Title: Anyone here like bluegrass/gospel?
Post by: Terrapin Hill on August 22, 2006, 11:07:51 PM
I'm not really talking about the older Stanley Bros. or Bill Monroe stuff, although they are easily updated with new arrangements. What's got my attention over the last couple years are groups like Alison Krause and Union Station, Blue Highway, Mountain Heart, The Isaacs..... the list could go on and on. Don't be dismissive if old time bluegrass just isn't your style. Many of the younger bluegrassers are stretching the boundaries and taking new directions in their music. There are also some wonderfull lyricists in this genre like Ron Block of Union Station and Shaun Lane of Blue Highway. If you haven't checked any of this music out, one good example is the "Wondrous Love" cd by Blue Highway. It's a mixture of updated standards and original compositions that I just can't seem to get tired of. I can't imagine a more breathtakingly beautifull rendition of "The Old Rugged Cross" than the one played as a mostly solo instrumental on dobro on this album.
If you're already into this kind of gospel music, please recommend a few cd's to me. I'm always looking for new songs to play in church and around the house on my guitar. If you haven't heard any of this, give it a try. It just might be a blessing to ya,

God bless,  Bill

Hi Bill, I don't think I have any bluegrass gospel music, I do have a lot of old country gospel though. I love music by the Gaithers, I have some Elvis gospel, Vern Jackson, the Hinsons and quite a few others. I like all Gospel and Christian music with the exception of rap. I know there are a lot of Christian Rap artists that appeal to the teenagers, I just don;t like rap in any way shape or form.  ;D

Hi Bill,

I'm not familiar with any of the groups that you have mentioned. I do like the old style Applachian Folk music which is the roots of Bluegrass. My grandmother was from the back hills of the N. Carolina Applachians. I can still hear here singing to all of us kids many of the old folk songs from the Appalachians.

Hi Lori,

Welcome to Christians Unite. I hope you understand if we don't email anything to you. With all the scams going on in the internet it usually is not a good idea to do that.

The first song you mentioned sounds like "Coolin Water" by Doug & Melvin Williams

My soul was sinking in a world of sin, but grace and mercy took me in. Took my feet out of the miry clay and placed them on a rock to stay.
Oh what a relief it was when God rescued me. He loosed my chains that had me bound and then He set me free.

[Chorus:]
It felt like (cooling water)
Cooling water (cooling water)
It felt just like (cooling water)
Cooling water (cooling water, cooling water from grandma's well)

[Verse:]
Sleepless nights and so much pain. Couldn't see no sunshine, nothing but rain. (and God said) Weeping may endure for a night, but in the morning, it will be alright.
Oh what a relief it was when God rescued me. He loosed the chains that had me bound and then He set me free.

[Chorus]

[Vamp:]
It felt like (cooling water)
Cooling water (cooling water) repeat vamp

They took me down (in the water)
Cooling water (cooling water) repeat vamp

Cooling water (cooling water) repeat vamp

Cooling water from grandma's well

Sometimes It Takes a Storm
Jessica King

When your waters are so troubled you don't think you count at all
Waves may seem like mountains when your boat is oh so small
But somewhere past the clouds waits a new day to begin
Sometimes it takes a storm to calm the storm within

Chorus:
Sometimes it takes a storm to know you need a shelter
When the anchors in your life disappear without a trace
Sometimes the wind will rage before you sail calm waters
Sometimes it takes a storm to find a hiding place

They were drifting in the darkness, the sea was all around
They cried out to the Master, please save us or we'll drown
Jesus heard their cries and mercy stilled the winds
Sometimes it takes a storm to see the Son again

Repeat chorus

Sometimes the wind will rage before you sail calm waters
Lord thank you for the storm for I've found my hiding place
Oh thank you for the storms Lord You are my hiding place

Hello Lori,

Welcome to Christians Unite.

I would share the comments of Pastor Roger. The Internet is full of scams and con games, and that's just one of the reasons why most users of forums keep their emails hidden. Further, we discourage and warn our members to keep their emails private and share it only with family members, friends, and known or trusted entities.

I would suggest that you use Google to search for the information that you need. If you can't find what you need with Google, it will be almost impossible to find.

Love In Christ,
Tom

On Saturday June 1, Channel "RFD TV" Bill Gaither had a program titled "Bluegrass Homecoming" Absolutly the greatest. I  bought 2 DVD's and they were wonderfull.
I love Bluegrass because it's original and still sung as it was in the church's of Kentucky, Tenn and Virginia. I also like country, but what they have done with it the last 10 years or so is terrible. You have probably figured out all ready that I'm an old guy and your right. I can honestly say that the good old days were exactly that. They were not as complicated or busy as we are now. Also we were more driven to family and church. Thats all for now. Jerry

Hello Brother Jerry,

It's nice to see you back on the forum. I understand and agree, but I am also an older person. YES - I'll take the good old days that were much more simple. I'll also be blunt and say that our societies were much more moral and livable than they are now. The moral fabric of everything around us is eroding and unraveling pretty quickly now. More and more, it's beginning to look like the last days of this age of Grace. JESUS CHRIST might come for us soon.

YES - I love the music you are talking about. I don't know if I saw the special you talked about, but I've seen several Gaither Home Coming shows that I really enjoyed.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Philippians 3:20-21 NASB  For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;  who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.

Bluegrass has it's roots in the music of the old hill folk primarily from the Appalachian Mountains. My grandmother was from deep in hills of the N. Carolina portion of the Appalachians. I can remember her singing many a beautiful song to all of us kids while sitting around of an evening. I really wish that I had realized the importance of writing down those songs as I can't remember but a few of them and I probably have the words messed up on those few. My grandmother was no nightingale but when she started singing of Jesus there wasn't a sound made but by her and it was a beautiful sound.

Here is one that I remember her singing. It is a fairly popular one in the Bluegrass group now.

Jesus answers my prayers

When my life is in despair
Jesus answers my prayers
When I call on him he's there
Jesus answers my prayers

When trouble and strife cloud my life
When no one else seems to care
I fall on my knees
And pray to Him there
And Jesus answers my prayers

He lifts my burdens, stills my fears
Jesus answers my prayers
He gives me comfort, dries my tears
Jesus answers my prayers

Here is another one but it has slightly different wording than I remember grandma singing. I think that's because grandma made it more of a personal message to us kids.

Jesus will save your soul

As I go along I'm singing this song
My soul is so glad and free
If I sing this song, I'll never go wrong
For Jesus will care for me

Yes, Jesus will save your soul
He'll make you as pure as gold
    Then some beautiful day
    With him you shall stay
    Where sorrows are never told

He pleads day by day don't turn him away
Hark to that sweet voice you hear
Place him close to your side, in his love abide
Let Jesus always stand near

If you would live right for Jesus tonight
Turn from your pathway of sin
Some day by his throne he'll make it your home
Where happiness never ends

AMEN!

Thanks for sharing with us.

We will probably never know how many songs have been sung to honor and praise the LORD.

I was just laughing a little bit and thought I would make a shocking statement for the benefit of some of our younger readers. There were times without an Internet, television, radio, etc.

Many beautiful things originated with just plain folks, and some things were passed down in families or communities. Loving our LORD and wanting to sing about HIM are natural and part of a Christian's spirit. We see the same thing in the Holy Bible. Psalms and David are a beautiful example. We have every reason to be making a joyful noise unto the LORD.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Ephesians 5:19-20 NASB  speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;
