Title: What is everyone reading?
Post by: jeffkst on August 19, 2007, 07:56:06 PM
Just out of curiosity, what are you reading?

I've just finished Can We Trust the Gospels? By Mark D. Roberts
It was  a good read, he blew Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus right out of the water.

Hi jeffkst,

Welcome to Christians Unite.

No, I haven't read it but then I have never had any doubts as to the reliability of the scriptures.  ;)

Not reading anything in particular right now.  I go through phases, I guess.  :)  Sometimes I read a devotional book....picked up My Utmost for His Highest last night.

Hi Pastor Roger,
That's great, but I think it is still good to know why you believe the scriptures are reliable and also to be able to help out those who are doubting

I have no problem with that either.

I like to read books about Muslims that have come to know Christ as their Savior.  The Torn Veil is my favorite of these books....I've read it twice and highly recommend it.  The woman is a descendant of Mohammed and was dramatically healed by Christ.  It also gives alot of background of growing up as a Muslim.    The other book I read is I Dared to Call Him Father.

Right now I'm reading the best book I've ever read, The Holy Bible.

Of course, that is the most important book for us to read.  :)

Yesterday I also read the first chapter of Let Us Draw Nigh by Andrew Murray about the high priestly work of Christ for us.

I am reading the "Left Behind" series. I have just recently had them given to me as a gift. I have read the first (3) books and I am looking forward to reading all (16) of them. At least, I think there are (16) books to this series.

Brother Tom,

I'd like to make some suggestions for you since you are a new Christian. First, I love a free Bible Study Package called e-Sword, and I think it would help you with Bible Studies and get you grounded in GOD'S WORD. There's an amazing assortment of excellent study aids and a choice of numerous Bibles completely free with no strings attached. You can read more about it on page one of the area "Computers and Software". There are a few new things that cost money, but you really don't need them. Some of the best materials for Bible Study are FREE.

I don't know much about the Left Behind Series, but I've heard some people say that it's good. I spend nearly all of my time with the Bible. I highly recommend the Epistles of Paul to give you a strong foundation as a Christian. Paul's writing is the core of the GOSPEL OF THE GRACE OF GOD, and I never tire of reading them. Ephesians and Romans might give you a good start and give you an appetite for more. I know that the real strength for a Christian is GOD'S WORD, and nothing else is even close. There isn't anything wrong with reading other books, but I recommend that you spend the vast majority of your time with the Bible.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Tom,

Thanks so much for the advice! I will be looking into the coomputer and software forum to see what I can find there. I have only recently begun to really read & study the Bible. I have started with the book of John.

May God bless you,

Tom

They are a pretty good series, better then 99% (non-Christian) out on the market. The authors do use Biblical prophecy to make the story real. I only dis-agree with how they timed the story. Over all I would rate the series a 9.5 out of 10.

Yes there are 16 books to the series kestrel.

Hi Jeffskt and welcome!

I think this would be a great topic if we could get some folks on here!  I was reading Purpose Driven Life for the second time in 5 years until I learned some things from Pastor Roger and the others about Rick Warren and his philosophies so I put it down.  I am dying to read Rod Parsley's "Politically Incorrect" and may go this week to see what they want for it.  It's still in hard back so we'll see.  I'd also like to read Bill O'Rielly's book, Culture Warrior so might get that one instead.
Stay tuned and I'll let you know.  What are you planning on reading next?

Well there's mud in your eye for ya!  I clicked on this and instead of taking me to the most recent post it took me to the first.  So I guess there are a few people reading on here!  I would love to hear more about it and what you think of what you've read.
I read 11 or 12 of the left behind series.  They were good but each book seemed to drag on a bit after awhile.
Anyone like Frank Peretti?

There are two books I've been wanting to read.
I want to read Rod Parsley's "Politically Incorrect" and "Culture Warrior" by Bill O'Reilly

I was just loaned a copy of Bill O'Reilly's "Culture Warrior"!  I can't wait to get started on it and will probably take the weekend to read it through so that I can give it back.

I'll let you know how it is!

Has anyone else read it?

Right at the moment I'm been reading, "The History of Route 66."

If you ever plan to motor west,
Travel my way take, the highway that's the best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Well it winds from Chicago to LA
Over two-thousand miles all the way.

