Title: Firewall & Anti-Virus Software Advice Please
Post by: nChrist on May 22, 2005, 07:04:25 PM
Some of my software is about to expire, and I don't think that I have the money to renew it. I've been told there are many excellent choices that are FREE.

I've been doing some reading and would like to ask for recommendations from anyone else using FREEWARE firewall and anti-virus software.

Here's what I'm thinking about:

Sygate Personal Firewall

Avast Personal Anti-Virus

Any critiques or other recommendations would be sincerely appreciated.

Brothers and Sisters,

I already did it. I can't believe that they set the renewal notices to drive you nuts 1 month before expiration. I was getting renewal pop up notices about every 5 minutes and decided I couldn't put up with that for a month. I installed the freeware I talked about. So far - so good. I'll let everyone know.

Sorry I didn't see this thread before.  I use; Sygate Personal Firewall and AVG.

I have noticed before, when I used Zone-Alarm my computer would lock up. Since I've been using Sygate Personal Firewall, it has never locked up.

Dreamweaver,

Thanks brother. Two great minds couldn't be all wrong.  :D

I'm still working on the setup for the firewall. So far, things appear to be much faster than Norton Internet Security. There are a few yes and no settings on the firewall to things that I don't know what they are, but I have a 50% chance of being right.  :D  Example: I said "YES" to Microsoft Generic Host. I think that's necessary for DNS lookups, but I guessed.

I also have to figure out whether to allow remote initiated message queing service. I said "NO", and there doesn't appear to be any problem. Could you give me an idea if I messed up these settings? Thanks in advance.

I know one thing - I just found out what a system hog Norton was in comparison. Everything is much faster, and I saved $70. If they work as good as the reviews say, I will save $70 a year from now on.
