Title: On False Prophets...
Post by: Seven Tides on September 01, 2003, 08:35:09 PM
In these modern times, and ever since the establishment of the Body of
Christ after Jesus' ascension to heaven, there have been a numerous amount of false prophets. They are very common in these times, and they
certainly were rampant in the times of the early christians. It seems, as the
old saying goes, they're a dime a dozen.

The Bible warns several times about false prophets. We must be very careful when dealing with those types, for they are very deceiving, for they
have slick tongues. Let's see where scripture opens up to the world of
false prophets.

In Matthew, it warns us that we must be cautious of false prophets who come in deceptive inwardly, but outwardly, come very innocently.

Matthew 7:15
15 "Beware of false prophets, which come
to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."

After that, the book of Matthew indicates to us that we will know those who
are false by their fruits ( works, faith, etc.)

Matthew 7:16-20
16 "Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do
men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?"
17 "Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit."
18 "A good tree cannot bringeth forth evil
fruit, neither can a corrupt fruit bringeth forth good fruit."
19 "Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire."
20 "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."

Now, we will know them by their "fruits". This means that those who are
christian, and who are really well guided by the Lord Jesus Christ, will be able to tell who is false and who is true. This is called discernment.

1 John 4:1 states that we should try the spirits.

1 John 4:1
1 "Beloved, believe not every spirit,
but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false
prophet are gone out into the world."

This also most likely ties in with the prophecies foretold by Jesus Christ in Matthew 24. In Matthew 24, several verses correspond with the topic at hand. Jesus warns us there that many false prophets will be sent out into
the world nearing the time of the end, and the Day of the Lord.

Matthew 24:11,24
11 "And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many."
24 "For there shall arise false Christs, and
false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch
that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."

In Peter, it also warns that there will be many false prophets and false teachers, who will come to spread heresies, and will claim absurd things.

2 Peter 2:1-2
1 "But there were false prophets also
among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who
privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord
that bought them
, and bring upon themselves swift destruction."
2 "And many shall follow their pernicious
ways: by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of."

Brethen, hear me now. Be careful, and be watchful of the times. Don't let
one of Satan's minions deceive you with a slick tongue, with a tongue of fire. Always glory in the Lord, and ask the Lord for discernment of any and all those who come claiming they are prophets of God. Let not yourself be-
come those who will hear not the truth, those who have itching ears.

Peace brethen, and may the Lord Jesus Christ bless you richly. :)

Seven,
Can you tell us what the "testing" of the spirit would be? As mentioned in 1 John 4:1 states that we should try the spirits.

I believe its written somewhere that we should ask who is Jesus Christ. If they can't say Lord, Son of God  they are a false prophet? Have you read that somewhere? When I was a stay at home mom used to watch lots of those talk shows, sometimes they have so called,  psychics, mediums, fortune tellers or what ever they call themsleves..........lol. I always wondered why someone didn't ask them who they worshiped, or who gave them this gift, who was Jesus Christ or something. BUt no the audience would set there with there mouth gapping open amazed that he or she could tell them there SS # or something.

Good and sound teaching. I really enjoyed your compiling of scripture and comments.

What struck me most was the very first scripture with this word, hit me hard - BEWARE.

Greek -  blepo, blep'-o; a prim. verb; to look at (lit. or fig.):--behold, beware, lie, look (on, to), perceive, regard, see, sight, take heed. .

We must pay attention to who and what is being said today under the umbrella of "anointed" christian doctrine!   Look at these scriptures:

Mat 7:15   Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Mat 10:17     But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

Mat 16:6     Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Mark 12:38     And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,

Luke 12:15     And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Luke 20:46     Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

Acts 13:40,41     Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;
Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

Phil 3:2     Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.

Col 2:8    Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

2 Pet 3:17     Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Seven,
Well if you mean that we need to test them, and line up what they say with the word yes. I most defiantly agree. I know this is something we are suppose to do, but I have to admit it's hard to do, no you don't need to get them in a corner and shoot 101 questions at them (althougth someday that me be needed) but it easy enough when they make preidctions and they don't come true. some modern day preachers who claim this gift of prophcey, they seem to really love the Lord, but there prophecies dont come true. I use to love to watch preach then they'd go out there with some crazy prediction and it falls. Since it doesn't happen, they are false prophet in sheeps clothing, its just like the devil to give you 100 truths just to give you one lie.
Mostly I am concerned about what who says who is a prophet? What is the mearsuring Rod? Benny Hinn for example. Does he proclaim himself a prophet, or is that some hype from his followers. His given some way out there prophecies, and they didn't come true. SO that is really my question. I understand to measure them against the word, but what is a prophet, his prediction didn't happen,,,,,,,,boooo BUT is he redeemable, or is he forever doom? and was he a self appointed prophet or one by proxy I thinks that makes sense?

Musiclover, (I know you addressed Seven, hope you don't mind)
I love to read your postings, you are so sincere, I can tell you are very committed to truth and righteousness.  Just want to comment on the trying of the spirits.  There are so many today promoting their own ministries, they name their ministries after themselves but say Jesus is doing all the works, but much of what is going on is FAKE!  They must repent and stop duping the people to get money. Money has become too important and not the word nor the work of witnessing to the lost ourselves. We should be committed to work in our own field, in our own neighborhoods and within a church body that teaches the truth.  If the Lord wants you to know the future, read his word, and he will speak to your heart that way or by true preaching.  He will confirm all.  Below scriptures are a sample of testing the spirits:

1 John 5:7 ,8    For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Gal 5:22-26    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24  And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26  Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Gal 6:1  Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
2  Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Eph. 5:9   (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

John 10:1  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
2  But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

The false prophet wants all the benefits of the high and lofty name, but doesn’t suffer for the brethren.

Jesus bless you,

Im yet to have a single individual announce to me that he is a prophet and it turned out to be true. And in my pentecostal background  is not an unusual occurance.

I would go for the salt when anyone calls himself a prophet.

Didn't Jesus Christ fulfill all prophecy? If any one prophesies today is it not by relating to others the good news of Jesus Christ?
Would a false prophet be one testyfying to something other than the gospel of Christ?

What a fantastic and great discussion. Thank you Seven.
There is one scripture that should go here also.
"Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.
For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but hteir own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple." [Romans 16.17,18].

As for testing the spirits, I can only give my own experience.
Early in my Christian life, someone gave me an Edgar Cayce book. I was amazed at how much He spoke about Jesus. But something in me was not comfortable. So I went to the Lord and said, "Father, I have to know if these teachings are from You. Please show me."
First He showed me this scripture..."Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God."
[1 John 4.15].
Then that night He gave me a dream. I was facing Edgar Cayce, who was sitting behind a desk. (I had seen his picture in a book). I said to him, "can you tell me that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?" He said to me, "Jesus Christ is the gon of sod." Still in the dream, I said outloud, "he can't say it." And a voice in my ear said, "no, he can't." Then I woke up.God had answered my prayer about weather this man's teaching were of Him or not. But please understand; all this was for a reason.
God had allowed me to get caught up in this man's teaching so that He could show me the truth, and so that from that day on I would have a hatred for false teachings. I did not know then that He would one day call me to teach, but this was all part of His teaching me truth that I might one day teach.

God Wrote His Ten COMMANDMENT LAW IN TABLES OF STONE & BY THE NEW BIRTH PUT THEM IN THE FLESHY TABLES OF THE BORN AGAIN HEART! (see 2 Cor. 3:3)

Holy men of God Wrote the 66 books of the Masters Word! Yet, each used his own descriptive word for understanding the revealed Holy Spirits Inspiration. That is why Matt. Mark, Luke & John are not exact copies.

There are two TEST of Truth from the Word of God. Isa. 8:20 tells us that the TRUTH will never go differently than that of the Law of God, or the 'testimony' of His 66 books. Otherwise there is NO LIGHT IN THEM! (the person, persons, denominations or whatever)

The next TEST [is once again] seen in the ONLY PORTION THAT GOD HIMSELF WROTE, HIS TEN COMMANDMENTS. Read 1 John 2:4. John under inspiration states that ANYONE who says that they 'know' HIM, (Love or believe) and [keepeth NOT HIS COMMANDMENTS, IS A LIAR AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN HIM]".

And NO one need be blind as to what these Commandments are that he is talking about! Notice John's Words in the last battle fought with the saved of God:

"And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the [remnant] of her seed, [WHICH KEEP THE *COMMANDMENTS OF GOD] AND [HAVE THE *TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST]."
Two parts once again seen for testing! LAW OF GOD, & THE 66 BOOKS OF THE WORD, THAT IS THE  'TESTIMONY'  OF OUR MASTER.

Seven,
Can you tell us what the "testing" of the spirit would be? As mentioned in 1 John 4:1 states that we should try the spirits.

I believe its written somewhere that we should ask who is Jesus Christ. If they can't say Lord, Son of God  they are a false prophet? Have you read that somewhere? When I was a stay at home mom used to watch lots of those talk shows, sometimes they have so called,  psychics, mediums, fortune tellers or what ever they call themsleves..........lol. I always wondered why someone didn't ask them who they worshiped, or who gave them this gift, who was Jesus Christ or something. BUt no the audience would set there with there
(removed for content)

What does it mean to try the spirits? Well, try usually
means judge or discern, and we are to do that by seeing if the one who claims to be a prophet's message lines up with
scripture ( the Bible ). This means that it should be accurate
with scripture.

So, we compare the message with the Bible, to see if the
one who claims to be a prophet is actually of God. If it does
not line up with scripture, it is considered heresy. Do you get
the picture Musicllover?

I hope so...
May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you richly.  :)

Ex 20:16
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
KJV

Ex 20:16 is one of His ten commandments

Seems to me an intentional miss quote would be a false witness.  I wonder how we would hold up to the scrutiny of a search of this forum?

Hi, 'i' caught that word 'intentional'. A little book before me is called 'The Mount Of Blessings' notice a couple of thoughts in part only?

"These words condem all those meaningless phrases and expletives that border on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the evasion of truth, the flattering phrases, the exaggerations, ... They teach that no one who tries to appear what he is not, or whose words do not convey the real sentiment of the heart, can be called truthful."

O'yes the author was Ellen G. White

To Ollie's question about prophets and prophesies.
A "prophet" is not defined as one who speaks about things to come, about the future.
A prophet is one who speaks the words that God has given him to speak. It is not always about things to come. Many times a prophet spoke to Israel, form God, about her wicked ways, etc. And we are told in 1 Cor. 14.1 "Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy."
When in a church someone speaks in tongues, and this is interpreted, this is considered prophesy, because then it is God speaking to the church.
God bless this wonderful forum.  Roy.
