Title: I'm new here!
Post by: Backwoods Boy on May 12, 2005, 09:21:11 AM
Hello everybody I'm new here. Looks like a great site.

I need some help. I've been a Christian for a long time, but got away from Church until the last couple of years. Now I'm back and getting into a lot of activities. My problem is praying in public I get so nervous I just lose my train of thought. I don't really know why. I pray in quiet all the time. Has anybody got any ideas to help me get through this? I ask for help before each prayer?

Welcome to CU my friend.

This is a common problem, even for people who are strong Christians for many years.

The only way to overcome it is to actually do it. Find a smaller group for starters, a Bible study for example. Tell the leader, or pastor that you have this problem, and he will encourage you (not push) to pray out loud. Once you get the first one or two under your belt, it's becomes really easy after that, and you may find yourself actually looking forward to doing it.

Some people are just too shy, and that's OK, as long as you pray, even if it's in silence, but praying out loud is very fulfilling.

Hi Backwoods Boy, from someone else who feels this way a lot of the time :D

BRNZ offers some good tips.  Another thing that helps me is to pray aloud when I am alone.   As your relationship with God grows, I think it becomes easier too.   Rather than thinking about what people are hearing you say, you become more focused on the one you are speaking with.

Welcome to CU!

Grace and Peace!

Thanks for the advise. I've already told my Pastor he can call on me to pray during services. I guess I'll have to get over it, and I keep praying that the Lord will help me.

Well you are so right......lol.  I'm still scared too...I've seen so many people do it and say some crazy things then get tongue tied...just about everything happens.  I talk to God constantly but when it come to sayi ng it out loud...after listening to some of the real good prayers....you feel very nervous....very.  But God does know your heart.....pray that he sends the holy spirit to help you next time.

You remind me of me many years ago! When I first got saved
I was a very shy, introverted, and quiet person. I would set
on the last row, and leave before anyone got a chance to
speak to me!The Lord finally showed me a way to start to
step out -  I had a blue jean jacket that I wore all the time.
On this jacket the lord had me have sewn a large butterfly-
on 1 inch gold letters around the butterfly was embroidered
born again  John 3:16. For some reason after I started to
wear that jacket, people would come up to me and start to
ask me questions--it's a little hard to deny when your coat
speaks so loudly!

It is now 28 years later, I am a youth pastor, singer, muscian,
songwriter, and evangelist! Those whom God calls, He will
also qualify!Did this happen over-night? of course not! Did I
revert to my shy nature at times? DUH! But by the grace of
God we are overcomers in all things! Persevere my friend and
brother, and I assure you that in the Lord's time all things will
work together for the good of you who loves the Lord!
May Jesus richly bless you, and give you the strength to do
all you desire for him.

respectfully yours in Yeshua:
