Title: The Agnostic Leaves!!
Post by: Soldier4Christ on June 16, 2005, 10:41:39 PM
I have had the privilege and honor to have been in several conversations recently with a gentleman that saw WWII first hand. He was a 1st Sgt 3rd Army. With his permission already given, I would like to share some excerpts from a few things that he has written.

Quote
We had a man in our Co. that always said there was no such thing as a God and religion was foolish etc.

After a few days in France,in the hegderow area a flight of P-38s hedgehopping under the Kraut radar popped over "our" hedgerow and were gone just like that. We neither heard or saw them coming and they were gone. Just the roar.

Our resident agnostic yelled over to me "Sarge -Holy Mother of God what was that?".

When I was able to stop laughing I yelled back to him "You tell me how God can have a Holy Mother when he doesn't exist and I'll tell you".

That day there was a foxhole conversion and our resident agnostic disappeared for ever.

Quote
That was my introduction to the Tiger real up close and personal. I had seen some in Normandy area but never that close and I was glad the FFI were in control of the tank and I never imagined that I would ever get that close and yet be able to walk away.

It was not unheard of that the Krauts used a Tiger with an 88 on it as an anti-personnel weapon. When that barrel swung around to face us it looked as big as the Grand Canyon and in a situation like that you get religion real fast.

This was another case where our resident agnostic kept repeating the phrase Oh MY God! Oh My God!

The time of trouble in a persons life will either open their eyes to the truth or it will harden their hearts even more. It is a time that we need to realize what we have always known from the beginning of time .... there is a God and He wants to help us if we only accept Him.

Mat 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Pastor Roger -
A few years back I got a strong hankering for real U.S. history.  I believe it was a result of the popular onslaught of revisionist history.  (“Revisionist history” is certainly nothing new.  It is a form of propaganda that has been used since man was cursed with political parties.)

My readings took me through many volumes of wonderful historical literature, and I’ve read so many quotes that are similar to what your WWII gentleman has to say.

A few of the books I’ve been through – all good reading – (although you may have read most of them) by timeline are:

Rise to Rebellion
The Glorious Cause
Written by Jeff Shaara
(Sequel historical novels about the American Revolution – great read!)

Gods and Generals
The Killer Angels
The Last Full Measure
Written by Michael and Jeff Shaara (father and son)
(Historical trilogy about the Civil War – should be ‘must read’.)

WWII books:
Faith Under Fire by Steve Rabey (Various stories – worth reading)
Flyboys by James Bradley (The story of King Dubya the 1st is a small part of this one – good stuff).
In Harms Way by Doug Stanton (About the USS Indianapolis – tragic, compelling – one of my favorites.)
Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides (About the liberation of POWs in the Philippines – extremely sad – the POWs we have in Cuba, along with Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill, should be forced to read this one until they puke.)
A Band of Brothers (The HBO series actually was fairly close to this wonderful historical account.  This should be required reading for anyone who votes in an American election!)

Good reading!
God bless,
JudgeNot

You know, PR, - I left out perusals concerning Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Yugoslavia and Iraq – I guess those are in the back-room-bookcase – I know they are around here somewhere...  I’ll go on a search and let you know those titles/authors.

As you imply and my readings confirm– there are no atheists in foxholes.
 :)

JudgeNot,

Yes, his story is one that has been told in variations time and again. That is because it happened more than once to many people.

I have read some of the books that you have mentioned.

Faith Under Fire
In Harms Way

I saw a documentary on Ghost Soldiers. History Channel I think. I had to turn it off before it was done.

I started reading A Band of Brothers but couldn't finish it. I found it to difficult for me to handle. It brought back to many memories.

I agree that there are many of these books that should be required reading for many people especially politicians. Unfortunately many will consider them as fictional stories and not truths.

Why brother, WHY are so many folks intent on repeating history rather than learning from it?

Pride in self wisdom??

I think that Ecc 1 answers this one for us especially verse 8:

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
