Title: Visit to the Zoo
Post by: Joey on August 30, 2007, 03:49:37 PM
We went to the zoo a couple of weeks ago and took lots of photos. Here are a small selection of them. Hopefully, some of the younger members might like to see these  :)

Even us older members!  :)  Great photos....I love going to the zoo.  What zoo was this?  Ours in L.A. has/is under going alot of renovations....should be fun getting our gorillas back.  The elephants are getting a new habitat, too.

The zoo where we visited is called Whipsnade Zoo and is in the county of Bedfordshire, England. It is probably the 2nd most important zoo in the UK because of its breeding program. What i like about this zoo is the amount of space the zoo has for its animals.

Golden retriever adopts tiger cubs at zoo
Three cubs at Kansas zoo abandoned by their mother Monday

CANEY, Kan. - A dog at a southeast Kansas zoo has adopted three tiger cubs abandoned by their mother. Safari Zoological Park owner Tom Harvey said the tiger cubs were born Sunday, but the mother had problems with them.

A day later, the mother stopped caring for them. Harvey said the cubs were wandering around, trying to find their birth mother, who wouldn't pay attention to them. That's when the cubs were put in the care of a golden retriever, Harvey said.

Harvey said it's unusual for dogs to care for tiger cubs, but it does happen. He said he has seen reports of pigs nursing cubs in China, and he actually got the golden retriever after his wife saw television accounts of dogs caring for tiger cubs.

Puppies take about the same amount of time as tiger cubs to develop, and Harvey said the adoptive mother just recently weaned her own puppies.

"The timing couldn't have been any better," he said.

No difference for dog
The mother doesn't know the difference, Harvey said. He said the adopted mother licks, cleans and feeds the cubs.

The Safari Zoological Park is a licensed facility open since 1989 and specializes in endangered species.

It has leopards, lions, cougars, baboons, ring-tailed lemurs, bears and other animals. It currently has seven white tigers and two orange tigers.

Because white tigers are inbred from the first specimen found more than a half-century ago, they are not as genetically stable as orange tigers.

The zoo's previous litter of white tiger cubs was born April 23, although one of the three has since gone to a private zoo near Oklahoma City.

Always nice to hear and see these stories on the tv news.

I haven't gotten to our zoo in awhile....hope to eventually get there again to see the improvements.

Penguin Granted Norwegian Knighthood
He's been an honorary member of Norway's elite King's Guard since 1972. And on Friday, Nils Olav, a penguin, was knighted in a special ceremony at the Edinburgh Zoo.

Nils Olav has had a number of big days in his military career. In his over 35 years of service, the three-foot-tall soldier has steadily climbed through the ranks of Norway's elite King's Guard and even became honorary colonel in chief in 2005.

But Friday's honor is certain to eclipse them all. Nils Olav became Sir Nils Olav in a morning ceremony watched by several hundred onlookers and attended by 130 guardsmen. The occasion took place at the Edinburgh Zoo -- because, as it happens, Norway's newest knight is a penguin.

"You, as a penguin, in every way qualify to receive the honor and dignity of knighthood," said a citation from King Harald V of Norway, which was read out during the ceremony. The king's statement also said that the country was "well-satisfied with the loyalty, courage and good endowments of our trusted and well-beloved Nils Olav."

Sir Olav himself seemed unflappable for most of the ceremony, waddling past the sharply turned out honor guard, occasionally stopping for a closer look at their shiny uniforms. He did, however, seem unimpressed when the sword came out to tap him on the shoulders and quickly waddled in the opposite direction.

The Norwegian guardsmen adopted an Edinburgh penguin as their mascot in 1972, because they often toured the zoo when in Scotland performing at the Military Tattoo, an annual military music festival. The first Nils Olav, named after King Olav V, Norway's regent at the time, died in the 1980s with a young penguin inheriting his name and rank.

Sir Nils Olav wore his colonel badge tied to his flipper during the Friday ceremony. He will soon receive a new one to reflect his elevated status.
