Title: Bibles
Post by: richrkjr on May 29, 2006, 08:03:01 PM
I need advice and suggestion on what is a good contemporary Bible. I dont want anything new age. I want a Bible that is as accurate as the KJV but in todays understanding. Something that doesnt take away from the dieity of our LORD Jesus Christ.

I myself use the Amplified Bible.  Here is a sample of it below, and the KJV below that.

Genesis 1:1 (AMP) IN THE beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 (KJV) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Hello Rich,

I did a lengthy study on this issue about a year ago. I spent a great deal of time and made many comparisons between various top-rated Bible translations.

First, I want to state clearly that I don't believe in Bible bashing. The only Bibles I would bash are those specifically distorted and designed for cults and/or groups who are more interested in being politically correct than having a good and accurate Bible.

That being said, I used several very large studies that used a large number of criteria to grade numerous translations of the Holy Bible. I also did my own study.

My conclusion was that the (NASB) New American Standard Bible is the best for me, and it consistently was ranked in the best category in all of the studies. This should NOT be confused with the (NAB) which is an unrelated version for Catholics.

Those that are rated best in most of the studies include:  NASB, ESV, NET, RV, ISV, NIV, and ASV. Many more manuscripts are available today than there were in the 1600s, and our tools to convert from the ancient languages are also much better. As a result, many of the errors made in the 1600s are now corrected, and many of the more modern versions are more literal and correct than the older versions. Being more literal and correct is what first drew me to taking a hard look at the NASB.

Please, I would again like to state that I hate Bible bashing. Some people have created a lot of divisions, hate, and doubt by making FALSE claims about a particular version and trying to condemn all others. This is not constructive for the BODY OF CHRIST, and it creates nothing but hate and division between Brothers and Sisters in Christ. I like to use several translations of the Holy Bible when I study. The Amplified Bible is one of the translations that I use when I utilize "4 translations in parallel" on one page for comparisons. The other three that I use in parallel are the NASB, ASV, and the KJV. I also go back to the ancient languages for very difficult portions of Scripture.

This thread is NOT an invitation for anyone to attempt to start another war over Bible translations. This is also not an invitation for any kind of "ONLYIST" to jump in and start bashing various translations of the Holy Bible. Posts like that will simply be deleted and the user will be warned.

Love in Christ,
Tom

I like the NIV study bible. Gives lots of notes for morons like me that don't get it ;D

Lots of good stuff in the notes that help with understanding.

ANY bible that you can read easily and understand is a good one.

Didn't Billy Gram say when asked which bible is best "whichever you will read" ;)

Hello Rookieupgrade1,

There really is a big selection of excellent Bibles with reference materials to choose from, both in book form and for the computer. I've been spoiled by the computer, fonts as large as I want them, and all of my reference material one click away. I think it's smart to use the reference materials, and I especially enjoy using the links to contrasts and comparisons. It also spoiled me pretty quickly to hover the mouse over a word or click a word and have immediate access to all kinds of language helps.

By the way, my pastor uses an NIV Study Bible, and he really enjoys it.

If I went back to book form, it would definitely have to be large type, and it would probably be pretty thick with everything I would want with it.   :D

Love In Christ,
Tom

You may want to check out the The 21st Century King James Version of the Holy Bible

I just got one last year and have gotten through most of the old testament now and think they did a very good job with it.  ;)

I like to alternate between the NASB and the NIV.  Sometimes I can get a better understanding of scripture that way.  I also like the Amplified Bible for deeper study.  I'm sure you will find one to meet your needs. ;)

Brothers and Sisters,

I was reflecting on this thread and had to stop and give thanks for the huge assortment of Godly materials we have in this part of the world and the freedom we have to worship.

I like to read Voice of the Martyrs every month to keep it in my mind that Christians in other portions of the world can and are being killed for having scraps of a Holy Bible or a Christian Tract. Just the appearance of Christian conduct can result in beatings, being thrown in prison, or killed.

Here, we talk about various translations of the Holy Bible and study material that would take several lifetimes to enjoy. We are rich and spoiled rotten with the blessings of Almighty God.

I really don't know what users call themselves here in terms of class (i.e. middle-income, etc.). I would have considered myself to be lower middle-income before I retired. If we thought that we were poor as Job's turkey, we would still be RICH in comparison to many Christians around the world. I'm talking about rich in both comparisons: 1) food, clothing, shelter; 2) money or means to obtain and study Godly materials. We have many reasons to thank and praise GOD many times each day. Most of us individually have enough Bible materials to supply a village in many parts of the world. I only have one question left, and it's for me: do I ever take for granted the blessings GOD has given my family and myself? YES!, and I'm ashamed of myself. I must pray for forgiveness and ALWAYS remember that every good thing comes from GOD. Why should GOD keep pouring out HIS blessings on someone who doesn't show the proper appreciation and thanks? I DON'T KNOW...

Love in Christ,
Tom

1 John 1:3 NASB  what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.

Brother Tom,

I am of the poor class, as I only get 691.00 dollars a month. By the way, I feel blessed by Christ, by his many blessings he has given me. I praise God everyday, for the blessings he has given me. AMEN

Although I do get payed (100.00 a week) as Pastor, all my pay goes back into my Church.  I feel God can use the money better then I can.

I really enjoy e-sword myself. It is free, simple to use and has many, many functions for easy study and cross referencing.

As for versions I prefer to use the KJV. It was my first reader so I personally do not have any difficulty in understanding it. Occasionally I will use others such as the NIV, NASB and ASV.

Brothers and Sisters,

Most of you know that I love to use e-Sword. I think it is a masterpiece example of:

FREELY Give because you have been FREELY Given.

People without money now have access to an outstanding and comprehensive Bible Study package that is much better than many commercial products costing $500 to $1,000.

More and more is also becoming available for e-Sword. Users can make their own modules from their choice of thousands of excellent resources that have been out of copyright for many years. I am trying to make one now and will let everyone know how it goes. I will quickly tell anyone who wants to make an e-Sword module that it's a ton of work, but many have and many are giving away their work just like Rick Meyers, the author of e-Sword.

Installing e-Sword on your computer really means that you have access to an entire Bible Study library from one screen, and everything interacts in "real-time" with the portion of Scripture that you are studying. By everything, I'm talking about dictionaries, commentaries, ancient language helps, expositions, topical links, and more. I can't recommend it enough for anyone who wants to study the Bible. It isn't the only completely FREE Bible study packages, but I think it is the best by far. I've made extensive comparisons with "The Online Bible" and "The Sword" that are also excellent and FREE. I personally believe that e-Sword stands head and shoulders above the rest, but others may not agree. The main point I want to make is that you can have an OUTSTANDING Bible Study Package FREE. Many translations of the Holy Bible are available, and nearly all of the languages of the world are served with e-Sword.

Love In Christ,
Tom

The moffatt falls into the category that blackeyedpeas was talking about. It is in the same category as the NWT and is used by the JW's frequently because it denies the diety of Jesus Christ.

God's Word will never fail, because He tells us so........

Hebrews 13:5 Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down ( relax My hold on you)! [ Assuredly not!]

1 Peter 4:19 Therefore, those who are ill-treated and suffer in accordance with God's will must do right and commit their souls [in charge as a deposit] to the One Who created [them] and will never fail [them].

><>  ><>  Simple question, how????

Laterunner, God's Word, the Holy Bible is alive, it isn't a book you read and that's it you're done. The Bible is a manual for everyday living. It has survived all types of persecution, it has been translated into almost every known language and dialect, it is the oldest Book in existance, and the all time best-seller. But more importantly than that it is alive in the hearts and soul and spirit of every Christian. If you put 100 Christians in a room chances are that eachof them know at least 100 verses from the Bible. How can the Bible ever be destroyed. When you think how many Bible there are. In my home alone there are 14 Bibles (Books) on my computer there are 4 Bible study tools each containing at least 12 Bibles, my husband has the Bible on his computer and my daughters have it on their's. And I have the Bible on CDs. That's just one home, laterunner, now can you imagine how many Bibles there are in the world. Even if every single Bible was taken away God's Word will always prevail, there is no way God's Word will fail. No one can ever take the Bible awa from me because it's alive and it's in my mind I have som many Scriptures memorized, that if I sat down and wrote each one I would shock myself.

