Title: Good Thing God's Not a Free Agent!
Post by: StillSmallVoice on July 04, 2006, 04:01:24 AM
Ben Wallace, the stalwart man in the middle for the NBA's Detroit Pistons, is jumping ship.

I don't think terms have been disclosed yet, but Big Ben has left the team that pays him millions for the Chicago Bulls, which plans to pay him, well, more millions.  The Windy City rejoices.  The Motor City mourns.

A double whammy for Detroit . . . Steve Yzerman of the Red Wings, who played all but 2 of his 20 seaons in a Detroit uniform, announced his retirement yesterday.  At least hometown fans have the satisfaction that Yzerman (pr. EYE-zur-man) will enter the Hall of Fame as a Red Wing.  He will always be thought of as a Red Wing.

But free agency has pretty much destroyed the notion of career-long stability and loyalty.

Probably it's just the musing of a sleepless night, but I lay thinking a few minutes ago: What if God were a free agent?  What if He just jumped ship for some theoretical people who paid Him more?  Or paid Him more attention?  If the Lord of the Universe had a free-agent clause written into his contract, would we appreciate Him more?

I'm newly amazed.  When I feel like talking, He is always there.  Or when I don't.  Still there.  No contractual disputes.  No high dollar offers.  No endorsement proposals from Nike.  Nothing can sway the Creator of all things in His love for the hometown crowd.

Alleluia.  Amen!

You're welcome, Brother Amorus . . . it occurs to me that here, in Blue Jacket town, some of our fight-prone players have faces best loved by their mothers (or their Father).

I also mused (again, in the middle of the night) that others before me have pondered the love of God in this same "free agent" vein.  For example, Larry Norman sang 30 years ago (in a song called UFO):

And if there's life on other planets, then I'm sure that He must know
and has been there once already, and has died to save their souls.

I am so grateful that God is not a free agent.  His contract with us is non-negotiable and signed in blood. His.

Getting a little off-topic here, but since the Lord is Alpha and Omega, He transcends the sports page.
