Title: Communion
Post by: StrikeToWin on May 13, 2008, 10:13:16 PM
How often as a Christian should I take communion?  Growing up Southern Baptist, the Lord's Supper was observed only a handful of times every year and was a very special occasion.  Since joining a Christian church, communion is every week which goes against every fiber of my being.  I realize it is just a difference in upbringing but it seems that partaking of communion weekly would seem to make it more of a ritual than a special time to reflect upon my relationship with God.

In Acts 20:7 we see that the disciples came together to "break bread" on the first day of the week which is what it is frequently called by them. In 1Co 11 we see the scripture that is normally read during communion. Note in verse 25 it says "as oft as ye drink it". Acts 2:46 shows us that the Apostles did so "from house to house".

Brothers,

Let me add a little question for thought on this issue to see what you think.

Isn't Communion really a relationship with CHRIST?

If so, what does this relationship consist of? Wouldn't a proper and close relationship involve a fellowship with CHRIST several times every day?

What about prayer and Bible Study several times every day? Aren't these things worthy to be considered fellowship and Communion with CHRIST? So, I guess it depends on what someone thinks "Communion" or the "Lord's Supper" actually are, where they must be performed, and whether they must be in the form of a ritualized ceremony. If the real purpose is "Remembrance" and "Fellowship", CHRIST would be worthy of much more than just once a week or once a day unless the Christian was in a coma.

THOUGHTS?

I think Communion is a result of our relationship with Christ. I believe that we can do it everyday, but we have to be careful that it does not become a ritual. Need to remember why we are doing and have grateful heart thanking God and Jesus for His broken body and the blood he shad for us.

AMEN KATHY!

I firmly believe that everything we do for GOD should be from hearts of love and appreciation for what HE'S already done for us. So, this would exclude things considered as a duty - rather of what we want to do because we Love HIM.

Christians should put things into perspective and know:  1)  We belong to HIM as purchased possessions - purchased by his Blood on the CROSS;  2)  All good things that we have are given to us by HIM, so everything already belongs to HIM.

Our love, appreciation, and good works of any kind should be natural because HE is the core of our lives, our LIGHT, and our Eternal HOPE. Realistically, our relationship and communion with HIM should be night and day - every day.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Christian Quotes 103 -
There are no great things and small things with God
"He made all the stars - the Bear, Orion, the Pleiades,
and the constellations of the southern sky." Job 9:9
There are no great things and small things with God.
He who guides the constellations in their magnificent
marchings, watches the sparrow's fall.
"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of
them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your
Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all
numbered." Matthew 10:29-30

In my opinion, when communion is done too often it soon loses its meaning and significance. The Baptist churches I've attended usually do it on the first Sunday of each month. It is a special time of reflecting on one's life and where we stand before God.

When did the Apostles hold communion?

No matter how much or how little it is done it should hold the same meaning each and every time. We should never become lukewarm or cold in anything that we do for the Lord no matter how many times we do so.

Hello Jon-Marc,

It all depends on how communion is viewed. On one side of the coin it's an appointment with GOD - a ritual and ceremony. On the other side of the coin it's a way of life and daily walking in the SPIRIT. Christians have the HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD living in our hearts. GOD has informed us in many ways that we don't have to make an appointment with HIM to enjoy HIS company, have fellowship with HIM, worship HIM, praise HIM, and walk with HIM. Many beautiful things happened at the CROSS, and this is part of it. The quality and quantity of our relationship with GOD depends on us, even though we are purchased possessions of GOD and belong to HIM 24/7. We might also ask ourselves a question, "What does GOD want?" We should also expand this question, "Does GOD want duty and rituals, or does GOD want real love and appreciation?"

Love In Christ,
Tom

God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He

and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