Now you go through St. Louie, Joplin, Missouri
And Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty.
You'll see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff Arizona, don't forget Winona,
Kingsman, Barstow, San Bernadino

Won't you get hip to this kindly tip
When you make that California trip.

Well I didn't get to finish "Culture Warriors" by Bill O'Rielly as I had borrow it from a co-worker at Microsoft and wanted to give it back before I left that job.

I just bought "The Power of Body Language" by Tonya Reiman.  You may have seen her on the "O'Rielly Factor".  I bought it because I thought it might help me in doing case management with the women at the mission.  However, I'm very disappointed to find out that Ms. Reiman is an evolutionist.  :(
I think she has some very good insights and I will gleen what I can from that, and it really is quite interesting, and ignore the other parts about our ancestors being apes.  Good Grief.

Title: Re: What is everyone reading?
Post by: Soldier4Christ on December 07, 2007, 10:55:20 AM
I've seen her on the O'Rielly Factor a number of times giving a report on what different peoples body language was supposed to mean. I had to disagree with her in a number of instances. Having been a councillor for many years as a Navy Chief and in the capacity as a pastor working with parents and children, body language came as an important subject for me. It is important to remember that her background and beliefs do effect her opinions on what certain body movements mean. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying to not read it just to keep those things in mind.

Sister, I am sure that you will do fine as much of this relies on listening to others, not so much what they say but rather how they say it and what they are doing as well as their responses to you. It will become second nature for you if it hasn't already.

Thanks Pastor Roger.  I have been told many times that I was very perceptive and I've mentioned before that I've had decernment since I was very young.  I was hoping to fine tune that.
I agree with you though that I have heard her say some things that I also disagreed with, so I will just pick and choose what I take away from the book.  ;)

I noticed that some of the preceding posts mentioned  Bill O'Reilly's latest,  Culture Warrior.  I just got it for Christmas, and though I enjoyed it a lot, one thing he said astonished me.  On page 177 of the paperback,  he refers to Saint Paul as  'a  Roman warrior and pagan activist before conversion'.   What?????  Surely Paul was a Jewish tentmaker, and a Pharisee.

Title: Re: What is everyone reading?
Post by: Soldier4Christ on December 28, 2007, 01:30:44 AM
Bill O'Reilly is far from being theologian. I watch him on Fox News quite frequently and have noticed that he has made numerous such mistakes. Some of them have been pointed out to him by viewers and he has come back later on occasion and apologized, admitting his mistake.

Title: Re: What is everyone reading?
Post by: carlotta on December 28, 2007, 01:55:12 AM
I am no theologian either, but to call Paul a 'pagan'!  That surely demonstrates a minimal knowledge of the Bible.  But the Lord uses people in His own way, and O'Reilly has been great for fighting the anti-Christian forces.
I was wondering if  O'Reilly was confusing Paul with some other NT figure, but I can't think of anyone that could be described as 'a Roman warrior and pagan activist'.  Anyone have any ideas?

Title: Re: What is everyone reading?
Post by: Soldier4Christ on December 28, 2007, 02:33:30 AM
I just think that he did not realize that Paul was not only Roman but also a Jew. I have heard many other Christians that have said the same thing. With the thought of him being only a Roman it would be understandable that he would think of him as a pagan. Then again there are those that consider the Pharisees as being pagans.

I just finished reading Left Behind: Kingdom Come. It was good but doesn't match what I think the Millennium Kingdom will be like.

Here is what I believe:
There will be no mistrust. Everyone will know who is a believer and who
There will be no unbelievers in the kingdom itself.
Satan is to be released at end of millennium and will be out for alot more than a few days.

Perhaps people who grew up with pictures or movie portrayals of Paul in a sort of toga and with sandals confused him with being a Roman, when he was actually a Greek-speaking Jew who happened to be a citizen of the Roman Empire.  I don't see how anyone could think that the Pharisees were pagans, surely a pagan is an idol-worshiper and polytheist.
One of the most remarkable things about the conversion of Paul is that he was a devout Jew who followed all 613 commandments, but the Lord completely changed him in an instant.  If he had been a pagan, the conversion would not have been such an amazing one, and also a pagan could never have quoted from the Hebrew scriptures as Paul does when he explains the Messianic role of Jesus.

