Carry Your Bible

Psalms 1–3, Acts 17:1–15
Key Verse: Acts 17:11

In the church I attended as a young person we had a name for the sound of Bible pages turning. So many people had the same Bible that the collective rustling sound was called “the Scofield shuffle.” Instead of the text, the pastor could have announced the page number!

Appearances can be deceiving. Not everyone who has a Bible reads it or obeys it. Still, people using their Bibles in church can indicate the spiritual quality of a congregation. If the people do not see the need for bringing their Bibles or have no desire to do so, it undoubtedly is a weak church.

Many churches have a class called “Berean.” Some even choose that name for their church. It is an often-used name because of the spiritual quality of the believers in Berea. “They received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (v. 11). Today we might say, “They carried and used their Bibles!” But there was more to it than that. They looked carefully at the Word, following the messages of Paul and verifying what he preached. And they did this daily.

To be spiritually strong, we must read, learn and live the Word. To be a strong church, the same is necessary. Use your Bible!

Ask God to help you keep up the practice of reading His Word daily. Pray also that as you read you will learn, and that you will put into practice what you learn.

I always tell my kids, praying is us speaking to God, reading the Bible is Him speaking back to us. In any relationship communication needs to come from both sides.

You are quite correct. God's Word always has something to tell us. It is the ultimate instruction book for living a life that is pleasing to Him.

What you told your children is awesome.  How wonderful it is to tell them while they are young, that it isn't just a one way street.  Our God listens and answers.  Kudos to you, FHG.  God will bless you and your children.

Grace and peace,

Interesting note on this topic - I've found that many folks in our church tend to carry King James bibles and most have no idea what they are reading. But, these same folks consider it heresy to recommend they try a different translation... :)

I find it so critical that we read scripture to know what God is saying to us - but we should also point out that we need to listen in a language we can understand. I, too, carried a KJ for a long time, it was tradition in our church while I was growing up. I still love to read it, compare it to other translations, etc. but I'd have a hard time if I was totally dependent on it.

God Bless,

-Samson

Hello Samson,

It's great to see you back on the forum. We missed you.

I've been thinking and praying about Bibles and other materials we have for studying God's Word. Specifically, I give thanks that we have freedom to worship, and we have access to all the Christian material we want and can afford to pay for. I must add that great amounts of material are also available here for those who can't afford to buy anything. These thoughts came about after reading about many people around the world who are killed for attempting to worship or possess materials about God. We are rich and spoiled in terms of being able to study the deep things of GOD.

Other recent events caused me to investigate various translations of the Holy Bible, and I found out pretty quickly there are numerous excellent translations of the Holy Bible. I used the KJV for most of my life, but I've recently started using other translations of the Holy Bible and I'm happy I did. Some of the claims of heresy and other like nonsense about Bibles other than the KJV is what convinced me to change. We had the Holy Bible before King James, and we have it now with or without King James. There are Christians all over the world who would love to just have a Bible, and we are so spoiled that some try to create divisions between Christians over various translations. I just wish that we had a way to put Bibles in the hands of those willing to put their lives at risk for having one.

In short, God's banquet table for study material here is loaded, and it's bare in many other parts of the world while we argue about what God has given us. In the meantime, I will pray that ways and means are opened for others around the world to obtain Christian material and be able to study it without risking their lives. I also pray that Christians in this part of the world give thanks to God for the abundance He has provided us.

Love In Christ,
Tom
