I recently thought of an interesting analogy when I was trying to explain the Crusades to a friend. I would like to present it here and see what you guys think.

The Crusades and WWII NOTE this will take a good deal of knowledge about both the Crusades and WWII to understand

The Crusades took place because the Asia Minor (France during WWII) was taken over by the Muslims (Nazis during WWII). Constantinople (England during WWII), realizing how close this was to their city, and not wanting to be conquered called the leader of the West, Pope Urban II (FRD). Urban responded by mobilizing Europe (United States) with his famous sermon "Deus le Volt" which means "GOD WILLS IT!" (like the effect of Pearl Harbor). Europe was then sent on a Great Crusade (Normandy Invasion) to liberate Asia Minor (France) and save Constantinople (England) as well as protect the territorial integrity of Europe (US). Remember that had the Infidel not been weekend, a much unorganized Dark Age Europe would have been next (America during the depression). The Crusades invigorated Europe and started the Renaissance (post war baby boom, 50's market boom). Here is where things get a little different. Islam won their counter strike (Battle of the Bulge). And the West was beaten back. HOWEVER, the US did not occupy Europe after WWII, and didn't the Soviet Union, and evil Empire, occupy what we had won for a while? I think the similarities are strikingly similar. AFTER ALL!!!! Modern Europe forgot how the United States saved their little rears during WWII. JUST as many Christians have forgotten how the Crusades saved their little Christian rears!

Now allow me to end by putting Paton’s speech to the Third Army in Urban’s time.
"There is one thing ye men will thank me for. When your grandson sits on your knee and ask you what you did during the Great Crusade, you won’t have to say 'well I shoveled xxxx on feudal surf in France' no, you can say 'sonny, your grand pappy rode with the Great 1st Crusade for that xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx named Urban II! That is all. Oh, and GOD WILLS IT!"

It was a cute analogy. Not the best, but cute. You kind of had to force out the parts about WW2. WW2 did not start with the invasion of France, the war had been raging by the time Nazi Germany took over France, and Britain was already in it. FDR did not just unto the war right away like the Pope. He sent a few plane, and a few pilots, but that’s about it. And most of his efforts were in the Pacific at first. You also left out a LOT of other aspects of WW2, you didn’t mention any of the countries invaded by Germany before France, and who is Italy symbolic of? You also left a major part of the war out, the War in the East. Australia, Japan, China, and half of the US Forces, it was a major part of the war! Some of our best commanders were fighting in that neck of the woods, and they revolutionized modern warfare.

Like I said, it is a cute analogy, but in no way a prefect one. Ever read the analogy between WW1 and Lord of the Rings? Now THAT is an interesting Analogy, and he didn’t even MEAN it!
