Title: TV and Profanity
Post by: Jon-Marc on February 09, 2008, 11:04:17 AM
Because of vulgar language, (especially the use of God's name in vain) I find very little worth watching on TV. I have started watching so many shows/movies just to turn it off a few minutes when a main character would use God's name in vain. That doesn't add anything to my enjoyment of watching it. The constant use of SOB (the words--not the letters) is also a turn-off for me. It gets a bit too excessive. I love Sci Fi, but I've also turned off what I thought would be a good movie when God's name was used in vain. That's why I spend much of my time in several Christian Web sites where I hopefully won't read any of that filthy, useless language that is only used by people with a weak mind and a limited vocabulary.

This is one of the reasons I don't watch much TV.

TV vulgarity is disgusting and one of the reasons I limit TV viewing as well.

I am very careful what I watch, especially with my daughter.

I can only assume that Hollywood thinks they are adding something of value with the ever increasing bad language and improper scenes. I would hope and pray that we all turn garbage like this OFF.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I hope and pray that you won't ever read anything like that here. We try pretty hard to keep Christians Unite clean and safe for Christian family use - including children.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Aside from God's name being used in Vain, I do not like women who do not dress the way a woman or young lady should. It is applalling

We're happy to have you with us, and I look forward to having fellowship with you.

Ephesians 1:18-23 NASB I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

I agree with all ya all.  I have found since staying at the mission and my TV in storage for now, that I'm not missing it at all.  I listening to praise music and reading book after book.  I have the complete Bible on tape and instead of going to sleep with the TV on, I fall asleep with the Word being read to me!  I have slept so well since starting that, I can't begin to tell ya!
Praise God!

What I find completely off about all of it is that clean shows like Monk do well for Hollywood....if they do well...then make more like it.  It is not simply the characters that make Monk a good show...it is because they do not have to go down the road of filthy language, sex, and violence to make the show good.
Psych is another that is clean and funny.  There are several out there that are newer shows that are good... but yet Hollywood just does not catch on and bring more to the table...

Just saw an advertisement for a new show the other day.... Swingtown...about time in the 70's and you can figure out what the underlying theme is by the title.
FX Channel has another raunch show in Lipstick Jungle, sleezy ways women make it up the corporate ladder, let me rephrase that because it is not only women.

The list of raunch and filth could go on and on.

Hello Brother Jerry and All,

One of the things I don't understand about all this is the raving success of clean family programming and movies. From everything I read, there is HUGE success with just about every clean show that Christian families will watch or pay to go see. On the other side of the coin, there appears to be considerable risk and possible loss on the dirty and inappropriate shows that Christian families WILL NOT WATCH OR PAY TO GO SEE. So, where is the common sense in all of this?

My wife and I rarely go to any movies, but we have been to some with my grandchildren. The theaters were sold out with standing room only, but the shows were COMPLETELY CLEAN and appropriate for an entire Christian family to see. The producers had to make money because they provided what a large portion of the population wants: COMPLETELY CLEAN AND WHOLESOME ENTERTAINMENT. I know that the same is true for television, so why can't Hollywood get the message that the vast majority of us don't want any kind of filth, garbage, and dirty talking?

For television, the only way I know to get their attention is to quit buying the products of the advertisers. It's easier for the movie theaters - just leave the theaters EMPTY.
