Title: A place to chat
Post by: David_james on January 14, 2008, 04:40:05 PM
Could I make an off site chat? I would make all mods and some members a mod in chat. Also, only registered users that have at least 20 posts can come to chat. This will stop trolls. So could I?

Hello Brother David,

Brother David, you could do something like this without asking anyone for permission. You're talking about private services that wouldn't have anything to do with Christians Unite. This would be like your private email account. You decide what you do or don't do with these private things - not Christians Unite. As a result, Christians Unite doesn't have any responsibilities with these private things. If I understand correctly, account numbers or identifiers for these private chat services are much like a private email account. Each person is supposed to be able to choose who has access to their private information. I know that some people make their chat accounts almost public, but they have some way later to decide who they will connect to.

I think there are several "Chat" services that already make something like this possible. In fact, I think there are "Chat" programs that can interact with more than one chat service at the same time. I can't remember the name of it, but I had a chat program at one time that was supposed to interact with all of them at the same time. I only used it for a very short period of time. It was too quick and confusing for me, and there were security issues almost impossible to address.

Brother, I see a chat service listed through Gmail, and I am a Gmail user. I've never used the Gmail chat, so I really have no idea what it would be like. The programs I use regularly all have font sizes that I can make large enough to see, and they are all designed to use at whatever speed I need to use. That would be pretty slow quite often. As far as I know, I don't have any private services set to use except my email, and you already have access to that any time you wish.

Brother, I've had concerns about private chat in the past, and I'll try to explain them.

1 - Someone acting like me and getting me into some kind of trouble or hurting my testimony for CHRIST in some way.

2 - Someone hurting the LORD'S work at Christians Unite because of some accusation about me doing something. Currently, the only private thing I have is Email, and that is heavily documented. As far as I know, it would be easy catching someone pretending to be me in Email, and I could easily prove what I did or didn't do. With my Email account. I really don't know what can be done with a chat account. I would never want to be in a position that harmed Christians Unite or my personal testimony for CHRIST. So, I haven't exposed myself to these kinds of problems. I can't be accused of doing something wrong with something I don't have.

3 - Brother, I can't think of anything I need to do that can't be done through either Christians Unite or email. Both are about as secure as anyone can get on the Internet, and I can fairly easily prove what I have done or not done. If there are doubts, I can keep copies of everything.

Brother, I know that some folk won't understand some of the things I've said above. Further, I'm sure that I don't understand all of the issues involved in Chat. I do know that we don't have "Chat" or "Private Mail" on Christians Unite because of not being able to be accountable for all of the abuses that could take place and did take place. Some folks even thought that some of the abuses came from Christians Unite or were authorized by Christians Unite. So, that possibility was ended and any doubt was removed. Users could use their own private methods, and the ability to defame Christians Unite or hurt the testimony of Christians Unite was closed. Further, some users were hurt or abused from the "Private Mail", so that was ended also. The final result was each individual user being able to choose what private services they would receive or not receive, and those private services would NOT be through Christians Unite.

Now, let's get back to your original question. You can do what you're talking about. It's simply a matter of who wants to participate with you. As for me, I'll have to look at the chat issues again and pray about things. I'll also have to look at what Chat programs are available for me to use, what they do, and how they might function for me. I might or might not participate, and they would be for the issues I've already mentioned. It certainly wouldn't have anything to do with you. Brother David, I love you as a Brother in CHRIST already and always will. That's why you already have my private email address that you are always welcome to use any time you wish.

Love In Christ,
Tom

I have made the chat. I made it so that I have to activate new members. That way I can make sure they are who they are. The rules are over there. http://cuchat.forumotion.com/index.htm
Hope everyone will join.
Questions and comments and suggestions are welcomed.