 Ro 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

A simple question with a not so simple answer. God told us this is so and He will provide the way.

Some of the ways have already been mentioned by others. In countries where Bibles have been banned and are destroyed daily there are those that have taken various pages of it and secretly pass it around from one to the other. Whether it is this fashion or in the hearts of others or some other manner we know that His word will remain.

Amen PR, in countries where the Bible is banned just one page is enough to stir the hearts and minds of others to recall other Scriptures they have in their hearts and mind. God's Word is so powerful it can never be destroyed.

Title: Re: Bibles

Amen Brothers and Sisters!

I was just thinking about the scrolls and manuscripts we are still finding from thousands of years ago. Those from thousands of years ago were done by hand, and all copying was a labor that people of today couldn't imagine. YET, many of those copies done by hand are still available today. It's a plain and simple promise from GOD that no power can destroy GOD'S WORD. Millions have hidden GOD'S WORD in their heart. We really don't have any idea how many copies of ancient writings of GOD'S WORD are yet to be found, but GOD'S Promise alone is enough for me.

Today GOD'S WORD is on just about every media known to man (i.e. paper, recordings, computer disks, etc.). The average Christian could probably supply an entire village in some other part of the world with Godly materials. It's a death sentence to even possess these materials in many parts of the world, but GOD'S WORD is still there, and people are being put to death for even having it. The death sentence doesn't even slow GOD'S WORD down. Many have tried through the ages to destroy GOD'S WORD, and it isn't possible because THE WORD is ALIVE, JESUS CHRIST, our Lord and Saviour forever. They did crucify HIM on a CROSS and killed HIM, but the grave couldn't hold HIM. HE arose from the dead on the third day, and HE lives in the hearts of hosts, both living and dead. WHY? - Because HE LIVES!

Love In Christ,
Tom

Philippians 2:1-2 NASB  Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

I have come to learn lots about our Lord and one thing I have found is certain.  He can never be given "human" characteristics for He is beyond our comprehension.  We can never "limit" the power of God just because our feeble minds can not comprehend it.   If the Lord says so, it will be done.  When I find myself questioning anything I remember some key verses.

Exodus 4: 10-12 "Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD?  Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."

John 14:2-3 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself;

Mt 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Mr 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Lu 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

May we all give glory to our Lord for always being true to His word!

I have to agree with BEP on the versions bit.

Except I have found for me the NASB has been the better one for me to read when I want to just read.  I teach from the KJV because at our church we want everyone to be teaching from the same version and provide a consistancy.  But when I go to sit down and study I will have my KJV, NASB, and usually either a Green's Literal or Young's Literal available.  As well as a couple of Lexicon's opened up :)  And of course my handy dandy Strongs.

My dining room table gets a mess when I start to dig deep into a verse or topic that Jesus is wanting me to understand

I believe that when two or more are together that there He dwells.  have not remembered many total verses as some have but I'm assured that amongst us the Word dwell & we would have the whole Word between us if all the many types of bible were taken from us & destroyed.
As you say satan has tried to do this through the ages, but each time he brings his hand down hard on Gods body, it's just like slapping a water spillage. he has helped the church to spread wider & wider throughout the world, droplet going every whichway.

