Title: Coffee on New Year's Day . . . Post by: Durango on January 02, 2006, 03:55:02 PM Family and friends were gathered around the table on New Years Day.
Conversations of various topics could be heard all around the table. Then Aunt Josephine started to talk about New Year's Resolutions . . . Something I've never much understood because it seems most people never follow through on those resolutions . . . seems most people fail in those efforts and end up depressed over the fact. Anyway, Aunt Josephine said that her New Year's Resolution would be to go on a diet and lose 50 pounds. I silently wondered if she was referring to losing the same 50 pounds she swore she was going to lose last year as I watched her stuff a cannoli in her mouth. Uncle Louie said his New Year's Resolution would be to finally quit smoking . . . the same resolution he's been making for the past 20 years or so . . . the only change in Uncle Louie over those 20 years is that his smoker's cough has gotten worse. Uncle Jimmy said that perhaps he'd give up drinking . . . which is even less likely than Aunt Josephine losing 50 pounds or Uncle Louie quitting smoking. Don't get me wrong, New Year's Resolutions do work for some people and I don't think there is anything wrong with people trying to rid bad habits from their lives . . . It just seems to me that most people never follow through with those New Year's Resolutions. Perhaps if they sought the Lord's help and guidance they wouldn't fail in their efforts. As for me, instead of making a list of New Year Resolutions I will do as it is written in Matthew 6:33. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;" I figure that if I truly seek the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and I pray over it, then the Good Lord will guide me in changing those behaviors that need to be changed. Just my thoughts over coffee. Durango Title: Re:Coffee on New Year's Day . . . Post by: nChrist on January 02, 2006, 11:17:34 PM Hello Durango,
It's been awhile but I remember you quite well, probably because you many times state things as a conversation over a cup of coffee. I enjoy having conversations over a cup of coffee, so I'm happy to see you back on the forum. But most of all, we both belong to JESUS. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! IN JESUS CHRIST!! Praying for the help and guidance of the LORD is the answer to a host of human problems. So, I love your thoughts about the New Year: Quote As for me, instead of making a list of New Year Resolutions I will do as it is written in Matthew 6:33. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;" I figure that if I truly seek the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and I pray over it, then the Good Lord will guide me in changing those behaviors that need to be changed. Love In Christ, Tom Psalms 119:105 NASB Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. Title: Re:Coffee on New Year's Day . . . Quote Perhaps if they sought the Lord's help and guidance they wouldn't fail in their efforts. The only thing I can say, is AMEN!Resting in the hands, of the Lord. Bob Acts 20:32 And now [brethren], I commit you to God [I deposit you in His charge, entrusting you to His protection and care]. And I commend you to the Word of His grace [to the commands and counsels and promises of His unmerited favor]. It is able to build you up and to give you [your rightful] inheritance among all God's set-apart ones (those consecrated, purified, and transformed of soul). Title: Re:Coffee on New Year's Day . . . And I add another AMEN! I do a lot of my thinking and talking over a cup of coffee also. ;) ;) :D :D Title: Re:Coffee on New Year's Day . . . You never know. Last Jan 1, I made the same resolution for the 4th year in a row to lose weight. No one expected me to go though with it and I did not until June. Then I started a diet and began to seek God to help me. Dec 1, I weighed 39 pounds less and was walking 2 miles a day. With me walking with a cane that is alot of walking and it took an hour to do it. But I feel so much better physicaly and emotionaly. So, don't give up on your relatives. We just came back from a month in Houston with our daughter where I gained 5 miles so I started back on my diet and am walking again. Today I was only able to do .65 miles because it was raining and it affected my arthritic legs but I am determined to build back up to 2 miles. betty betty Title: Re:Coffee on New Year's Day . . . Post by: Willowbirch on January 07, 2006, 11:11:27 AM I do my best to not think of that while I am drinking coffee. The last time I did I looked down and saw him floating in my cup. About resolutions (a passage that startled me into looking at myself): "I was doing the wrong of never wanting or trying to be better. And now I see that I have been letting things go as they would for a long time. Whatever came into my head I did, and whatever didn't come into my head I didn't do. I never sent anything away, and never looked out for anything to come. I haven't been attending to my mother - or my father either. And now I think of it, I know I have often seen them looking troubled, and I have never asked them what was the matter. And now I see, too, that I did not ask because I suspected it had something to do with me and my behaviour, and I didn't want to hear the truth. And I know that I have been grumbling at my work, and doing a hundred other things that are wrong." -Curdie (from "The Princess and Curdie", by George MacDonald) Title: Re: Coffee on New Year's Day . . .
