Hollywood veterans helping churches impact culture through movies

A film producer and actor says it's his desire to bring quality, full-length feature movies to churches as an outreach tool.

David White, a founding member of Outreach Cinema, says churches have used quality movies in the past to impact their communities for Christ, and it is his organization's goal to help churches continue to connect with people in their community through that medium. To accomplish that goal, Outreach Cinema offers marketing campaigns for participating churches.

"Basically, what we want to do is bring movie nights back to the church. You may recall in the [19]70s and [19]80s, movie nights were pretty prevalent in the church with 16-mm projection systems -- and they kind of went out when the VCR came in [during] the mid 80s," he says. "But last year, churches spent about a half-billion dollars in audio visual equipment. The church is realizing we live in a sight-and-sound generation today, and the church is realizing the impact of the power of the media."

The marketing campaign includes flyers, posters, media kits for radio and television, and study materials for Bible groups. The first movie Outreach Cinema will offer to churches is called The Wager. The film stars Randy Travis as an actor who is blacklisted for his beliefs.