Hello Brother Jerry,

I remember the desk full of materials when I used to study also, but my eyes got too bad. It was then that I started experimenting with numerous Bible study packages for the computer. I have several commercial packages, but I settled on the FREEWARE e-Sword Bible Study Package. It's wonderful and I can set the size of the fonts to anything I want. I also have integrated access to all of my Bible study helps, including a huge and free assortment from e-Sword. This includes, dictionaries, commentaries, Strongs, and many other things. I can use up to four Bible translations at once in parallel study. It also has a built-in editor that is excellent for study notes, lesson preparation, and whatever else you might want. The cut and paste functions from the entire integrated package are excellent. The amazing thing is that everything is FREE, really more of everything than any other integrated Bible study package I've ever seen. Other entities do make several add-on items that do cost small amounts of money, but the average person would not need them. I have all of the add-ons available from any source as far as I know, and my total investment is nothing in comparison to the cost of a very basic commercial Bible study package. As an example, I wanted more than the FREE Strongs and other ancient language helps that come with e-Sword. So, I bought Dr. Zodiates module from another source, and it is designed to integrate with e-Sword. I also paid the royalty fees for several Bible translations that are never FREE in any Bible study package. I might add they are available from several different sources, and they are specifically designed to work with e-Sword. The NASB is one of the translations that requires a royalty fee, but the number of completely FREE translations is more than enough for the average person. I do like the NASB, but there are several FREE translations for e-Sword that I like almost as much. It is a first class and FREE package that comes with just about everything you can dream of, including ancient language helps. Try it once and I doubt that you will ever want that table full of books again. If you don't like it, you won't have a penny invested.

Love In Christ,
Tom

2 Corinthians 5:5-8 NASB  Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge. Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord -- for we walk by faith, not by sight -- we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

Good day BEP

I do use the E-Sword as well...I like the Klingon Translation  ;D

I will use that for the commentaries more than anything since I do not possess the commentaries in hard back.  They are on the shopping list someday.  I collect old books so I want them printed and well worn :)

I started with NASB as it was given to me on the day of my baptism.  And with it comes many spiral binders of my own notes.  Someday when I feel they are complete enough to add as a module I may put my notes in there as well.  I love the e-sword and that is something I also usually put on the computers where ever I happen to work at so I have a quick reference Bible there.  I usually keep mine on my desk at work as well.  It pretty much goes everywhere with me, cause you never know when you may need it.

Thank you for the recommendation though.  Always good to know there are others out there looking to provide answers.

God Bless BEP and may your day be glorious.

Sincerely

ROFL, I'm so happy satan really hates my computer, my desk, and my bedside table.
I have 4 different electronic Bible software on my computer, the entire Bible on CD's and so much research material, study material, and other infromation. My desk is cluttered with devotionals, Bibles, and other literature, and my own study notes.
This is what I have to say to satan, "Get out, there is no room in our home for you"

Amen Brothers and Sisters,

We all need to give thanks that we have so MANY Godly materials. There is no excuse for a Christian to be spiritually starving in this part of the word. I many times feel guilty that God has so abundantly provided for us when Christians and the lost have so little or nothing in other parts of the world. I know that many sweet Christians have purchased great quantities of materials that never gets to the intended recipients. It's especially sad when you consider that many of the same people are also physically hungry, and the food we send doesn't get to them. It's really the devil wanting to see those poor people dead physically and spiritually. All we can do is keep praying and keep trying.

Brother Jerry, I must admit that I've never heard of the Klingon translation of the Holy Bible.   ;D  I really don't have a clue what that might be unless it is somehow related to Star Trek. OR, In Oklahoma terms, "Are you pullin' my leg?"   ;D

Love In Christ,
Tom

Ephesians 2:19-22 NASB  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.

I have heard, that there is a verson of the Bible out in Klingon, and Romulan.  Though I always though of it as a myth.

The Klingon Bible I have seen is incomplete. Just a few books available. I hadn't heard about the Romulan

Brothers and Sisters,

I'm shocked and thought that Brother Jerry was kidding with me. I guess that the last time I watched Star Trek was when my son was young. I can't remember how the various aliens talked. Regardless, I would have very serious questions about this. I did an extensive search for the Klingon Bible Translation and was amazed to find that it is actually in existence and is being distributed by "The Sword", not e-Sword. The two entities are completely different. I have very mixed emotions about this and first felt it represented a mockery of the Holy Bible. It was then pointed out to me that it might have some legitimate purpose with the "Trekkies", those who went nuts over Star Trek. I'll have to pray about this and really don't know what to think. If it's helping the "Trekkies" in some way to reach them for Christ, I'm still not sure what to think. So, I'll simply say that I'm an old and square guy, CONFUSED right now. As an individual, I would have a hard time with anything irreverent to the Holy Bible.