Hi David, yes there will be sinners in the Millennium Kingdom.

Isaiah 65:20 There shall no more be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who dies prematurely; for the child shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner who dies when only a hundred years old shall be [thought only a child, cut off because he is] accursed.

Those who survived the Tribulation are saints. So the first few years of the Millennium will be sin free, with Christ on the throne and all citizens of the earth believers.

As newborns come along, obviously, they will be sinners in need of forgiveness and salvation from our Lord. I believe the scriptural prophecy indicate that anyone who does not trust Christ by the age of one hundred will be accursed (die). When Satan is again loosed for a season at the end of the Millennium, despite that the earth is massively populated with more believers than have ever lived, there will still be those who live for themselves and constitute the army of the rebellion against God.

Only heaven itself will finally be populated with only believers.

I'm thinking that Pastor Roger said this with "tongue in cheek".  As far as a pagan being an idol-worshipper, then Pharisees would certainly fit that catagory in that they worshipped "self" in that they were prideful.
In Christ,

Yes, it was said with "tongue in cheek". I still haven't found a smiley that will indicate that.  ;)

Not only did they worship self they also held the traditions of men in higher regard than they did God Himself.

I just finished reading the most moving book.  It fact no since I read "To Kill a Mockingbird" in school has a book touched me so emotionally and spiritually too!  It's called:  Same Kind of Different As Me.  It's about Denver Moore who was a homeless man and Ron and Debbie Hall who started volunteering at a homeless shelter in Texas.  Now that doesn't sound too interesting does it?  Let me tell you if read this book, you won't be the same and you won't forget it.  I'm included just a bit of Denver's bio here to see it that will hook ya!

DENVER MOORE'S BIOGRAPHY

Denver was born in rural Louisiana in January 1937, and after several tragic events went to live on a plantation in Red River Parish with his Uncle James and Aunt Ethel, who were share croppers.

Sometime around 1960, he hopped a freight train and began a life as a homeless drifter until 1966 when a judge awarded him a 10 year contract for hard labor at the Louisiana State School of Fools, aka, Angola Prison!

According to Denver, he went in a man and left a man and received a standing ovation from prisoners in the yard as he walked out of there in 1976.  For the next 22 years he was homeless on the streets of Fort Worth, Texas.  However, there were a few times after a brush with the law, he'd ride the rails visiting cities and hobo jungles across America, sampling regional cuisine like Vienna sausage with fellow passengers.

In 1998, "He never met Miss Debbie," Miss Debbie met him and his life was changed forever.

Today, he is an artist, public speaker, and volunteer for homeless causes.  In 2006, as evidence of the complete turn around of his life, the citizens of Fort Worth honored him as "Philanthropist of the Year" for his work with homeless people at the Union Gospel Mission.

I have just started:  God Works the Night Shift.  Also a fabulous book!

I'm reading and studying The Treasury of David by Charles Spurgeon. It's incredibly beautiful. I've had it for years and never read it. It's wonderful to study the Psalms, one at a time and enjoy depth and beauty of the Psalms.

By the way, it's public domain and available free on many Christian sites. If you use the free eSword Bible Study Program, The Treasury of David is one of the free modules. I'm almost sure that the same is true for numerous other Bible Study programs.

I keep putting this out there because I think it is an important and informative book.  If you haven't read it yet, you can get a copy at your library.

It's: The Islamic Antichrist by Joel Richardson

I have read it twice and finally bought my own copy so that I could share it with family and friends.

Wow!  Nothing new here since I was last here!  Are you all not reading or just not sharing, or not reading anything worth sharing? LOL!

I am now reading, "God's War on Terror" by Walid Shobat w/ Joel Rosenberg.  Excellent information although some, but not all, I knew from reading "The Islamic AntiChrist".

If you have read either of these books, I would love to hear from you!

I've been reading a new commentary for my e-Sword Bible Study Program called IVP Bible Background. It changes with each portion of Scripture and talks about background, culture, customs, historical perspective, and more about the portion of Scripture involved. I find it fascinating and would highly recommend it for someone who wants to know more when studying a portion of Scripture.

Sister Yvette, I've heard about The Islamic Antichrist by Joel Richardson and seen it highly recommended. It sounds like something I might want to read. The only thing left is for me to get a copy and read it. Thanks for your recommendation.
