Christian authors strive to dispel 'myth' of feminism

A Christian author is debunking feminism in a new book that encourages women to embrace God-given roles as helpers to their husbands and nurturers to their children.

In the new book Passionate Housewives Desperate for God (The Vision Forum, October 2007), Stacy McDonald and Jennie Chancey offer a counter-cultural view of feminism. McDonald says feminism has been presented to the American culture as biblical, but she says it actually goes against scripture.

"There's a lot of 'me-first' teachings going on ... teachings that focus on self," McDonald observes. "And it's like we have to have this time to ourselves alone, without our children, or we're unhealthy somehow. A lot of times we don't accept the scriptural need, what we see in Scripture, to deny our flesh and die to self," she adds.

According to McDonald, many feminist concepts have even crept into some Christian literature and are being taught in churches throughout America, as well. She contends that Christians must rely on God's Word for guidance regarding the roles of husbands and wives.

"We have to be discerning; we have to compare everything that we hear with the Word of God," cautions the author, "and too many times, instead of doing that, we just do what's popular -- or we think, 'Oh, well, that must be right, 'cause there's so many other people doing it.'" The result, she says, is that instead of comparing their roles to the timeless truth of scripture, Christians compare them to "what the latest self-help guru is teaching."

McDonald says she co-authored the book, in part, to help shatter the myths found in popular programs such as Desperate Housewives.