Love In Christ,
Tom

BEP

You are correct, and it was my error in the confusion of e-sword with The Sword project.  I did get those confused.  And correct they are two different projects.

I felt the same about the Klingon translation.  I have found that there are also various "translations" of it as well...ie KJV, NASB, etc.  All they have done is substitute words.  And still most of it is in English actually...so it has a funny read.  Like where we would read "In the beginning" they would have something like "In the dhn eyy3nn" or whatever word is beginning.  Although my opinion is that if there is a trekkie out there that needs to have a klingon translation...they may have more wrong with them than their salvation ;)

But then there is nothing that Jesus can't fix...so maybe a good start.

God bless and have a wonderful day

Sincerely
Brother Jerry

Hello Brother Jerry,

Thanks for the additional information. This and many other things are evidence of me suffering with the old and square syndrome.   ;D  I just don't know very much or understand very much about some of the fads and strange things in our culture.

But, I do remember what it was like to be young and looking at the expressions on the faces of older people when they were basically exhibiting   ???   .     ;D

Brother, you are not the only one who is confised. I too am confused totally. I can't understand why someone would need to have the Bible translated in a non-existant llanguage.

One person, the lead person doing this translation, said it was to work on a program that translates the Bible into various languages. He didn't want to translate the Bible into real languages using this software until he had all the bugs out of the translation software. So he played around with it using different science fiction languages. He said in the process that he hoped that maybe he could get some Trekkies interested in picking up the Bible also and that it seemed to have done just that. He has had many Trekkies that have never touched a Bible picking one up and giving him suggestions on correcting the software.

Well Prais God at least some trekkies are picking up a Bible. I pray that is is a genuine Holy Bible and not some cultish bible.

I'm not sure what you are asking here. Are you asking how is it possible that God will never fail us?
Thanks for your clarification.

Could this be the way that God might Glorify his word in ytimes of stress & pursecution in the future.I wonder ------->
will we be able to rely on the Christ in us, the word in us, the word we have heard &

which over the time has been confirmed in our being.  When there are no bibles & we are back to ''word

of mouth''.

Or are you saying ''Let go & let God''   if so why were we ''called''

Hello LateRunner,

I trust GOD completely that HIS WORD will be preserved in many forms: our hearts, on paper, on computers, in recordings, and every media known to man. The devil can't destroy GOD'S WORD, and the devil certainly can't stop the spreading of the GOOD NEWS of GOD'S Love, HIS Grace, and HIS GIFT of JESUS CHRIST as a LIVING LORD and SAVIOUR Forever! Everything the devil tries to do in destroying or stopping GOD'S WORD will fail completely. In fact, every effort of the devil will simply make the MESSAGE of the GOSPEL OF GOD'S GRACE stronger and spread faster. The devil is loose and seeking hosts to devour, but the devil's time is nearing an end and he is defeated. JESUS CHRIST Himself will defeat the devil completely at GOD'S appointed time, and the devil will be thrown into the fires of hell forever, along with his minions of evil.

The SECOND COMING of JESUS CHRIST to the earth will be in GREAT POWER AND WRATH. Heavenly hosts of armies will follow HIM into battle against the forces of evil. The time of GOD'S Mercy and Patience will be over, and GOD will pour out HIS TERRIBLE WRATH on evil. Host will face the TERRIBLE SWIFT SWORD of the LORD OF LORDS, the KING OF KINGS, our precious LORD and SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST, VERY GOD!

Love In Christ,
Tom

AMEN BEPs, God will never fail us. He is true to His Word, and if we ever doubt His Word, then we should go to our prayer closet and have a one on one conversation with Him, we should go back to His Word and build ourselves up in His Word. God has no reason to lie to us, any doubts anyone has about God come from the devil himself.
