turned from the angel and mocked the prophet who ranted

Eighty silver pieces my head was deemed worth

But my jaw took thousands away from their birth

I rest on the Sabbath and as a stray must be brought back

Through my offspring, the king, a ride did not lack

What am I?

Donkey.

She stopped and lay down in the road when an angel was sent to destroy her master, and spoke to him in human voice.

Joseph hid a gold cup in Benjamin's sacks (planted money??) and a donkey bore firewood.

Samson killed Philistines with the jawbone of one.

Jesus rode one into Jerusalem.

No work is allowed on Sabbath, so the Jews would not let their animals labor.

Issachar was described as a wild donkey.

Jesus used the parable of a donkey fallen into a pit, to see if the Pharisees would truly do no work at all on the Sabbath - if they would help their neighbor's donkey out, or leave it in the hole.

Think part of a menorah, part of a vine.

Oh. Branches?

At first I thought the purging happened to the object, or throught the object, which is why i chose rod at forst. Almonds grew on the staff, and yet it can be used for purging as in threshing. But now I think purging happens to the person to keep this from happening to the branches. As in, "iam the vine, you are the branches." And there are branches on a Mennorah, and the fruit comes through the branches, but it does not belong to the branches.

But it's still just a guess and I could be wrong! :)

My riddle solving abilities are right up (down) there with my singing voice - deep and cracked.  (I'm a very poor riddle solver.)

But... from your hint, 'night' seems to work...???

Here's one - not so much of a riddle - more of a test of your OT knowledge:
He was the grandson of a king and grandfather of a prophet; the only (known) OT prophet of royal lineage...
Name that person – (and the King - and the prophet)!

ML,
If you give me another hint about yours I'll think about it more.

Here's a little help with my question - the person is Gedaliah.  Now - if you can't name the King and the Prophet your search engine doesn't work too well...  :)

FYI - My questions are aimed more at making people turn a few Bible pages - (as in study) - rather than having to use actual brain power.  I find turning the pages of the Bible to be wonderful "exercise", so I encourage it however I can.   ;D

Each one of my lines come from one or more scripture verses that contain the term the riddle is looking for so if you do a search on the clues you should be able to link the clues together into a chain that points to the term, though I do take some liberties to make the lines rhyme.

Oh by the way I hid the term I am looking for in the explanation above.   ;D

Pro 1:8  My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
Pro 1:9  For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

(2Pe 2:4)  For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

(Psa 73:6)  Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

Angels cause me to fall, but fallen angels I hide

(Act 12:7)  And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

(Jud 1:6)  And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

One for the oracle and two for the priesthood

(1Ki 6:21)  So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.

(Exo 28:14)  And two chains of pure gold at the ends; of wreathen work shalt thou make them, and fasten the wreathen chains to the ouches.

An oblation for God, an atonement for soul's good

(Num 31:50)  We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.

I fit Kings and camels; Apostles, Fathers and demons

(Psa 149:8)  To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;

(Jdg 8:26)  And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.

(Gen 41:42)  And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

(Luk 8:29)  (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

For the hope of Israel I followed Paul through the seasons

(Act 28:20)  For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

What am I?
